Why isn't there mass changing?

Recommended Posts

That being said, I understand that they won’t be the same (Don Murphy has already made that very clear), and I’m OK with that. Hasbro can’t make a toy gun, and tape decks are just out dated now a days. I’m all for a tank or a large cannon, like MW Megs, I think either of those options would capture the essence of “Living Weapon that was Megatron (not to mention his WWI altmode was a tank, and that’s considered G1). But, I’m not sure how they could translate Soundwave into something other than a tape deck and keep the same “big silent bot with an army of mini bots at his command feeling…

… Maybe He could be a heavily armored com. truck and his minions could be rectangular plaits of armor that com off of him and transform, that could be cool, then the mini bots could be a part of Soundwave, like bits of his evil self breaking off and spying, infiltrating and causing all kinds of havoc … hmm… Yeeesssssssss!! :tfevil :thumb

Did ya'll miss this part? :wtf I agree (and rather like) the tank idea!! :thumb

We dont have to worry About mass shifting for the movie anyway. I'd be shocked if all the Transformers in the movie Aren't Alternators.

me too

Nah I just happen to agree with BC on the notion that not everything TF needs to be oriented around its roots. Defiently not BC though..

Aside from the re-issues and the comics, G1 is dead.. if it wasn't dead, it would be on TV still like it always was.. take a walk into a TRU, and you'll see so many re-issues warming the shelves collecting dust.. facts don't lie. Energon and even Universe sell better than G1.. kids aren't interested in our ancient toys. There is no way anyone is going to take the risk and do everything exactly the way G1 was done.. it's not the same gig anymore.

For example, a tank for Megatron would be acceptable (for me at least) since it's very much like a gun.

Since megatron has been a tank before :P

Megatron has been a handgun exactly once in TF history. He's been a tank six times (not counting WW), a jet four times, and a car three times. (If you include all the Galvatrons & repaints...) This just shows how fixated people are on G1.

Look guys, it just doesn't make sense. Period. Tortle hit it right on the head -- people will accept some things but not others. Film is a visual medium, and whereas stuff like radiation and spider powers is all stuff you don't really "see" happening, a mass-changing robot is right there for you to watch every time it happens. And every time it happens your brain would be telling you "this isn't real."

If there's even 30 seconds describing how a giant robot can shrink and rearrange his molecules to create a small gun/tapedeck/cassette/manhole cover, then I bet most of the audience's eyes will glaze over and lose interest. They don't care that giant robots laugh in the face of physics--they just care that there's giant robots on the screen beating the crap out of each other.

Exactly right. Nobody cares about the physics of how their size changes. There's no reason to spend any time trying to explain it. Just do it.

THIS is why Murphy wants to leave it out. And THIS is the primary (and, usually, ONLY) reason anyone argues against size-changing with.

Nobody ever said they had to stop and "explain" it. All they have to do is do it. In Star Trek, nobody stops and questions how the phasers or transporters work. They just follow along and accept it as -advanced technology-.

That's only 150 - 200 years of advancement. The Transformers landed on Earth 4 million+ years ago, which means their technology is -at least- that far ahead of anything on Earth.

Who are any of us (including the almight Don Murphy), to definitively (and arbitrarily) state that "it couldn't happen in reality"? Particularly when we're discussing giant, intelligent, LIVING robots from a cybernetic planet? Where, exactly, is that based in "reality"?

As to the "stupidity" of a powerful being like Megatron transforming into a "weak" form like a human handgun.. that is nothing but the flawed human perception that "small" = "weak". The fact that it's a small package does not mean it can't contain a very powerful bomb.

By the same token, just because Megatron (or any other TF) might be disguised as a human handgun, that doesn't mean anything, 'cause he -isn't really a freakin' human handgun-. The appearance of his alt mode is just that: an appearance. Inside that facade, he's still Cybertronian technology, advanced in excess of 4 million years.

Prime was never confronted with a "tiny, weak gun". Every time Megs' was aimed at him (usually by Starscream), he was in proportion to both bots. (Not to mention, the times when Prime actually wielded Megtron himself)

Regarding Soundwave's tape deck alt... yes, they do still make portable cassette players like that. Granted, more people have CD players now, but alot of people still use cassettes, just as alot of people still use VCRs instead of DVD players.

As for how he'd end up as that, well.. humans could have put in a dump near the mountain housing the Ark, now couldn't they? (and just because something is in the dump, that doesn't mean it's necessarily broken/in bad shape)

Regardless of all this, Teletran-1 didn't pick their new alt modes according to how "powerful" any of the forms may or may not have been. T-1 had no concept of that (it had never encountered any of those (what it took to be) "lifeforms" before. It used what was within range of its scanner-probe.

(that, and the creators were building the cartoon around pre-existing toys. :P)

If you had only posted that, I'd agree with you 100%. The rest could have been summed up as "I just want Megatron to be a gun."

BTW since when did EVERYTHING about G1 become holy frickin' Scripture? Are we not allowed to say "hey, that's dumb" anymore because G1 is now this "mythos" or whatever? Is it "cool" that Red alert is a Lamborghini and a fire chief's car? Or that the gestalt teams would have to do like three different mass changes between all their modes? Or that these "disguised" robots are mostly race cars and brightly colored military aircraft? (And let's not even bring up Astrotrain or Omega Supreme or the Dinobots or the Insecticons or Cosmos.) PLEASE for the love of all that's good and right in the world, would you just accept the fact that G1 wasn't designed to be the wonderful, internally consistent universe that you all want it to be? It's okay, really; it doesn't have to be perfect for you to like it.

Also BTW if you simply showed incredible shrinking robots on screen without explaining it, people would laugh. Because it's goofy. Understand? Goo-fy.

Also also BTW why is this even a thread? It's a done deal. No shrinking robots in TF movie. Sorry. Go home and watch your G1 DVDs if you want to see shrinking robots.

This issue has been played to death on just about every TF discussion board there is. We're finally getting a live action Transformers movie, that should be enough. If it were to be made as exact as possible to g1 then whats the point? Most of us already know that story and everything about it and it's time to move on. The nice thing about this movie is that it will be different, we won't know everything thats going to happen and there should be plenty of good surprises for all of us.

No one group of fans deserve to have things put into the movie just for them. They aren't making this movie to cater to any one generation exclusively, they're making it for all Transformers fans AND the general movie fans. If they made a movie just to please the fans then chances are the fans would be the only ones seeing it. This movie has to go beyond the Transformers fans and really make an impact with the mainstream audience or it will be a huge flop.

Personally, I just want to see a movie that's really cool. When I leave the theatre after seeing it I want to think, "man, thats exactly what it would be like if giant transforming robots did come to earth!". Absurd things like size changing and a TF's that turns into a gun or tape player would just ruin that. Sure it's fine for a comic and cartoon but not for a realistic style movie.

I've been a fan from the very beginning so I can sympathize with those who do want size changing and all that, but I feel they are failing to see the bigger picture here. I think about why I loved the Transformers in the first place and it's because it's different, creative, and more importantly it fired my imagination and inspired me to be creative. Now when that same creativity threatens the status quo of the TF universe people freak out.

Maybe if people just take a step back and really think about what made them like the Transformers as much as they do they'll realize that it's far more than just a few silly trivial details.
