Why isn't there mass changing?

OK, now that I have your attention...Mass-changing ain't gonna happen for one reason alone: the average American audience doesn't give a crap about that, nor do they want to learn about it. If there's even 30 seconds describing how a giant robot can shrink and rearrange his molecules to create a small gun/tapedeck/cassette/manhole cover, then I bet most of the audience's eyes will glaze over and lose interest. They don't care that giant robots laugh in the face of physics--they just care that there's giant robots on the screen beating the crap out of each other.

It's time to face facts--this movie isn't going to be made for the hardcore G1 fanatic, nor is it going to be made strictly for any Transformer fan. It's going to be made for the guy who has $10 to blow on a Saturday night, for the kid who's never seen/liked TF before but thinks the giant red truck robot looks awesome, for the ones who are only familiar with Armada and/or Energon and for both TF fanboys mentioned above. X-men wasn't "true to the source material," Spider-Man didn't follow the comic book to a T, and yet those movies are discussed in loving terms by hardcore fans and newbies alike. No matter how much Mr. Murphy says he's going to have to cut a lot of the things from G1 that just don't make sense in this day and age. Only one person I know of bitched about the organic web shooters and the genetically-altered spider.

Seriously, if any one is a fan, just support the movie so that we can get a sequel. Don't whine and Starscream about it and cause a rift--that's just childish.

Oh, and Bodycount? I was thinking Jane Fonda, rather than Kerry for yon anime slapper.

I wish this entire thread could mass change into nonexistence. The shrinking robots thing was stupid in 1984 before they had a name for it, and it's stupid now. Nobody in the real world gives a flying f*ck about these dumb-ass "organic web shooters" debates. Sweet Jeebus Christmas on a flying carpet.

Duh!!!!!!!

we all know that and and we all know that it's not going to cater the the G1 Purists

I JUST SIMPLY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE COOL

Quit posting pretty much the same thing as everyone else. The point is already been made

So...why did you even start this discussion anyway?

OK guys, my opinion.

Size/ mass change could work, if you explain it as a mater of fact, like when Gean Grey (SP) explains Wolverine’s immune system, she doesn’t tell us HOW it works, she simply states that it is what it is and we take it for granted because the movie is about mutant humans with special powers.

Our movie is about giant sentient robots from another planet, which are ALIVE and have soles (sparks). That alone is not real, these aren’t just machines with great AI, they are supposed to be living tings with highly advance technology.

Many of these living robots have special powers. One of witch is size/ mass conversion. If, say Optimus was giving a detail of the enemies capabilities to a human, the mater could be summed up in a single sentence, “ Some Transformers can dramatically change size by shifting there mass into subspace, and others like Sky Warp can even move through subspace for short distances effectively transporting himself instantaneously anywhere in his range of vision. If you think something like that is too complicated then think back to some of the explanations given in X-men, Hulk, and Spiderman (Genetic mutation? Gamma radiation? Genetically engineered supper spiders? No general audience really knows anything about these things, and yet they work for SUSPENDING DISBELIEF!).

I would love to see Megs and Soundwave be the same as the originals. To me comparing this particular aspect to Spiderman’s web shooters is a little too general. Sure Spidy’s web shooters were mechanical in the comic, but he still shoots webs right? A transformer’s altmode is a part of its spark that’s why Tellatran gave them their specific and individual altmodes. Giving a different alternate mode to a Transformer would be like giving Spiderman supper FLY powers; he would be a completely different character.

That being said, I understand that they won’t be the same (Don Murphy has already made that very clear), and I’m OK with that. Hasbro can’t make a toy gun, and tape decks are just out dated now a days. I’m all for a tank or a large cannon, like MW Megs, I think either of those options would capture the essence of “Living Weapon that was Megatron (not to mention his WWI altmode was a tank, and that’s considered G1). But, I’m not sure how they could translate Soundwave into something other than a tape deck and keep the same “big silent bot with an army of mini bots at his command feeling…

… Maybe He could be a heavily armored com. truck and his minions could be rectangular plaits of armor that com off of him and transform, that could be cool, then the mini bots could be a part of Soundwave, like bits of his evil self breaking off and spying, infiltrating and causing all kinds of havoc … hmm… Yeeesssssssss!! :tfevil :thumb

(Genetic mutation? Gamma radiation? Genetically engineered super spiders? No general audience really knows anything about these things, and yet they work for SUSPENDING DISBELIEF!)

I think this is the core of the problem. You can't mess with physics too much or you lose the audience. People are okay with radiation giving a person super-powers, but mass changing would be too much for the audience to swallow. I'm sure they'd understand it, but they wouldn't buy it. Hell, I don't buy it either, I think it's cheesy.

Arguably, neither the radiation nor the mass changing is more absurd than the other. But the audience is more used to the radiation storyline, so they're more likely to accept it.

Giving a different alternate mode to a Transformer would be like giving Spiderman supper FLY powers; he would be a completely different character.

I agree, although I think that the character could still work if the different alternate modes are thematically similar. For example, a tank for Megatron would be acceptable (for me at least) since it's very much like a gun.

Soundwave could be acomunications tuck and the cassets could be those robots the military and the polise use to de-bomb stuff.

For example, a tank for Megatron would be acceptable (for me at least) since it's very much like a gun.

Since megatron has been a tank before :P
