Why G1 was So Great

G1 was good in its day. It still is, or at least we think it is because of that little word spelled N-O-S-T-A-L-G-I-A. Nostalgia, and 20 years of clouded memories and imagination will polish up anything. G1 toys were great then, since most of us left our hotwheels behind for them. But look at one now, and many are absolute CRAP!!! I have G1 Hound next to BT Hound and its just embarassing. But the concept was there. BT/Alt Jazz would sell for crap if it werent for the G1 character that anyone with one active brain cell loved like a friend. Same goes for all the Alts.

The homages are great. They allow us to enjoy something familiar but updated to a greater extent than the Alts are. The mix of homages and original toys is a way to let everyone enjoy a slice of the pie.

Repaints are fine. So long as the mold youre repainting is strong enough to deserve it (E Starscream) and not a poorly designed piece of buttrelease (Armada Sideswipe).

But to totally slam G1 and everyone in it because YOU dont like it, and to regard anyone who does like theyre morons is a sign of your own closed minded head-up-your-ass perspective. Someone in here sounds a HELL of a lot like a mirror image of the fanboys he claims to hate so much. Guess what? Who cares about your opinon?

Bottome line: Get over it. Right now, there's something for everyone in the TF world. G1, Beast modes, Car modes, poseability, realistic alt modes, detailed robot modes and damn near any series of cartoon you like is either on now or on DVD. Pretty much everyone except for the one guy who wants to see a Masterpiece Wheelie re-done as a levitating nuclear powered porta pottie has something out there for him. So enjoy what YOU like, steer clear of what you dont, dont slam anyone else for what they like and if youre stupid, just shut the F!@# up already!!!!!

And speaking of other shows that made no sense (Knight Rider, A-Team) what about this: Sure I watched the Dukes of Hazzard, but even at 5 y/o I had to snicker every time that damn car squealed its tires on a DIRT FREAKING ROAD!!!!

Outrider, I am gonna go off topic and follow down the dukes of hazard path...

As a kid growing up in the inner city, why did i like a car with the CONFEDERATE flag on the roof... I guess I just liked fast cars and women in hot pants, go figure...

My two cents:

I love G1 for one major reason and that's because it was the first ... the innovator. I love it not just because it's the first ... but because of these reasons which some of you hate: 1) nostalgia ... because G1 is the foundation for all else that comes after, whether we love or hate the idea/concepts created after it ... it's the standard bearer for which all else is compared to no matter how outdated it becomes because it set the standards which we live by ... 2) G1 was good in it's own time ... because comparing G1 to the current stuff is comparing our generation to our parents' generation, it's a dual-edge sword by which you will succeed and fail at the same time everytime you try and argue for one over the other ... 3) Because G1 was my favorite. It's not about which one is better per say but it's about which one enyoy more ... whether you like one more than the other or you like all the lines equally like I do.

As for what I think is better ... check below:

Cartoon:

1) Beast Wars/Beast Machines - because they took what we loved about G1 and what we loved about some of the newer stuff and put it together all in one show (I think they were ahead of their time and they will be very hard to overcome) ... who can complain about new ideas with great toys and great references to the original show that started it all and it even made sense, which is why it made for such a great show. Albeit Beast Machines was kinda weird in the character development especially for the TF universe, the show itself was good in that it kept to the mythology well and it made sense ... even if a bunch of ppl thought Cybertron being organic was stupid ... it still made sense.

2) G1 ... no matter how many goofs/mistakes there are ... when I watch all my DVD's, I still enjoy a lot of the episodes ... even the nutty ones. And the movie, by which all Transformers episode should be compared to (no matter how many dumb things). Some of the G1 episodes are better than some of the Energon episodes while some are just terrible compared to the rest. RID sucked though, but had great toys that I love.

3) Energon ... improving ... better than Armada ... I like Kicker and Alexis is a not a bad character, at least she's got some substance from Armada. Tends to get boring though, but that's only because I have such high expectations from it since I am not 10 anymore and watching it religously like G1.

Toys: (take into effect of all pros and cons of all lines)

1) Energon - great toys that found a way to combine all that we love about G1 and the great leaps in technology for all tf toys that came after G1. A line that seems to be able to ground itself into it's roots and still bring something new to the table that's innovative (whether you like it or not).

2) G1 - blame it on nostalgia or whatever, it still has some of the best toys in it and some of the greatest concepts for the TF universe, even if some of the execution of some it wasn't all that great. For example, duocons were great ideas, but bad execution in G1, but look at what they have done with that idea in Energon. They took it and developed it and now we got great powerlinking toys that increase play value and variety ... headmasters, targetmasts and powermasters were the minicons in the G1 days. They've just taken our line and revolutionized it.

3) RID and Beast Machines and Beast Wars (Japan included) - Sure, RID sucked as a show, but the toy line was all about gestaults and cool innovative transformations ... w/o RID, there would be no advancements in the TF line ... Beast Machines were some great toys that I didn't purchase but I can still appreciate them. Beast Wars were very well made with great ideas (some worked, some didn't) during the peak of it's run ... especially the Beast Wars Neo. Didn't care for the beginning or the last years of Beast Wars/Machines line though, but all around, the BW/BM line was very good.

Lemme tell ya, fast cars and chicks in ass-cheek-revealing shorts are a powerful force. In fact, if I wanted to take over the world, thats what Id have an army of....

hmmm... my first ever post on TFans... anyway, it's time to add my two cents to this discussion...

Generation 1 is great, since it was obviously the first generation of Transformers, which in turn inspired plenty of great shows and toys. While the TV show was constantly plagued by animation errors (if you watched the original ones) and some of the episodes had dumb plots (Carnage in C-Minor, if that's the one, has an absurd plot with sound travelling through space; i wonder how many dead scientists are turning in their graves), it was mostly good, with memorable characters we came to like and relate to. And as for the G1 toys, while they are not as fancy now as they used to be, they're still cool, since they're getting re-released. They may be bricks by today's standard, but most of the original and early toys were made with good quality, which kinda shows that good work pays off.

However, that said and done, i think it's time to move on; as much as G1 is popular, and it still is, it's best to move on into the future. We must come to accept all future generations of Transformers, like 'em or hate 'em, so even if you don't like a particular generation (in my case, Armada/Energon), it's best to not hate them completely, but to at least acknowledge their existance. A certain member of TFans has even gotten as far as to call non-G1 toys a waste of plastic (you know who i'm talking about), which is just wrong. Hatred of something will eventually breed hatred of something else, and so on. It's time to move on now. While G1 is, and will always be, great, we should embrace the future and see what's in store for us.

Oh no...not YOU again...

Face it, Transformers have advanced since G1. Better posability, (IMHO) better designs, and new gimmicks that most of the time improve on the toys.

To make a long story short: Transformers: 1984-present, meaning they continue to live on.

Excluding Alternators then where are the realistic alternate modes? In Energon and Armada in particular? If there are none then I see absolutely no difference between the Transformers of today and Power Rangers.
