Why G1 was So Great

Recommended Posts

G1 is not why Beast wars was great at all, Beast wars was great because of its awsome story and great character development that was actually there. Im sorry dude but you cant compare G1 to Beast wars, and Armada was not the worste. The only show that G1 even comes close to being superior too is RID and thats story wise. Rid had the best animation and designs in my opinion. Oh and Energon isnt trying to be better than armada it is better than armada :P

I guess you must have dyslexia or something.

I said that we like Beast Wars because it is what G1 could have been if it were done the same way. We like it because it has that connection to G1 and think, "if only . . .".

Here's how TF cartoons rank (in terms of quality and overall, indescribable feel):

1. Beast Wars

2. G1

3. BM (I don't like, but it was well made.)

4. RID

5. Energon

6. Armada.

ah a list for the shows in your "opinion" should be ranked based how much they entertained you.

Here is mine based on how much they entertained me. Of course, IMO

1. Beast Wars

2. Energon

(Its a very close call between these first 2, Ill just place them based on which came first)

3. BM

4. RID

5. Armada

6. G1

Now based on the quality of animation

1. BM

2. Energon

3. Beastwars

4. RID

5. Armada

6. G1

I am a 3D animator/Model Builder for a game company with some experience in 2D animation and I can appreciate the work going into the shows.

Beastmachines definitely had the most work put into it. Very beautiful CG! work for a Saturday morning show. Those shows have to be cranked out in ridicolous time frames.

G1 was the first, and everything since will be compared to it. Since it is the definitive version of Transformers, it's safe to say it's "the best", overall.

I think I still didn't bring up the "Ford T" counter argument often enough...

See: The Ford T started the whole Ford industry of today. And yet, no-one would actually consider it to be the "definite" version of the Ford cars as of today...

The show was good

No

the movie was excellent

Entertaining yes, "good" no (remember that it bombed back in the day? It didn't start to pay off for Hasbro until Geewun purists started to rediscover it.)

and most of the toys were too

If you consider brickiness and the fact that most of them look quite different from their cartoon counterparts "excellent"...

Sure, they had some bad ones, but they had some great ones, too. Think of the play value you had with Megatron as a kid?

In gun or robot mode?

As for play value for children, well, I don't think that's something that should really be considered in this forum, should it? I mean, this isn't Consumer Reports - it's about collecting toys, not playing with them. Who cares what a five-year-old thinks?

Hasbro?

Beast Wars was in the same continuity as G1, right? Does it even count, then?

Yes, it does, if only for the reason that otherwise Geewun purists might attempt to pass it off as a part of G1 and say "Geewun was teh best! It even had Beastwars!!!!1!11111one"

Alternators - definitely the best toys so far, but it doesn't have any real storyline, so you can't really judge it the same way. It sounds like this might fit into G1 continuity as well - time will tell.

And yet, the toys are superior to the G1 bricks.

Yep, Nostalgia is definitely clouding everyones rational judgement here.

No its not. People are always saying nostalga this and nostalga that, but it boils down to the fact that some of us like the G1 cartoon better than Energon. Nostalga be damned. Deal with it. Your long-winded explanations don't make me like Energon any more, I assure you. I will never like Energon more until they get rid of that ridiculous generic transform crap. Whenever my wife watches Energon with me she says the same thing, it sucks.

I think deez is an old guy like me so I wont throw anything at him, he is cool. I am not gonna take time to read thru the posts before I put my two cents in, G1 rocks. I was there, 20 years ago on xmas my parents got me this little white care with red and green stripes, because I had a similar diecast that I loved and this guy also could be a robot, pretty novel. so along all the GI joes and hotwheels was a lone wheeljack it was ultra cool (and a brick) the cartoon was on and the comic was awsome and I WAS LIVING IT, i was 9. most of these g1 purists werent even born so they are hanging on to MY memories. I was in the theater on august 16th 1986 (yeah I know the date) at 11 years old watching little kids burst into tears when optimus prime died (i almost did) THEY WERE LIVING IT. Unless you were there you have no right being a G1 purist. If you are yonger that prime, beat it. How can you worship blaster and soundwave if you have never seen a G-damn cassette?!?

*takes a deep breath*

I am not saying that you cant appreciate the original, everyone (even bodycount) does and with good reason, it built a foumdation for the best and most creative toyline ever in this country. what diaclone and microman created would have died as a novelty if not for the g1 cartoon.

Which brings me to my next point. The problem is that HASTAK is relatively lazy. I have no problem admitting that sunbeam was one of the worst animation studios ever (there have been more that 1 episodes of spiderman with him swinging on no web) but the g1 storyline was good. and exponentially better that the ones that followed *am exluding beast wars because I did not really watch past the 1st season*

beast machines was pretty lame. and then we got RID, some of the most impressive toys I had ever seen (even the car collector guys were impressed) and the dumbest cartoon I have ever seen anywhere, it was so bad and so poorly recieved that fox washed their hands of the franchise. and although armada (lame kids) and energon (lame ironhide, although the yodeling decepticon rocks) are better than rid cartoon wise they have some of the same problems with animation and dubbing that the g1 cartoon had and on top of that they make no effort at drawing the transformation (one of the coolest things I remeber about beast wars was watching CGI primals waist spin around, the corners on that show were not cut at least what I saw) anyway HasTak treats these cartoons as infomercials for there toys and always have, no different than any other toy inspired cartoon. but now they dont even try to fool us and that lazyness is why so many people try to cling to g1 because overall it is the only time when hastak gave its best effort.

I editted post to appologize for rant and any disrepect. Also to appologize for long post (i guess this make the post longer :tflaugh1 should have broke it up to increase post count ) :monkey

but the g1 storyline was good

Which "storyline" exactly are you referring to? Unless you mean the G1 comic, which indeed did have one. The G1 cartoon consisted almots solely of standalone episodes, and at the end of each episode, someone hit a huge reset button. Thus, no "storyline".

touche

I should have said storylines

I don't think the Ford Model T argument applies here. I think it's safe to say that when the average person thinks of Transformers, he thinks of G1. That may not apply to people who are big fans of Energon or whatever, but it probably also applies to most of the people on this board. It was the "definitive" version of the transformer line, and since it has obviously had the most influence on every line to date, not to mention a lot of non-Transfomer lines as well, it's hard to say that it's not "the greatest". The "definitive argument" isn't going to apply to EVERYTHING (case in point - the Model T), but it does apply here.

Of course the toys are going to be more posable and articulated than their 20 year old counterparts, and the same goes for the animation. But the argument that "newer is better" doesn't always apply. Transformers just aren't the phenomenon that they were with kids in the 80s. I'm glad it's still around, in some form or another, but the whole Energon line looks like just a rehashed version of the original.

Yes, the Energon cartoon looks better than the G1 - it's a bit cleaner, more detailed. But compare Energon to other animated series today and it comes up short. G1, back in the day, looked better than the other cartoons of its time (except for GI Joes, which had the same style of animation). Look at some of the other series out there today - Justice League, X-Men Evolution, the new Turtles... I'm 26, and these are watchable - heck, I enjoy them more than the "adult" sitcoms out there, that's for sure. I love Transformers, but for the life of me I can't STAND watching Energon. It's awful - it's like every other Japan-imported cartoon out there. Maybe something gets lost in the translation, I don't know.

And Nevermore, of course Hasbro cares about kids buying their toys, but that doesn't apply here and you know it (unless you're ten or something - I don't know). By that logic we could argue that Tickle Me Elmo is better than any Transformer.

I'm personally tired of people telling me why I like G1, your a purist or it's nostalgia, and I ask, do you know me personally? If not, then quit with putting words in my mouth. I don't sit here and tell anyone else why they like a certain series, I respect them enough to allow their own decision. On topic, I prefered G1 because it was short story adventures. It moves the show around more. BW was no different in the early episodes, short stories, it wasn't all focused on the disc until later. Of coarse the G1 tie in made it impossible to miss, it made the show a desperate situation for the Maximals to win. I also prefer the larger armies in G1, that way you go out and buy the toys and live adventures with a variety of characters without having to buy repaints of him that is the same personality as before with a different colour. I would also like to understand where people tend to think G1 characters had little personality, I started a thread to discuss this intelligently and ended up with bashing and no points from the other side, this implies they can't prove their opinion. (Flawed Characters) Gen Disc.

If you visit the thread, the point is to pick a character and describe who he was, not to bash someone else's view. If you want to write a review of the same guy the way you saw him, then go for it. The only point of the thread was to provide proof for all to read and compare and it fell way short unfortunatly.

I think deez is an old guy like me so I wont throw anything at him, he is cool. I am not gonna take time to read thru the posts before I put my two cents in, G1 rocks. Thanks dude, I am an old guy. I would still have my Transformers the Movie ticket stub if I hadn't mailed it in for a mail-order Transformer that they were offering at the time.

The model T argument is a bunch of crap. If you really want to compare cars, compare a 1968 Cobra Jet Mustang to a 2004 Mustang. Because I still think the '68 Cobra Jet is better, regardless of its lack of options. Much like the G1 toys.
