Why G1 was So Great

Recommended Posts

I think the cartoon was better for the simple fact that when they transformed, they didn't have that generic pose transform crap that's in the Energon cartoon.  That is so cheap!  I mean c'mon.

Yes, I agree. With all of Energons CGI, it only shows how low in quality and how little time is spent on the show. The G1 cartoon transformations are a sign of the work and care that was put into the show. :thumb

Are you serious? First of all, the Energon Models are very detailed and look very good. That alone tells me they really cared about how the characters looked.

And if you call a man made of boxes melting into the vague shape of a car a transformation sequence then Id imagine that Energon would be super awesome fantastic for you.

Sorry, this isnt a personal attack. Im just tired of people putting down Energon and saying that G1 is better. It really isnt.

Energon can be more detailed because they are CGI. When it comes that, you are comparing grapes to watermelons.

CGI models are made once and never need to be made again. Each transformation in G1 is drawn by hand and is set in the actual scene where its taking place. Energon transformation are made only once and reused over and over again.

True, but someone made those models with care, and Someone had to animate the initial transformation sequence and someone had to go back and composite the special effects and even the background.

You were saying Energon is low quality implying G1 wasnt of low quality and actually of better quality than Energon. Im saying, Energon is infact one of the higher quality satuday morning shows today and that G1 atleast compared to the shows of today is of very low quality. G1 might have been the bomb back in the day compared to its competitors but it cant even compete with the quality of Tf shows in this generation being RID Armada and Energon.

Energon doesn't feel right. I think that it has to do with the craptacular cel-shading of the CGI characters. Had they gone the realistic route, like Beast Wars, Energon would look great.

You're kidding, right?

About the only episodes I'd dare claiming "work and care was put into" are "Atlantis Arise" and of course "Call of the Primitives" (although the latter suffered from a childish Don Glut script). And still even they had stupid animation errors like Prime standing and watching a second Prime save the Washington memorial from collapsing.

Watch the episodes again. Count how often Optimus Prime's "Autobots, transform... and roll out!" transformation sequence from MTMTE is recycled. Sometimes it's mirrored, sometimes the sequence is reversed (from truck to robot instead of from robot to truck), sometimes it's using another background... but that doesn't change the fact that (almost) every G1 episode from the first two seasons is recycling Prime's transformation sequence over and over again.

Then watch the dreaded Akom episodes from season 2, namely "The Core", "City of Steel" and "The Autobot Run". Don't even dare telling me that those hacks gave a single **** about what they were doing. Especially with the character models and their movements all looking as if they came directly from a cr@ppy Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

Akom's quality slightly improved in season 3, but not much. "Five Faces of Darkness" and "Carnage in C-Minor" are not really known for their lack of stupid animation errors... And the fact that Toei, who had been getting better with each season and who gave us the (awfully written, but) eye-candy gem named "Call of the Primitives" were more and more neglected by Hasbro in favor of the cheap Akom crew didn't actually help.

Season 3 has an episode that has great animation but a terrible script ("Call of the Primitives") and an episode that has a decent script but poor animation ("Dark Awakening"). You'll never find both in Geewun.

Grapes and watermelons, Nevermore, grapes and watermelons. Even old Gundam epsisodes look bad compared to the ones from recent years.

Maybe, but thats not whats in right now. Right now kids are into anime so thats the way it has to be.

Well, the best G1 came up with animation-wise was "Call of the Primitives", right? Compared to that, most of the rest of the show looked like cr@p.

Yes, it's just that I have more respect for cel animation than I do CGI, even if it is lousy.

Key word "Look", they still hold up because the characters are three dimesional, the plot and storyline are top notch etc. Only thing to complain about in old Gundam were some bizarre designs.....old Gundam is still comparable to its latter day successors like 0080, 0083, SEED, and in some cases is BETTER than its successors (Wing)

G1 on the other hand STILL has flat, 2-D characters who NEVER evolve (well, some Season 3 characters like Rodimus did, but people hated them in favor of shallow S1&2 characters), STILL had weak and childish plots (Megs crazy idea of the week, "new toy" episode, etc) and save maybe for RID, is inferior compared to the writing of its successors
