Why G1 was So Great

Recommended Posts

hmmm... good to see that therevolutionishere may change his ways... anyway, yeah, before the movie, the G1 toyline was a repaint fest, but in the post-movie episodes, there were original toy concepts for the series (but they were bricks). and what about the Japanese toy series like Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory? they're technically part of G1, and while still bricks, they were way better than the post-movie G1 toys.

this could seriously be a solution for G1 purists who are lacking toys, and are search for anything that is not a repaint. i've heard that Victory Leo was quite good; although i don't have one myself, i do recommend getting it.

And G1 was a line of repaints until the Movie came.  (Never thought I'd say this myself, but it's true, the beginning of G1 was a complete repaint party with molds from many companies used in it, yeah, very original indeed.)

Yes, but G1's repaints were all made into different characters with different personalities, and even though they were repaints, they LOOKED different in their creativeness in the repainting. RID, Armada, and Energon, although many of the molds are quite excellent, when repainted aren't different figures at all, just "powered-up" versions of the originals. It's tiring to see the same character repainted over and over again, it's monotonous. Granted, we're getting repaints as different characters in Universe, such as the Hot Shot to Smokescreen repaint. It looks good and it makes sense, but it's taking a previous mold into a new line, different storyline. I mean, when you look at G1, you see Smokescreen, Prowl, and Blue/Silverstreak. They're the same basic toy, but most people don't see them as that, they see them as seperate individual characters/toys. Same with the seekers, God forbid thou who confuses Dirge with Skywarp. But look at Armada, Hot Shot became... Hot Shot with new colors. They almost split multiple characters out of a mold with Starscream, but they kept him the same character in the show instead of different characters sharing the similar form. And even though the figure is called Thundercracker, everyone sees him instead as powered-up Starscream. Now, look at AT/BT. Smokescreen and Silverstreak still share the same basic mold with minor retooling, same as before. Do most people see them as the same toy, or as two seperate toys because of their established personalites as different individuals? It's one of the things that made G1 great, is even though many figures were repaints/retools of each other (and from previous lines), they are viewed as their own individual selves with their own personalities. They are who they are. I'm almost certain if HasTak decided to market their new lines repaints as seperate characters and introduce them along side the existing characters in the series, the outcry of "Not another repaint" would quiet down quite a bit. I know myself I'd feel better buying another version of the same toy if the character is different from the version I already have.

Oh I agree. But times have changed. As long as Transformers will be done by Hasbro AND Takara, we'll get the repaint "powerups".

Some day you guys will realize i'm just fighting for the right for ALL Transformers series to have a right to exist, in the first place....=P

There are some great poeple on this forum, but they're all hindered by these "Geewun rulz!" guys...its getting to where we can't even discuss what we like without one of them popping up and slamming us for liking the new stuff....I realize I don't hate G1, I just won't put up with their purist followers.

As opposed to everybody having to put up with your anti-G1-fan hatred?

Get over it. You must realize by now that you aren't going to change anybody's mind by arguing over the net. At least, I think you're bright enough to figure that out ...

Listen carefully, all of you. Just because somebody on the internet doesn't like something doesn't mean you can't like it. And it works the same in reverse. If you don't like something, don't expect everyone to have the same opinion.

And you know what? That nostalgia argument really doesn't work. Ever think that maybe people prefer the older TF's for reasons other than because that's what they grew up with? Didn't think so.

And now back to our regularly scheduled G1-fan bashing ...

Wildling pretty much sums it up :thumb

If you dont like G1 or dont have a valid reason as to what made it good, you shouldnt really be posting in this thread.

Ah, you see, you can't just protect it from all the negativity by just claiming I'm not allowed to speak of it. This isn't a communist message board, and I have the right to comment on what I choose, friend.

MikePrime....All Transformers are for kids. Toys are for kids in general. Even Alternators. I had some lego sets as a kid that were a ton more complicated than an Alternator toy. As for the tv show's maturity, the end of Armada and all of Energon is more violent than anything G1 did without it's "PG rating" stamp of the movie. That's not a bash on anything, but an observation.

I never said you couldn't comment. My suggestion is just to tone it down a bit. All you're accomplishing by being so militant is splitting the board into three groups : Pro-G1, Anti-G1, and the annoyed middle ground. That does no good for anyone.

I don't hate G1, I just won't put up with their purist followers.

My question to you right now is this : Let's pretend you ran across an Armada purist who was very vocal in his bashing of all other lines including Energon. Would you have the same response to that poster as you do to the fans of G1? Or would you have more tolerance because it was a newer line?

And no, there is no sarcasm intended.

and i happen to be one of those annoyed middle-ground guys who is tired of deciding whether this topic is about why G1 is so great or about the purist/non-purist situation...

Love the animation models(for lack of better term) for the old series. Transformation looked almost magical, and the stylized versions of the toys looked plenty cool. Though it lead to plenty a disappointment when I actually got the toy.

transformers are transformers. G1 G2 energon armada whatever. Just keep em coming. :thumb

:beer Damn streight. I love the BEAST WARS/BEAST MACHINES TRANSFORMERS and am an older TRANSFORMERS fan. As much as I love G1 and POP OPT is the greatest AUTOBOT of all times, it was the BEAST WARS and the darker story line and mythology that brought me back into collecting and becoming a TRANSFAN once again. It was PRIMAL that had brought back a lot of what made me sooo nostalgic for what was good in G1 and his fanaticism about CYBERTRON becoming what it once was and more than it could ever be that made my eyes gloss with anticipation and excitement at what these small factions were going to be doing next. And each time was a great surprise.

All generations are fantastic from G1 to ENERGON and whatever it to come after I'm pretty sure that will be cool as well. My only thing is I wonder if OPTIMUS and MEGATRON were out of the total picture and there were new leaders as when RODIMUS PRIME was the focal point of the story, would TRANSFORMERS be as good without these leaders or do we need them to keep the story fluid?

:tftongue

Yeah, Beast Wars did a lot to renew TF interest among those of us who grew up with it. Armada and Energon ARE pretty much for kids... I'm not saying that an adult can't appreciate them, but they don't seem geared to us at all. Beast Wars gave us an extended G1 universe, but didn't dumb down the characters, and in doing so appealed to fans both young and old (kind of like the Justice League cartoon).

Too bad the toys sucked. I want an MP Dinobot!

As for G1, it really does boil down to nostalgia and the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I enjoyed the TF universe I grew up with and I still do, with the reissues, Beast Wars series, comics and Alternators. You really have to take into account this "extended G1 universe" to understand why it's so great. Armada and Energon (RiD even more so) are just imitations of the original, when you get right down to it.

Saying the toys have better posability, etc... Sure that's a given, but it doesn't mean it's BETTER. Everything has to be taken into proper context - the G1 toys were AMAZING for the time. Besides, one can use that argument to say that the Star Wars prequels are better than the originals because they have better effects and a slicker look to them, which we all know isn't true!

My take:

G1: the best toys decent cartoons with a ton of good characters

G2: the same cartoons, good reissues at first, crappy new TF's later on

MW: Crap

BW: crappy toys (with exceptions like Silverbolt), but the best TF cartoon yet.

BW Neo/BW2 (Japan): better toys than th US BW and anime cartoon that wasn't as good

BM: crap toys and hippie tree-hugger cartoon.

RID: mediocre anime but cool toys

Armada: don't like the toys and don't like the pokemon-bot anime; that is until Unicron arrives

Energon: So far don't like the anime at all, and the toys are 50/50 good/bad with me

20th anniv Convoy/Prime: the best TF ever in terms of quality and detail. We need more like this!

Alternators: Excellent series that suffers from Hasbro and/or Takara's apparent refusal to make anything but cars.
