Why aren't Alternators original characters?

*sigh* Well, LM your thread has been Hijacked.....

Well, you see, this is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. All of this back-and-forth bitching is just annoying and counter-productive. People talk about Grimlock being degraded because he's a Mustang, and other people basically tell them to f*ck off for whatever reason... all of this is obscuring the fact that the Grimlock Alternator is a really cool figure. The G1 connection IMO is a weight around the neck of the Alternators, and has inspired a great deal of divisiveness in the fandom. Instead of celebrating these figures, we're arguing about them. And that's a shame.

I see where your coming from. Since the toys are based on characters we know and love we get EXPECTATIONS about what they should look like. And, just like movie trailers, having expectations leads to people feeling "let down" when it's not the way they want to see it.

I'm not going to lie, originally I said "What have they done to my DINOBOT grimlock......a mustang.....T-Rex EATS MUSTANGS!!!!" but when I took a step back from the situation and analyzed it I realized that if grimlock needed a new body (provided by humans) a car would make an OBVIOUS choice. For one thing it allows him to have an actual disguise. My only real complaint is that it dosn't seem big enough, but then again I don't own one so I really can't vouch for it's scale.

Back on topic though, I do like the nostalgia of the line and it DEFINITELY was what helped me get hooked. I'm not OPPOSED to other characters being in the line, but I would like to update as many of my G1 characters as possible.

My only problem with Grimmy is that they shoulda scrapped his 'bot mode and used a T-Rex instead, and have the 'Stang, H2, or whatever as his alt mode. The stang works just fine, it was a bit of a surprise though. And the Mustang is a GREAT performance car, the new one looks awesome, the best since the 60's.

I actually liked Grimlock's robot mode best. One of the worst decisions they made regarding his character in Season 3 was to have him remain in dino mode almost all of the time. The cartoon design of that mode made him look silly ("why boy hit my nose?"), a far cry from the very aggressive-looking toy version.

and who could forget......

Mind you, Alternator Hot Shot wouldn't be a bad idea if they could get the Vanquish. Mmmm...Vanquish.

Exactly, and considering that the Vanquish is pretty popular right now and Aston Martin is owned by Ford, it isn't outside the realm of possibility.

As much as I was disappointed to see Grimlock as a car, seeing him as a Steam Shovel in RID was even worse. Makes the mustange Grimlock not seem near as bad.

The tech specs on RiD Grimlock had him out to be a totally different character than G1 Grim. They just hapenned to share the same name. :tfevil

I really like the idea of the Alternator line as a "continuation" of G1. I do, however, think that some original characters are in order. New characters that can fight alongside our favorite G1 heroes.

Also, some Beast Wars Alternators would not go unwanted. I can definitely see Cheetor and Rhinox as a Prowler and a H2, respectively.

I agree.

According to Ben Yee, of BWTF.com, the Binaltech story makes it sound like a continuation of G1 characters, because also on the Meister (Jazz) box in Japan, the translated story, says that the Autobots send their best agent, Jazz, to go and find out how the Decepticons got the Binaltech process to help their soldiers. But in the process needs to be rebuilt as a Binaltech TF after getting discovered by the 'Cons.

Here's the Binaltech story: (keep in mind, that if Hasbro had decided to make a story for the Alternators, it would probably be something like this)

In the year 2003, the Autobots are slowly being destroyed by a powerful corrosive rust set upon them by the evil Decepticons. With Megatron and his troops advancing and the humans increasingly in danger, a final, desperate project is put into action - human created Transformers. Thus, the newest Transformers are born via a new technology: Binaltech!

My only real complaint is that it dosn't seem big enough, but then again I don't own one so I really can't vouch for it's scale.

Yeah, for right now it looks as though Alternators are only coming in one size. We don't yet have the variations of past lines, such as Armada's Minicons, Supercons, and Maxcons, or G1's Mini Cars, Jets, Autobot Leader, etc.

I'd say if people are willing to pay the $40 or $50 for an Optimus Prime, Omega Supreme, or Unicron, or $7 or so for smaller figures, then they would also for figures in the Alternators line (as long as they're on the same scale).
