Why aren't Alternators original characters?

Recommended Posts

Using these names has probably a lot to do with copyright. Hasbro/Takara owns these names and has to keep using them to keep owning them. Making up new names isn't hard, but you run the risk of using a name which already exists (means paying copyright).

I also think the connection with G-1 is there on purpose. Many of the original G-1 fans are indeed at the car buying age (although I have neither license, money or need for a car, so I won't buy one).

I myself like the G-1 connection. (Actually, Alternators is exactly what I wanted: I care very little for the reissues, but would've liked to see updated version of those figures: similar transformation, realistic cars and great poseability => Alternators). This doesn't mean I'll be mad when they decide to use BW, BM, RiD, Armada of Energon names/characters. I for one love Alt Battle Ravage and will buy a second to repaint into Tigertron.

There is just one things which slowly starts to annoy me about Alternators. So far there basically are two methods of transformation. Especially the way in which the hood becomes the shoulders chest has been used to the limits in my opinion (Smokescreen/Silverstreak, Hound/Swindle, Meister & Zoom-zoom/unknown, Grimlock/unknown). We need some deviations. I would very much like to see figures in which the hood becomes the chest as with G-1 Sideswipe/Red alert. (I'm hoping they make Ironhide like the RiD version.)

I also think it's about time we get some larger figures: all Alternators so far are Mega sized. A few Ultra's wouldn't be bad. Construction vehicles come to mind, perhaps Ironhide as some badass huge pickup truck, also maybe small car carriers (for a single car) named Soundwave and Blaster/Ultra Magnus -- would enable Soundwave to carry his cassettes.

Really just love Alternators. :clap :clap

Ironhide as the new Ford F-250 its just big and badass. and come on ford pickup screams old redneck ironhide persona

speaking about grimlock, I have seen the painted proto in person, and let me tell you, it screams GRIMLOCK. it seems to be bigger than the other alts/bts and looks much more powerful and menacing. also, it gives one the feeling that it is one badass character that is not to be trifled with....

so to those who say that grimlock has been degraded, i beg to differ. grimlock still rocks! :thumb

Am I the only one that likes the idea of the Mustang Grimlock? I think it looks really cool

It degrades Grimlock.

Not nearly as much as his Pretender figure does. You wanna talk about small, that's just ridiculous.

You admit yourself making him a dalmation raptor was kind of...iffy. Did you boycott Beast Wars?

I mean, I love Grimlock, but let's face facts. It's not like he's Batman, or Charlie Brown or anyone uber-recognizable to the general public like that. And they degrade those beloved characters in the name of the almighty dollar all the time.

Grimlock's a 20 year old character from a HUGE ensamble show that's lucky to be remembered as well as he is. And if he cares at all, I'm sure he's sittin' in fictional character land, rubbin' his Mustang toy in the face of Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors (and maybe those Spiral Zone guys), and liking it just fine.

If you never realized it, Grimlock is a fictional character. He's not gonna get his feelings hurt by becoming a Mustang. Move along purist, nothing left to say here.

Why don't you keep your trap shut Adolf.

But come on, just because you don't like the idea of Grimlock as a Mustang doesn't discount that there are a lot of good toys in the Alt/BT line. If I use your logic I should be boycotting as well because I'm not fond of Battle Ravage's cat head. :roll

Before the whole Grimlock smurf up I haven't even touched one because I don't like the toys period. I was considering getting Tracks and that was ONLY because he had wrist mounted blasters, the rest of the figure is just like all the others.

You admit yourself making him a dalmation raptor was kind of...iffy. Did you boycott Beast Wars?

No because I liked that particular figure and I could have repainted it to a decent color scheme if I ever found one. Can't repaint Alts Grimlock to a decent color scheme and have a good figure the mold for a good figure just doesn't exist.

*sigh* Well, LM your thread has been Hijacked.....

Alternators was supposed to be the adult collectors line, no? Why NOT play up the G1 relation? If they had the budget to write a backstory and create a comic and show, maybe they could've created original characters, sure, but I believe it's been said they purposedly weren't.

And they sort of HAVE to stick to G1. The whole point of Alternators was super-detailed highly articulated figures. It'd be pretty pointless to make a revision of already-highly articulated figures like RiD. These are toy upgrades, and G1 is the one most begging for an upgrade.

Mind you, Alternator Hot Shot wouldn't be a bad idea if they could get the Vanquish. Mmmm...Vanquish.
