Why aren't Alternators original characters?

Recommended Posts

I'm not opposed to Grimlock having a vehicle-based alt-mode (robot dinosaurs are somewhat of a silly concept that screams 80's dinosaur bandwagon jumping); however, I think a pick-up truck or SUV would have suited his brutish character better.

That said, I do think the Grimlock Mustang alternator is cool. I also like Battle Ravage for mixing it up some.

I'm not opposed to using some of the more popular Armada/Energon characters either, for instance, I'd like to see Hot Shot as an Aston Martin (since he practically is one anyway).

Am I the only one that likes the idea of the Mustang Grimlock? I think it looks really cool

It does look cool, just not quite big enough.

I think a few new/original characters would help the line a lot.

As long as they don't look like Ravage, man that thing is ugly. (nice alt mode though)

It degrades Grimlock.

How so?

Mustangs are pathetic, every spoiled rich girl in my town has one and every ridneck in the surounding counties has a used one they royally screwed over with their lack of care.

Mustang is not a cool vehicle, it might have once been but it no longer is, and making Grimlock into a Mustang is a degradation. The only thing suitable for Grimlock is an extremely badass military vehicle (See War Within) or a Dinosaur (as long as it is NOT a Dalmation Raptor). I may even consider a hummer but I would have to see it first.

I guess I understand. But making Grimlock a big, brute vehicle of some sort could get expensive.

I disagree that it degrades Grim. Is it something completely different than fans were expecting? Absolutely. You may be a Chevy person, you may not be a car person, or you might just look at the situation differently than others. My take on it is that the Mustang was key in starting the "muscle car" craze of the 60's and early 70's here in the US. To many people the Mustang is a prime symbol of power (especially the '67 which the new design is based on), also to many TF fans Grimlock is power personified. Aggressive, angry, brute straight forward strength... To me, the match couldn't be any better.

But what do I know, I'm one of those people that is going to call Meister, "Jazz." :thumb

As much as I was disappointed to see Grimlock as a car, seeing him as a Steam Shovel in RID was even worse. Makes the mustange Grimlock not seem near as bad.

Pathetic? No way... these are muscle cars. They CAN be a bit white trash, but regardless, it fits Grimlock as much as any car - more than most. They're also very well made...

A military vehicle might have been better, yes, but so far they aren't making any. If they do, maybe we'll get one, but I, for one, think this one is gonna be alright!

Now if they can only do a Lamborghini...

Oh yeah, and NO WAY do I want to see any Alternators that aren't G1. I probably wouldn't buy them if they weren't G1, to be quite honest. Some may say that I'd be missing out on some great figs, and that may be true, but for me it's all about nostalgia.

Exactly

Alternators isn't G1 but an alternate take on it. It ain't the same friggin' storyline nor does it take place during the old continuity.

BUT - I'll not lie...I wouldn't be into this line if it weren't G1. If this line had no G1 Homages or Characters why would I want yet another new line of TF toys? Sure they'd be great figures and nice car modes, but if they didn't have Homages to G1 in some way (doesn't have to be named like G1) then I wouldn't be collecting them. This one doesn't even have a real storyline so far (don't yell at me about BT's Story either, cause it ain't part of Alternators). No Story and No G1 Homages...kinda seems pointless to me. If it was it's own fully-supported story with no G1 Homages or Characters...then that's different.

Now I'm not a G1 Purist, so for god's sake don't call me that; I respect and like atleast some part of each and every TF toyline/cartoon since G1.

I like many Energon toys because of their G1 Homages. Starscream, Inferno, and Tow-Line I bought for their G1-eqsue designs. Then after that I fell in love with their overall coolness factor. Not all Energon toys I like are based on this...I bought Divebomb, Skyblast, and Strongarm simply cause I loved their designs and play/display value...had nothing to do with G1 Homages.

Alternators gives us the things G1 wanted to do but couldn't back then. It also is a great marketing plan. IF they start introducing Hot Shot, Rhinox, Cheetor, or Black Arachnia into the line, will I stop buying Alternators...Hell No...Would I stop buying Alternators if they completely said to hell with G1, BW, BM, Energon Homages/Characters and did completely new Characters...YES, because I don't want a new TF toyline outside the main toyline with no story that isn't a Homage-based line. To me that seems pointless, because it takes away from the actual STORY-Toyline.

Forget Arcee, Black Arachnia would make a cool Decepticon repaint for the Honda S2000 (a "spyder" is another name for open cockpit/convertible car after all ;) ).
