Don Murphy update - movie SPOILERS

Recommended Posts

Okay, when did Soundwave even read minds?  I can't remember him ever doing it.  What was it, one episode of season one?  And you people are taking it as canon for some reason?

Nope.. it's in his tech spec.

It's also a stupid power to try to translate to the big screen, IMO.

However, I think the techs are a good place to start as a basis for characterization in the movie... they're good little personality snippits as opposed to the cartoon which had little to none for most characters. Like the other comic property movies of late... at least somewhat basing them on original media will make them identifiable. :nuts

Agreed. Basing the Transformers on their Tech Specs is a good way to start. The cartoon was kind of spastic and a lot of the characters had little or no personality at all. However, there are exceptions. For some characters on the cartoon, the voice actors brought them to life and made a lasting imprint on the fans. For example, Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. His voice was so memorable and charismatic that he became Optimus Prime. I know whenever I read the Dreamwave comics, or any other comics, when I read Optimus Prime I hear Peter Cullen's voice as Prime. I know there are a heck of a lot of other people that think that way too.

And Frank Welker as Megatron,

Chris Latta (RIP) as Starscream

Scatman Crothers (RIP) as Jazz

I always hear their voices anytime I read anything with these characters.

I'd just like to add that anyone expecting John Waters to base the TF characters in this movie off the G1 tech specs is probably gonna be one sad little boy on Christmas morning.

P.S. Before I get that "first line from the TF movie" shoved in my face, I should clarify my comment:

This isn't going to be a live-action translation of the G1 cartoon anymore than X-Men was a live-action translation of Uncanny X-Men #1. It will be different. The characters will essentially be who we know them to be (for those TFs who actually "had* any character, that is), but don't expect this to be G1 all over again.

Exactly....rock on Madhammer...rock on!!

Yes I agree...

Whenever I read anything to deal with:

Prime, Ironhide, Jazz, Hound, Cliffjumper, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Devastator, and Shockwave

I think of their cartoon voices as I'm reading it.

BACK TO TOPIC...

I've been thinking bout this. While I'm still betting the Ambulance turned Fire Truck is Ratchet, what if it's not...what if it's First Aid? I mean I dobut it could be First Aid, but for some reason that name association to a change in vehicle seems good. Ah whatever...I'm sure it's just Ratchet.

I think what will happen is a few characters will be combined together for simplification. For example, there could be a Ratchet, but would incorporate characteristics of Red alert and Inferno as well as Ratchet. Actually, since it is now a fire truck, it could be called Inferno, but fill the role that Ratchet would normally have filled in the cartoon and comics.

For that reason I don't expect to see both Rumble AND Frenzy, but a combo of the two. Probably called Rumble.

That's what I was thinking of too...Like a combo of Red alert & Ratchet & First Aid called First Aid or whatever.

Like they could easily combine certain characters to simplify the processes that need to be done.

With this being a intro movie anyway, I wonder why there is a need for an ambulance turned firetruck character. Why not give us both, one now and one later? Hmmmm....why not just give us Inferno and just have Wheeljack put Autobots back together.

Cause I think it all comes down to what people might actually like to see. Some people wouldn't like the idea of a Mechanical Engineer being the Doctor/Surgeon.

I'm not saying I believe/want this...but It's a thought.

And let's be honest: did Inferno really distinguish himself as a character in the G1 cartoon? Not to me he didn't. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that he got less screen time than any other '85 Autobot "car" -- other than Skids, of course. Ratchet, on the other hand, is an essential TF character, period.

Yup...exactly.

I hope they only pick characters who have solid characterization. Such as Ratchet, Ironhide, Bumblebee, and whatnot.

If they combo certain characterizations from other lesser-known characters in characters who are similiar, it's not gonna make me mad.
