Don Murphy update - movie SPOILERS

Recommended Posts

Hey Mr. Murphy, if you're still reading this thread, I've got a question for you, if you don't mind answering it. I'll understand if you can't; you're a busy guy after all. Will the movie explain or touch upon why the Autobots and Decepticons are at war, other than "We're Decepticons, we're supposed to be evil"?

(It's just too bad that Chris Latta is no longer with us... :tfsad)

Yes, but Michael Dobson doesn't do a bad Starscream either. :thumb

He's the guy that did Terrorsaur isn't he? He did the voice for Starscream in the Beast Wars episode Possession right?

If that's him, he's pretty good. Unfortunately though, no one can really do that Starscream shreik like Chris Latta. Amazingly enougth; I had forgot about this until Madhammer and a few others told me; Latta also did Wheeljack as well. Starscream and Wheeljack sound nothing alike. I can tell the voices that Frank Welker did (and still does), and Peter Cullen doing Optimus Prime and Ironhide is pretty easy, but Starscream and Wheeljack sound totally different. You have to give Chris Latta credi for doing those. He was a very talented guy.

Yeah but can you tell Sludge and Megatron are the same guy? What about Rumble and Skywarp? Welker does have his range...hehe...

If ya'll are talkin' bout a blues kat for Jazz, pick the right kat:

Buddy Guy

One of TEH best blues playas out there still kickin it real.

His voice is quintessential blues yo!

Unfortunately he's too busy touring... :tdown

Just a thought.

I think what everyone's forgetting here is that if mass shifting goes it'll affect his telepathy, and as well all know with soundwave, he was one of those characters where his abilities heavily tied in with his character. That was where my question was aimed- have the rough alt mode changes that have been made had too drastic effect on his character?

I don't see the connection between mass shifting/his alt mode and telepathy. What is it about being a microcassette recorder that makes a TF able to read another TF's mind? Anyway, as I recall he only used that once, with the Dinobots.

Soundwave's real function was intelligence gathering, which he mainly used his little buddies for anyway. As long as he stays in that basic role, I think it'll be the character we're all used to.

Becasue it isn't just limitted to Transformers if you read his tech specs. The thing with a cassette recorder is that it allows him access into a room to scan just that room full of people. A surveilance vehicle if that's what he is, means he has to be able to scan an entire building. If it's still done well in a way that works, great- but if not then I'd kind of want to know in advance so it's not a downer when seeing the movie.

I don't get it. If he's big it won't work because he can't get into a small room? He can't be telepathic through walls or windows?

In all honesty I don't think Soundwave's telepathy is going to be a big feature in this film anyway. That's assuming it's even referred to at all. Most of the special abilities from the tech specs will likely be completely ignored just like Windcharger's magnetic control or Skid's ability to rarely be seen on screen.

According to his tech spec, Soundwave "reads minds" by processing the electrical impluses in their neurons. This has absolutely nothing to do with his cassette deck alt mode whatsoever.

In addition, I have to agree that a giant robot turning into a tiny, 20 year obselete piece of technology is just simply stupid for a modern day, live action film. Like the X-men's gaudy costumes being toned down in those flicks.. certain things just don't pan over to the big screen well. Cassette-wave is one of them. Personally, I think something along the lines of a communications van (think of those trucks CNN and the like have) is far better suited. So long as the robot mode is reasonably Soundwave-ish (and like the Alternators have proven.. you really just need the head sculpt and maybe a splash of color)... I think that's perfectly fine.

Also, Mr. Murphy, welcome to the boards. Definate Kudos to you for wading through the fanboyish crap to try to get some imput from us even though a vocal minority will hate the movie no matter how good it is. :nuts

First, You know we all luv ya right Bowspearer?

Second, the tech specs are for the toy line and cartoon. I really don't think that in the 70's & 80's there was a tape recorder made that could scan people in rooms.

But I do like your idea of Soundwave as a recon. vehicle that could somehow scan a room using radar or thermal heat....but reading minds is just too detailed for the movie. That should not make or break the movie for you. What will be a downer is if Soundwave has no minions!

Lol Funnay! :tflaugh

But actually, Windcharger did use his magnetic abilities once to pull Bumblebee out of a hole. Can't remember which episode offhand though.

I'd just like to add that anyone expecting John Waters to base the TF characters in this movie off the G1 tech specs is probably gonna be one sad little boy on Christmas morning.

P.S. Before I get that "first line from the TF movie" shoved in my face, I should clarify my comment:

This isn't going to be a live-action translation of the G1 cartoon anymore than X-Men was a live-action translation of Uncanny X-Men #1. It will be different. The characters will essentially be who we know them to be (for those TFs who actually "had* any character, that is), but don't expect this to be G1 all over again.
