Animated Voyager Earth-mode Optimus Prime is pretty terrible, actually

Recommended Posts

I figured out what's wrong with the waist, look closely at the piece the waist is attached to, you'll see a little slot, and the look at the part of the body where the waist touches, there's a peg there, all you gotta do is rotate and line them up, and viola! no more loose waist! :clap

You know, I looked mine over and was about to ask you what you're drinkin', when I found the slot! There's a round piece that goes down into the blue/yellow waist section, and up into piece that folds up into the upper torso. That round piece does have a notch, but it might not be in the front where it's supposed to be. Just transform him fully into bot mode, then pop the legs/waist back and you'll see the round piece in question. Now rotate the waist section around that round piece, do not rotate it so the legs/waist begin to fold backwards into alt mode. Do it right and you'll find the slot. Once you've got the slot and the tab lined up, just press the waist forward again and it'll stay put. The trick to keeping it together is to put some light forward/upward pressure on the waist as you pose it. It works.

Nice find HeeroYuy, thanks! :thumb

I super-glued his shoulder joints to stiffen them up, and modded his knees to let them rotate above the knee.

I'd skimmed over this when you first posted it, but then looked at the figure again and, sure enough, he's incapable of rotating his legs above the knee. What the hell, Hasbro? Basics can rotate above the knee! Frikin' Legends figures can rotate above the knee! Did they consciously go out of their way to screw this figure up in every conceivable way? And why the hell have none of the reviews mentioned this? This is even worse than that big gaping hole in Blackarachnia's chest that went completely unremarked-upon on all the early reviews of the figure. Did you just not notice this, people?

Some reviews are poorly written (or spoken, in the case of video reviews) and riddled with overt subjectivity. Of course by its very definition a review will have bias - but there's such thing as objective bias. Also, a lot of reviews aren't really reviews... they're more like just detailed descriptions of the toy (laced with "zOMG! I have this toy!" - i.e.: written by reviewers who are in the 'honeymoon phase' of having a new toy and thus looking through rose-coloured lenses). If someone thinks that a toy roxxors or suxxors teh big one, then bloody well justify your opinion(s) with reasons! :tmyk

No es bueno.... I was just looking at the Megs v Prime 2-pack and saying to myself, I'll just wait for the voyager. I have to say these problems aren't instilling a lot of confidence. Should I just pass on the voyager and get the 2-pack? I care more about the quality of the figure than I do size, so I won't be grabbing one just because of that.

I don't have the 2-pack but I've got Deluxe Cybertron Prime which uses pretty much the same engineering and it's a pretty good figure. The main problems with the 2-pack Prime seem to be the battle damage and the low chest, but if you can get past those it might be worth picking up.

I'm thinking I might just sell my Voyager Prime and get the Activator version when it comes out. It seems pretty cool and at that small size it's probably going to use balls for most of the joints, which should help with the articulation problems.

exactly. Sean Long, cool as he is, will spend like, 100$ for a deluxe toy 3 months before its release date. And then, during the review, all he talk about is "I love this toy, I'm so glad I got it, it so good, I love this character." and then never mention its design flaws. I've grown not to trust video reviews anymore, they make them (or start them) usually before or right after opening the toy. They need to get a feel of it before saying how damn great/bad it is.

Anyway, I'm sure I can look past/fix all of voyager Prime's design flaws. a review said his waist clicks in and then has slight waist articulation elsewhere. as for the axe, I'm only going to use it for the "trailer" in vehicle mode, and us the show accurate 2-pack prime axe, after which I will sell both toys from it.

I like my Voyager Prime. Sure the axe is really bad, but I am glad he has a gun. The spinning waist thing is kinda fun to me, but I still had to figure out how to use it first.

THE END IS NEAR!!! REPENT REPENT!!

Personally...he's a damn site better than the majority of the crap we've had to choose from since Beast Wars. Seriously..Sorry but there are many more things in this world to be upset about. He is just a toy. Take him back to the store if he's that bad. Granted there is obviously a way to fix the "Rotating above the knee" issue. I'm sure that if you asked nicely someone would share the secret with you.

Sorry...didn't mean to snap like that but it's getting pretty tiresome hearing about how crappy these figures are and how horrible Hasbro is for creating Animated. I'm about exhausted with it as Goki is with crappy biased reviews. Granted I think the negative reviews have been just as biased as the positive reviews. Look at it this way...It's a damn site better than Energon, Armada or Cybertron. Would you rather they go back to that hideous crap? Yeah...transforming bricks! that was fun. The FEW that I do have I got as gifts. I didn't buy a single figure for, how many years were those series on? Well from the series that is...Ebay got a lot of my money back then. Animated is new, fresh and exciting. It's so much more "FUN" to watch than the last 3 series...even RID (Although I did like most figures for RID).

Ok...again I'm sorry for snapping and if I ticked you off...or anybody for that matter...I'm sorry. Guess I'm just being sensitive today.

FTR Energon was a decent line. The Autobots sucked (save Downshift/Wheeljack and Rodimus), but the Decepticons were fantastic.

Cybertron was a great line. A nice mixture of homages and new characters. Great designs. Even Megatron's "Race Car of Doom" looked ok once he got his traditional colour scheme back.

Armada was really the only terrible line of the UT, IMO, and even then it had its bright spots.

Classics was pure :win

I may not like the design aesthetic of Animated, but I can appreciate good figures when I see them. I would say Animated's building on a trend of steadily improving lines, not replacing "crap" as you say.

I just got this figure and I must say I'm hugely disappointed. The vehicle mode is decent aside from the well-documented deficiencies of that half-trailer thingy he's got stuck on him, but the "gravity spin" gimmick makes transforming him a real pain in the ass. It never works properly when you use the switch, forcing you to twist the legs around yourself but there's so much resistance when you start the process that I'm always afraid I'm going to break something. Getting him back into vehicle mode is even more difficult since unless the wait part is lined up perfectly when you start spinning it it's not going to be in the right place at the end of the process.

The whole assembly also means that once you do get the figure transformed the waist is absurdly loose so that the torso spins around whenever you so much as look at it funny. It's like the upper body on Classics Ultimate Battle Optimus Prime except without the ability to lock it into place.

The arms eschew ball joints entirely meaning that they end up with substantially less articulation than Delux Cybertron-mode Prime and they're stuck on these fiddly little shoulder tabs that have absolutely nothing keeping them in place. The face looks decent with the mask up but like utter crap when you fold the mask down, which is annoying because "mask-down" is how Prime spends 99.994% of his time on the cartoon. In exchange for this non-feature you lose any form of poseability in the head other than the ability to look left and right, which causes the big red block underneath the head to also turn meaning that the only position where the head actually looks good is straight ahead.

The ugliness of the axe is also well-known but what's less well-known is the fact that the thing is so heavy that Prime's elbow (which isn't that loose, really) can't hold it up in most positions, again limiting poseability.

I always wondered why some people were at all interested in the Deluxe Ultimate Battle version of this character, since I always thought it looked like crap (and seeing it in person on store shelves hasn't caused me to change that opinion at all) but since it shares many characteristics with the Deluxe Cybertron-mode Prime there's a good chance that the Deluxe version of this character is actually a substantially better-engineered toy than the Voyager version, which really should not be the case.

I have to wholehartedly disagree with all of this. You must have gotten a defective one, you should return it. I just got mine and looked for all of the flaws you found. The waist on mine is just fine, and I have transformed him several times with no problems. When transforming him back into his truck mode I just fold it back, twist it and lock it into place. The articulation is fine, and the arms can fully support the weight of his "axe"....without the cannon attatched to it. That was the only time I ran into problems. Leg articulation is fine, no biggie there. I suppose if you don't like the way the faceplate looks when it's lowered, that's a matter of personal opinion, I can't change that. I personally think it looks fine.

Overall I think this is a fantastic Prime figure. I highly suggest you return the one you have and get another.

EDIT: Okay, the right arm is a little loose in the elbow on mine. The left arm is fine though.
