Biggest Transformers toy flop of 2007?

Recommended Posts

:tdown Sorry to say but I give the entire, and I do mean entire movie line the :tdown it was a flop IMHO, yes I'm a Gen 1er but I do own some Armada and energon, its just thar the movie figures do not look crisp. clean, interesting and they're facial features are indescernable. I was sadly disappointed with it. Plus they look like plastic pieces of Blot. I actually had a Leader class version of a toy that was supposed to be megatron in my hands, tried to transform it. I likened it to putting together a jig saw puzzle where all the pieces are 3 different shades of the same color. Well . . . thats for Masterpiece Starscream hasbro, but GFY walmart for not distributing it widely and evenly so everyone gets one. I still got one but I have the EBAY version. Here's hoping they don't F up classics.

Overall, the TECH line was all sorts of meh-ness and Robot Replicas was all sorts of heart-wrenching disappointment.

On the actual-transforming-figures-side of it though, the biggest TF flop of 2007 was...Payload.

And it DOES have a good paint job and an excellent gimmick. The only truth is the bad robot mode, which the figure was never meant to have anyway. That's like complaining about a Robot Replica figure not being able to transform.

Yes but the Robot Replicas are sold at a cheaper price point! The problem with Scorponok is that he has this robot mode that he never had in the movie and it sold for the same price as a movie Deluxe (which here is about AU$30). Considering that Scorponok sold for the same RRP as 08 Bumblebee, you're getting way less value for money there. Scorponok would be a better toy if they made him cheaper - even if that meant NOT making him transform (who would miss that robot mode??).

Actually, domestically in the US, they have the same recommended retail price, set by Hasbro. Though the prices may be different abroad, that is something that needs to be addressed by the individual regions. So for all intents and purposes, they are the same price.

This is just my opinion, but the Movie line as a whole was a general disappointment to me, so I'd have to say that I think it was the biggest Transformers toy flop of 2007.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the movie line.

I'm going to have to side with Stormtrooper on this one. I wanted new toys, and in turn wound up buying most of the movie figures, only to be very sadly disappointed by almost all of them.

'08 Bumblebee. Way to not even come close to living up to the hype. I'm glad I waited and didn't over pay for this thing.

08 Bumblebee is the best of the movie Deluxes IMO and is a darn good toy. But I agree that it's not worth paying above RRP (I seldomly think any toy is worth paying above RRP) :P

Best deluxe, yes, but that really doesn't say much. OMFG toy, sadly this is not. Especially with all the hype that this thing received, it really did wind up in the meh pile (again, with almost all of his movie bot friends), not of it's own demise, but the huge let down that it wound up being. I was able to find one of these very early on, and didn't feel impressed by it at all then, and it never really did grow on me, to storage with him. If it would have taken me longer to get one, and my anticipation was able to continue to grow by leaps and bounds at the passing weeks that I couldn't find one, he would most surely be on this list right now.

Classics Deluxe Megatron is horrible. His tank mode is pretty cool, but his bot mode is missing a hand!! WTF? They could have stuck a plastic fist where that little stub is, but no. That wierd spinning "battle blade" thing is pretty suxx, too.

True, but Ultimate Battle Megatron is the best tank-moded Megatron out there!

G2 Megatron - purple camo splotches on bright green with a brick of a robot mode

G2 Hero Megatron - really nice toy, shame about the colours.

Armada Megatron - tank mode is utterly unrealistic and the robot mode is lacking in articulation

Ultimate Battle Megatron's tank mode looks realistic and aside from lacking a hand, it has a pretty decent robot mode.

Just because they haven't been able to make a decent figure yet, doesn't mean the least cr@ppy one deserves any praise.

Oh, and Goki, I wouldn't buy an MP Thundercracker if it's a repaint of the Skywarp mold. I might buy one if it's an MP "Starscream mold, like I'm fairly certain Hasbro's MP Starscream is.

Umm...

the original MP Starscream mould suffered from being made out of ... not brittle, but not hardy enough plastic. It was the kind of plastic grade that you see on model airplanes but not hardy enough to withstand the rigours of a complex transformation. Fans complained and Takara fixed this problem with MP Skywarp which is made of hardier plastic. Hasbro's MP Starscream also feels like it's made from hardier plastic, so it would seem that Hasbro's MP Starscream was a repaint of the MP Skywarp mould not the original MP Starscream mould. The MP Sky Raider moulds will never been the sturdiest, simply because of the way they were designed, but MP Skywarp and Hasbro MP Starscream do feel more solid to me than Greenscream."

Since when does material = mold? Walscream is made of sturdier material than MP Screamer, but still uses Screamer's mold. Hell, Skywarp still uses Screamer's mold... except for the face. Since Walscream obviously has MP Screamer's face, Occam's Razor dictates it should be a redeco of Screamer, not a redeco and retool of Skywarp.

Personally, I think they should've included Megatron with Starscream, not Optimus. Makes much more sense. Of course, that would be planning too far ahead

Don't forget that Convoy was the very first of the Masterpieces - at the time they hadn't necessarily planned on making more. It's not like Binaltech where they had intended to make it a series of 12 figures from the outset (and later expanded it to more due to the overwhelming popularity of the line).

And it still makes sense for Prime to have the Megatron gun considering that Prime did hold him in "Countdown To Extinction." And MP Convoy's Megatron gun still fits in Starscream's hand anyway, so whatcha complainin' about? icon_wink.gif"

I didn't forget. That's why I added the bit about planning too far ahead. Takara didn't realize they were blowing their wad too early with it.

... and I'm complaining about Starscream not having enough included accessories, compared to the other Masterpieces.

Goki, is it just me or do you notice we seem to bicker a lot?

Hey, is it too late to nominate this one too? WalMart sure thinks it's a winner if it's on clearance THAT deep.

Wow. That's pretty funny.

I just dont get the unleashed, turnarounds, or the Robo-reps...

I konw its been said before - but these had the potential to be really awesome collectibles/actionfigures/representations of the characters.

what we ended up getting were really really half assed.

not even -maybe Quarter-Assed

since this is asking about toy flop i will limit my rant to strictly the toys..

T.e.c.h. is/was a flop - it should've been saved for the next James Bond movie...

robot Replicas, statues, titamium 3 inch, and heroes - will end up causing more harm than good, i think, because parents buy it for their screaming kid and niether know that they're nontransforming and end up with a bad taste in their mouth because of it.

flypaper... is it me or did it just seem like hasbro was throwing transformers out everywhere hoping something would stick

how can you call any of the rest a flop considering it's always sold out....

yeah i'm not in any hurry to get any of the movie figures right now, i've found most of them to be less than satisfying but damn.... how do you say something that keeps selling out is a flop?

Hey, is it too late to nominate this one too? WalMart sure thinks it's a winner if it's on clearance THAT deep.

I got mine for 4 dollars from Goodwill. Some poor sap paid 30 bucks for it once upon a time...

All the 2007 Transformers Movie toys except Leader class Optimus Prime, followed closely by any Optimus Prime repaint toys (i.e. iPod Optimus Prime, Classics Ultra Magnus, etc.)

Wait, what?

Did I just see Slaughtermaster insult every toy that WASN'T an Optimus Prime? Or is one of us misreading?

Back in 2005 I got him to admit Classics Optimus looked good. :tflaugh
