But I digress.

20th Prime is a great Prime figure with a lousy truck mode.

Leader Optimus is fun and unique. They're equal.

There... was no Hasbro Ultra Magnus.

Yes there was. It was a Target exclusive. I passed on it though but I remember seeing at Target and I know lots of other people who picked up on it.

P.S.: some proof in case anyone's thinking that I'm talking out of my beautiful arse...

Hasbro MP Magnus toy review

Quoted from The transformers Wiki

As a Takara product, Masterpiece Ultra Magnus was never released in the US, but was eventually released by Hasbro Australia in 2005 for their market as a Target-exclusive, retaining his Japanese packaging, with simple stickers stating a recommended age of 8+, as well as presenting Hasbro Australia's details and explaining what the product was.
Not to derail the thread, but I'd have to respectfully disagree about the "battle damage" on 20th Prime. Mine appears to have a much lighter and more subtle application than the one shown in that picture. If anything, it brings a lot of depth and character to an otherwise plain and boxy mold, IMO. The shading on the shoulders, forearms, and lower thighs appear more like weathering than damage. Just what you'd expect from an ancient and triumphant leader that has seen many battles over the centuries.

I agree, I would only add that I don't think of the "weathering" as a byproduct of battle but from just driving around. How often do you see a pristine tractor-trailer driving around?

Movie Prime all the way! 20th Prime was hugely overrated IMO - diecast-laden (mine had chipped paint right out of the box), couldn't hold poses under his own weight. And since recent lines have spoiled me with all the cool action features, I didn't feel he had anywhere near enough bang for the buck. The robot mode was very good, but the truck mode suffered horribly for it. Maybe if he had Peter Cullen sound clips instead of the Matrix flashlight in his chest he'd be more worth the money. He has a nice, detailed transformation, and great articulation, but I'm afraid to touch him because of the paint issues. A nice figure, but the por materials choice and terrible truck mode make him not worth the money or the Masterpiece label.

Movie Prime is complex, durable, all-plastic, has some cool features (flip-out gun, horn in truck mode), looks great in both modes. This is the hands-down winner in my book.

for the record, i've dropped mine a few times off a window sill, had him fall over more times than i can imagine thanks to a few cats, and have never had a problem with paint chipping nor with him holding a good pose.

also, i HATE gimmicks. they're transformers and that should be gimmick enough esp for a masterpiece fig. i don't need a gazillion lights, sounds, and flying missiles that end up taking up major space and hampering the transformation or over-all look of the fig.

also, am i the only one that thinks his truck mode does a great job of being a flat-nosed rig?

EDIT

oh, i too like the "battle damage" on 20th prime.

not trying to argue here, but i think gimmicks would ruin mp prime.

I've never had any of these problems with any of my Masterpieces, and for the record, I have MP-01 Convoy, MP-02 Magnus, MP-04 Convoy, 20th Ann Prime, DVD Prime. No paint chipping, no broken legs/feet, and he poses quite well. I've been tempted lately to recreate the Iwo Jima war memorial out of MP Primes, and a Weird Al Flag...woefully, I don't have the room to actually do it right now.

That's interesting about Hasbro Australia releasing Ultra Magnus. I'd have liked that.

Aaaaanyway, I haven't had problems with paint chipping, but the fact Prime can't hold his own weight in a lot of poses annoys me to death. Plus he can't really hold his own damn gun.

I also wish they spread out Prime's gimmicks. He has a ton in robot mode, and none in truck mode. Incidently, I love his robot mode gimmicks. The visor moving and Maxtrix light are unobtrusive but very fun. His truck mode looks nice to me, just... boring. Without a trailer it doesn't really do much. I do keep Hi-Q in his chest in truck mode, though.

Mine held an awesome pose for 2+ years, then fell inexplicably in the night. The next morning I woke to find him w/o arms or legs. After that his legs would pop off pretty easily. I've since epoxied his legs into their hip sockets. I've had it since 20th came out. There is some wear and chipping... but it's just b/c I don't have a nice case for my TF's. Every so often they end up in a box or at a LAN party. I take good care of my TFs, but I also use them.... however it is that one properly uses a TF.

Altho I understand the Takara version has more QC gripes than the 20th did. And my brother has had no issues with his DVD 20th. Battle damage never bothered me... I thought it nice that Hasbro wanted to add detail to the figure. Besides, apparently it comes off easily w/ a pencil eraser. It's in a post somewhere in these boards... somewhere in the middle...

The only thing I'd consider changing in the future is seeing if I could get long stacks... but the short ones are fine by me. I think after this long, the longer stacks would look weird to me... not to mention then he'd be too tall in truck mode for where I'm storing him.

Yah... I don't know how you can complain about his rig mode. It's pretty obvious that it's spot on, whether you're basing it on the cartoon or reality.

Regarding gimmicks, I think more than enough were in there. The "communicator" panels on his arms, his weapons, the freaking light up matrix, and moving mouthpiece were MORE than enough. And I have to agree again, that transformation is always the only gimmick that is necessary.
