20th Anniversary Optimus or Movie Leader Class Optimus, who da best???

Recommended Posts

I like 20th a lot more. I honestly like the Voyager Prime better than the leader Prime. Leader prime feels bulked up just because he doesn't have a super mode. I do agree with Hunter with the fun factor, but I just display transformers.

I guess I'm part of the the minority when I say I like Movie Leader Prime better. Again, part of it is Fun Factor. Part of it is the fact that I could honestly say that I would rather spend 40 bucks on a toy and have something better to spend the other 60 bucks on. MP is nice if you are super collector who can afford to spend all their money on them. Personally, I can't.

for the record, i've dropped mine a few times off a window sill, had him fall over more times than i can imagine thanks to a few cats, and have never had a problem with paint chipping nor with him holding a good pose.

also, i HATE gimmicks. they're transformers and that should be gimmick enough esp for a masterpiece fig. i don't need a gazillion lights, sounds, and flying missiles that end up taking up major space and hampering the transformation or over-all look of the fig.

also, am i the only one that thinks his truck mode does a great job of being a flat-nosed rig?

EDIT

oh, i too like the "battle damage" on 20th prime.

not trying to argue here, but i think gimmicks would ruin mp prime.

Hey, you're opinion's just as valid as mine. I know I'm in the minority in my disappointment with MP Prime.

Anyway, his truck mode isn't too bad from the front, but from any other angle, he looks like a robot contortionist (which I suppose he is) rather than a truck. His feet & leg detailing and elbow pistons alll ruin the illusion. I'd just like him to be as much of a masterpiece in truck mode as robot, ya know? The working suspension is a very nice touch, though.

And I do seem to have unusually bad luck with my figures with diecast parts. That's why I love all-plastic figures so much.

Gimmicks - well, I used to dislike them, but Hasbro/Takara have gotten better with integrating them IMO. I loved the "all Autobots combine" gimmick of Energon. And I love how the locked gimmicks (Minicon & Cyber Key-based) can make losing missiles a lot more difficult. Gimmicks intelligently applied add a lot of play value to a figure, I think. Bad ones, on the other hand, can make a figure worthless (I'm looking at you, TM2 Megatron! And you, Supreme Cheetor!) Even the back-to-basics Classics line had some gimmicks - working missile launchers, Prime's transforming multimode weapons, Jetfire's armor & helmet. (And by the way, if Hasbro upscaled the Classic Prime mold & sold it as MP Prime II, I'd buy it in a second, unless they ruined it with metal.)

Oh, and MP Prime should have come with a driver figure of Peter Cullen. :-)

Gimmicks in toys are fine so long as they don't overwhelm the toy - and in the case of Transformers, so long as the gimmick is built around the Transformer, and not vice versa (i.e.: Transformer action figure first, gimmicks second).

MP Prime is a good example of this. All his funky gimmicks like the arm panels, suspension, moving mouthplate, light up matrix etc are really nice, but they're bonus extras - the toy is first and foremost a Transformer action figure and the gimmicks merely compliment it.

Ultimate Bumblebee is an example of a bad gimmicked figure. The entire toy is built around the gimmicks and consequently the toy really sucks as a Transformer action figure. This was also one reason why a lot of Armada Transformers copped a lot of flak from fans because a lot of them were built around gimmicks that overwhelmed the toy and were thus considered to be poor Transformers action figures - e.g.: Armada Scavenger.

MP Prime and Movie Leader Prime are both Transformers which aren't overwhelmed by their gimmicks. Leader moofie Prime has LED and automorphing but these gimmicks don't overwhelm the toy. At the end of the day, Masterpiece Prime and movie leader Prime are both jolly good Transformer action figures regardless of their gimmicks. The gimmicks are merely the icing on the cake, but not the actual cake itself.

Toys like Armada Scavenger and Ultimate Bumblebee are like - would you like some cake with your icing? Bleeccchhh!

20th Prime is the only toy I own that I display in-box, simply because when I displayed him out-of-box, he fell over multiple times. (And always in the middle of the night.) That has really soured my opinion of him.

Movie Prime is such a fun toy that I'm honestly glad it didn't exist in the eighties. When I was a kid, the coolest toys were always the ones I beat the hell out of. Metroplex? Trashed. Jetfire? Scrap metal. Scorponok? A headless, weaponless husk. If I'd had Movie Prime back then, today I reckon he'd be in about a hundred pieces.

oh, i'd also like to go on record saying that i love the hell out of my movie leader prime too... i just think that as a collectors toy mp prime takes the cake. however i must say i am a g1 fanboy so that tends to give me more lean toward 20th op.

KFGatri, i too have the original 20th prime, and i gotta tell you, do invest in those long stacks. you would think that they'd look out of place, but they don't, they look LOADS better than the short ones. the best part is that the swap is very easy to do, so if you keep the short ones you can put them back in for storage or what have you.

The best thing to do would be for everyone to own BOTH Primes! :D
