Regardless if whether or not mass shifting could be worked into the movie universe (and it would suck if it was), the fact is that it won't. If Bay and Co. were ok with mass shifting Soundwave would have been in the first film, and Megatron would have turned into a handgun for SS to shoot. Bay wants nothing to do with mass shifting, and that's that.

With that in mind, Soundwave would have to be a vehicle.

That was my favorite until someone mentioned those trucks with the big sound-systems, while I think whomever posted that meant those big commercial ones you'd see at a street fair or something - I immediately thought of one of those custom pick-ups where the entire truck-bed is a huge speaker box. That sort of an alt mode provides a pretty "boxy"-looking thing that could work well for Soundwave.

I like to idea of Soundwave being an aerial TF best. I feel it suits his sneeky, blackmaily personality. Aerial TFs general have the upper hand on land based robots, and Soundwave should be a major foe, not just his commanders lacky. He should be powerfull and dangerous, with the Autobots saying "oh ballbags" etc when they see him.

Yeah but to make it seem Not Magical to the audience you have to get all that information INTO the movie.

You realize that's more words than the combined Decepticon dialog in the first movie, including subtitles? They should spend a meaningful chunk of Con screentime and dialog explaining 3 seconds of useless fanwankery that only half the fans even want? Instead of just letting him turn into a vehicle?

 

In terms of animation costs, I would probably be cheaper to fly Bay around the country to jerk off ever TF fan in person, than to animate that boring 25 seconds of exposition.

I'm with Gasket. I don't want to hate Soundwave, but I'm starting to.

IMHO, I see Soundwave as an undercover surveillance van, nondescript on the outside but full of monitoring and recording equipment on the inside. I also think he would pair well with Barricade in this mode.

Betch'cha Tramp won't. Last time it was suggested, he hated it because Soundwave wasn't "putting 100% of his processing into communications only". Because having wheels means Soundwave can't do his job.

 

Nevermind that Frenzy showed that these bots were pretty damn effective at multi-tasking with computer interfaces.

I have been thinking about, and with the news about the movie coming out on HD DVD, i think i got it. how about make Soundwave a Bluray player, that way we could have Blaster in it as an HD DVD player and they could battle it out, in High Definition! Transformers 2: Format Wars "Two Formats, One Winner"
