Die hard fans will only act like they'll never accept him until the movie is finally released, and everyone sees how cool he is, and then everyone will love it, just like with the first movie. Hell, even Atmo mostly came around to Movie Starscream.

I thought the overall reaction to this first film would open Transfans' eyes to the idea of change, and make the sequels immune to this sort of argument, but I can see that at least half this fandom is destined to never learn from its own mistakes.

Forget Cassetes, Monotone, and ass kissing. I think what makes soundwave is his supporting cast. Ravage, Lazerbeak, and Rumble.

I'd like it if he had a faceplate though. Incedently, the radio talk that I thought was a half-assed reason to not write dialog, would have been a great SW gimmick.

He should talk kinda like HK-47.

Interogative: Why is the Meatbag shaking the camera? Ravage: Eject. Mission: cinematography.

My best friend's fiancee and her brother are both kind stuck on G1. So I have real life experience dealing with a purist. And for some reason it made me feel a little dirty.

It's the purists that drive me nuts. I'm all eager to see the Dinobots in the sequel as dinosaurs, but it's not mandatory. They could be vehicles with robots modes that have dinosaur like features (yes, I'm agreeing with whoever it was who said that).

The same goes for Soundwave. I don't want him as a tape deck by all means, but make him have an alternate mode that has some basis for his audio based name. But as far as mass shifting in concerned, it's 50/50. It doesn't have to be in the movie. Cool if it is, not a tragedy if it isn't.

And that brings me to another point. Yes, I know it's supposed to be real world, but don't forget, they're aliens. So to them, mass shifting could be a very simple or complex but an accomplishable thing that is only known to a select few Transformers. Better yet, if Shockwave is in the film, they can borrow from DW. He could have done experiments with Transformers to try and make some that have the ability to change their overall mass at will. Only one survived his experiments. Decepticon Communications Officer, Soundwave, and his espionage group, who were also subject to these experiments, but only a small amount survived (enter Rumble, Ravage and Laserbeak).

And that's all well and good.

The problem only arises when one considers how many more strategic and effective ways there would be to use Mass Shifting other than "turn into a radio".

Take lightsabers: it's not that the audience can't buy the concept. But mass shifting for a radio mode is like asking the audience to accept that the Jedi only use these light weight, never-needs-sharpening blades for mincing garlic while they carry steak knives into battle.

Hobbes, I love you. Were it phisiologicaly possible, I would want to have your babies.

I'm not saying he should turn into a radio. I'm saying this is how they could work in mass shifting with logical sense and not make it seem magical.

Yeah but to make it seem Not Magical to the audience you have to get all that information INTO the movie.

Shockwave-

"You see not all decepticons have the ability to alter their size. Soundwave was the only survivor of a series of experiments I preformed in the altering of molecular density. Soundwave can shift some of his mass into a pocket dimension of my creation and retrieve it when he wishes to return to normal size. The ability has also transfered to his minions"

You realize that's more words than the combined Decepticon dialog in the first movie, including subtitles? They should spend a meaningful chunk of Con screentime and dialog explaining 3 seconds of useless fanwankery that only half the fans even want? Instead of just letting him turn into a vehicle?

In terms of animation costs, I would probably be cheaper to fly Bay around the country to jerk off ever TF fan in person, than to animate that boring 25 seconds of exposition.

How bout he just "dumps" the mass he needs to Transform, and that becomes the tapescons :D Well, obviously, in a serious way... But you know, parts of him transform, others detach to become the new tapes etc... ?

No, I know. But the major problem with using mass shifting technology just to turn into a radio (especially when bots like Frenzy already exist) is the wasting of a very useful technology on something so trivial and silly...which is a whole other logical jump for the audience.

I believe mass shifting, when properly used by the Transformers to its fullest extent, would result in a robot with unlimited alt. modes. Since this end result would probably make the Transformer-in-question's transformation look like something out of Beast Machines, and would render the notion of a single alt. mode obsolete, turning Transformers into Shape Shifters capable of mimicking anything, I think it's best to chuck the concept entirely.

I was about to raise this point. Well said.
