See to me, you can't bring in 8 new Autobots. You can't do it and get a lot of good character development for the new ones plus keep the older characters in the limelight (and Prime and Bumblebee will be in the limelight). So you have to decide: Is it worth just bringing in just the Dinobots?? or Grimlock by himself with other Autobots like Prowl, Wheeljack, and/or The Autobot Twins?? You can't have both and have it actually work worth a damn. For me I'd rather just get Grimlock (for now) as the ultimate war-ready Autobot and throw in Prowl and the Twins (or Wheeljack and Mirage).

I love the Dinobots as much as the next guy, hell Snarl and Grimlock are two of my top-10 Favorite Autobots period, but you just have to decide what's worth it. I'd rather get several other fan-favs that make up a well-diverse group of new 'bots than a group of war-built SOBs. Even if you have Devastator or Bruticus, doesn't mean you have to have a team of 5 Dinobots to battle him. I would like to see Prowl coming up with a strategy to fight Devastator using the other Autobots with Grimlock, Prime, and Ironhide as the big guns, Bumblebee and Mirage as diversions, and Wheeljack designing a way to break down Devastator, all while Ratchet runs collateral damage control. To me that would be just as cool as any giant Dinobots vs Devy blow 'em up visual festival.

Thinks for a moment.

NAHHH!

Gimme my Dinobots. Gimme gimme gimme.

Right on RR. But, the only thing is, which would look better. BW type Dinobots, or G1 type Dinobots. If we have the G1 named Dinobots but with BW alt modes, we'll have idiots like that guy on youtube who dressed up as a Jedi and complained about the look of the characters saying that they're not G1 enough and that it was stated by Spielberg himself that the movie was supposed to be a live action G1 movie with G1 characters for the G1 fans (which we all know is not the case).

But if we have the G1 named Dinobots in robotic Dinosaur alternate modes, how would that look too (IMO wouldn't look too bad).

But I'm open to either.

My only request is that they don't use any wierd dinosaurs like pachycephalosaurus (the hard-head) or the dimetrodon. Just stick with the T-Rex/Triceratops/Brontosaurus (Apatasaurus, whichever floats your boat on naming)/Stegosaurus/Pteranodon set and you'll be fine and probably won't hear too many complaints from the fans.

True... and I'd be open to Robotic Dinosaur idea if they weren't complete G1 designs. A T-rex that looks like a T-rex metal skeleton with circuitry and robots inside.

I'd suggest that they have a holographic image of a real dinosaur, with the metallic build underneath. The holographic image could deactivate, showing the real skeleton within. And they cold transform!

But, why would they need to use that. Dinosaurs walking around in modern times - I mean, they don't need to look like real organic dino-beasts, since dinos don't exist now. There just is no reason for them to use the holograms to "hide" their robotic forms. Just saying is all.

...Why would you have robotic dinosaurs walking around?

I had a thought while at work actually tonight.

Why not do them in the style of the Dinozaurs if anybody remembers those toys.

For those who don't. They were essentially an entire line of dinosaur based transformers.

The cartoon that was with it wasn't too bad (I really liked it).

The good guys were all dinosaurs. They're colors were split like so. They kind of hid in a musem as dinosaur skeletons, but when they were needed by the children they guarded, the skeletons were one color, while the rest of thier bodies (like the "skin") was a different colors. So the leader which was of course a T-Rex, when called into action had a silver skeleton while everything else was red. The Triceratops was a blue skeleton with a green/neon green filling.

As for the holographic idea, sounds to me like someone wants Pretenders in the next film.

Exactly. Hence the issue of having robotic dinosaurs in the movies period. Which is why this thread was started - do you go with cool dinosaurs or make them cool military-based? Which works better in the context of the new movie universe? Just posing some questions.

Or maybe I'm not following right.

If the Dinobots were just large vehicles of some sort, what is the point of even using those characters?

I think the original three Dinobots should be used, Grimlock, Slag and Sludge. They would be a heavy fighting unit from Cybertron. Their dinosaur modes should be a result of the three choosing them. That's all. The technology prevents them from making actual skin, and there are no live dinosaurs for them to reference anyway. Thus, they become mechanical dinosaurs, in the movie style of Transformers. They come to Earth to help fight Devastator who has been held in reserve by Megatron. The Constructicons would be exactly as they are in G1, since construction equipment is a very common sight. Of course it will be easier to come up with something more accurate once I have seen the movie.

If the Dinobots were just large vehicles of some sort, what is the point of even using those characters?

I think Grimlock's got a unique and strong enough character that he can bring something to the story beyond just being the dinosaur guy.

The other four are probably redundant and not gonna add much, though.

As I see how Grimlock could be used specifically (the following may include possible spoilers, although it is all based on my assumptions about the movie's plot):

It would appear that in this film there will probably exist some human distrust of all Transformers, Autobot or Decepticon. Probably particularly from a military point of view. The Autobots will, however, win over some of the distrusting humans by saving the world.

The introduction of Grimlock in the sequel as a tough, battle loving Autobot could strain this trust and make life difficult for the Autobots. Because, unlike Ironhide and the other 'Bots, Grimlock can't necessarily be kept in line by Prime. Grimlock will do what he needs to do to win, and if that means some human deaths...so be it.

And that creates conflict that comes from character and that helps a story have depth. How the Autobots and the humans deal with that "betrayed trust" is ripe with story potential. Particularly if the 'Cons are bringing some sort of combiner or enhanced Triple Changing soldiers to the fight that the Autobots can't handle without the conflict causing Grimlock.

There's not really another Autobot who is as well known and who could come in and create that sort of conflict...and none of that conflict requires Grimmy to be a dinosaur.

But it's boring though. They might as well come up with a different character altogether, like they did with Blackout and Barricade.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I think the best Transformer characters are more than what they turn into.

I agree so friggin' much.

As a big fan of TF Comics, Grimlock is more than a T-Rex or even a part of the Dinobots. He is one of the best conflicted characters, IMO. So much about Grimlock just lends him to being one of the best choices as a new Autobot for the next movie.
