Main thing I can't stand: racists. :)

It has nothing to do with racism :roll :tflaugh

However, it apparently has everything to do with nationality. :tfhuh

There isn't a word for someone who has prejudice on the basis of nationality, so: racist. :) Well, you could say 'nationalist' I suppose, but that would imply something completely different.

It has nothing to do with Race. You can't call someone a Racist when it's not RACE they are talking about. Just because you have no word for it doesn't mean you can use the wrong one in it's place.

Whichever word I used, it doesn't change the fact that you're an idiot, does it? Perhaps you ought to judge me on my personality rather than my place of birth. Wheelie.

Main thing I can't stand: Stupid Powerglideing retards who are racist (or whatever the f-u-c-k you wanna call it) for no apparent reason.

I could be like you and say "oooh I hate those Powerglideing americans because they complain all the time even though they have the best selection of tfs and the best prices " But I don't because you can't lump everyone together. I could say its americas dumbass youth who creates a need for projectile laws.

You may not like or understand the laws that prevent toy manufacturers in this country from releasing unsafe products, but please don't let your frustration lead you to stereotype and judge parents, many of whom are doing the best they can. Come back when you've got kids of your own and then we'll talk.

you're right i don't have kids of my own. but i'll tell you what i do have. 2 nephews i've raised like a father. there is a 4 1/2 year age difference between them. i can say there was no way in hell that the younger one would have ever gotten as far as getting into any closet. there is a pretty easy thing we did called childproofing the home. the smaller kid couldn't get to any part of the house we didn't want him to get to. plus it's not that hard to do a scan of a room that you're about to let the little one play in to clear away any toys or bits they shouldn't play with. i've done it thousands of times. so don't tell me it can't be done!

putting that aside, what if your little one cuts himself on a knife, do we ban sharp knives? what if he chokes on a wire or band that keeps a loaf of bread closed? what if he finds something small in moms purse and swallows that? what if he's outside and tries to swallow a small rock? what about toothpaste caps? the point is there are sooo many dangers that no safety standards can help.

if you're letting the child get into closets and other areas he/she shouldn't be in then those standards don't mean a thing because if it's not a marble from hungry hippos then it will surely be something else. there is only one fool proof safety standard in the world that can guarantee a childs safety, and thats parents, period!

believe me i know, i've been there and done it!

Uh, thanks for the ignorant rant. I'm glad you're here to teach me Parenting 101. My son broke his foot once, just because he randomly tripped over himself. Was that my fault too? Accidents happen sometimes, no matter what you do, so don't come to me with this crap about childproofing the house and picking up toys, like I'm some frickin' moron. :roll

don't go getting overboard here. you're 100% right, accidents happen. certain things are beyond anyones control.

however keeping small children away from things they can choke on IS something that is VERY preventable. the problem with safety standards (in toys) is they give a false sense of security to parents. that creates a whole new problem rather than solving the old ones. parents rely too much on safety standards while the same problems that caused them to exist in the first place still happen! thats the point i'm trying to make. and there have been studies that show this to be true.

all the safety standards in the world won't keep kids from choking on small items they shouldn't be putting in their mouths, toys or otherwise...only parents can prevent that!

so please don't put words into my mouth! we're talking about safety standards and kids choking on things they shouldn't be putting in their mouths or hurting themselves with, not kids tripping over their own feet!

though some parents would probably sue the shoe company because it was the kids shoe coming untied that caused them to fall.

Blot happens!

Very true. Even so, I still think we need safety standards. Though really, we're both generalizing here. After all, I don't think either of us would argue that two-year-old kids should have toys marketed to them with itty bitty pieces that they can choke on. The issues in this thread seem to be the infamous "drop test" and the whole toy gun law. My kids aren't real big toy droppers, but then again it's nice to know that if they ever did drop a toy off the balcony or something, it wouldn't shatter into a million plastic blades of death. I think the idea behind that is, "is this toy potentially something that would be unsafe to market to children in the age range specified on the box?" And if it becomes a hazard when it's dropped, the answer (sadly) would be yes. But I'm not too bothered about the gun law, b/c a) I don't want any more kids getting shot by cops, and b) I never liked G1 Megatron anyway. Bleah. Lame toy. Lame character. Shockwave should have taken over Cybertron when Megatron left. But I digress...

P.S. Sorry about the knee-jerk reaction there; I just get defensive when it comes to my kids and stuff.

P.P.S. Does anyone ever think about blaming the toy manufacturers for producing such cheap crap in the first place? :wtf
