I only bought 3 of the BW 10th figures. So does that mean my 3/6 Transmutate figure is 3 figures? 1 figure? Does he count as a Gestalt?

an accessory? or maybe a minicon?

I dont want to harp on Goki's Poll or anythig - but this isnt the first time he has tried to tell the fandom which TFs count and which dont.

remember - if someone else picks CL-Grimlock as their TFOTD you cant. You are not allowed to enjoy Grimlock! not with out Goki's permission.

I think its the false aire of authority that Goki assumes that creates the hostile backlash.

I personally don't think that Goki is trying to "tell" anyone what to do. He is simply stating that for purposes of this particular poll, we are using the results from his previous counting polls. The only problem is that those results came from voting by the people that actually gave a Blot how the results turned out. Just like w/ elections here in the US, only the small minority that actually cared actually voted, so it isn't exactly representative of the entire fandom (just like it unfortunately isn't representative of the entire nation w/ the election), but it is something. I would say cut the guy a break, he is only trying to get a count from people. He isn't exactly telling out how to run your lives or anything. I think he means well, and his responses to this topic have been very cordial.

and BTW Goki, who says the opinion of the majority of voters is authoritative? What if I openly defy this system? Am I going to be thrown into TF jail or something? Barred from trading in the End Cap? Spat upon as I walk in the street?

Why are you doing this Pete? I, and others, have already explained what the purpose of this system is. Fine, you strongly disagree with this system and this survey - you've made your point. What exactly are you intending to further achieve by continually attacking it?

I just think it's completely Outback-retentive and laughably obsessive to say "not everything sold under the Transformers brand actually counts as a Transformer". This absolutely would not happen for any other property. Anything sold as a Star Wars toy would count. Anything sold as a Lord of the Rings toy would count. And so on.

I could easily imagine it happening with other properties.

1/ Star Wars: do Pez dispensers count? What about gaming miniatures, if so, which brand? Do model kits count? Do Star Wars Legos count as Star Wars toys? When it comes to toylines with variants, Star Wars takes the cake - do you count all variants (e.g.: PotF Boba Fett with a full circle on the back of his hand vs PotF Boba Fett with a semi-circle on the back of his hand)? Do knock-offs count? I think most hard core SW collectors would dismiss knock-offs. Do they count happy meal toys? What about non action-figure toys, like the light sabres, costumes, helmets, guns etc.?

2/ Lord of the Rings: Do the cheaper repackaged ToyBiz figures count separately? Do you count the pre-ToyBiz LotR toys from the 70s? What about the Ring which comes with Frodo -- it's 1:1 scale, so it cannot be used as an accessory for other action figures (it's meant for kids to wear)... yet the Ring is clearly a separate - and very important - character in the story. It's marketed as a piece of merchandise that happens to come with the toy. Does it count separately?

Classification is arbitrary by it's very nature -- even certain forms of scientific classification are arbitrary in nature, e.g.: biological classification, planets etc.

I'm telling people how to count for the purposes of the survey! Not for how you want to count in your personal lives. Why is this so hard to understand?

That's utterly untrue, and you know it.

I only recommended to people that we don't repeat nominations in the TFotD thread to make the thread more interesting by including more different and varying other Transformers. Otherwise we'd just have endless nominations for Grimlock and Jetfire all the time and other TFs like Hubcap would never see the limelight.

^teh flamebait. If you have some personal issue with me, take it up with me in PM. I've never attacked someone's character on a public post before, and I would expect to be treated the same way (whatever happened to our discussions of pluralistic morality?).

I think my issue is what Hunter alluded to before; you're not an authority figure and it seems like you're acting as though you were one. But whatever; I've already added my count anyway.

I meant toys specifically, not associated merchandise. PEZ dispensers are sold as PEZ dispensers, no matter what face is on them. I don't think there would be a lot of confusion if you asked a SW or LotR collector how many action figures he had. That's what we're really talking about here, anyway.

It's highly unfair of you to throw unbased accusations at me. I've never claimed to be an authority on this issue. I have opinion on how I think TF toys should be counted, just as you have your own opinion on how you think TFs should be counted. Our opinions may vary, but they're just as valid as each other.

Due to the arbitrary nature of TF classification - as you can see, everyone has their own opinion on how they think TFs should be counted. The best way I could think of to create a common consensus was to hold a series of polls to give the opportunity to create a system based on the opinions of the majority of collectors. Now I can't force everyone to vote, so naturally it can only be based on the opinons of the majority of collectors who voted. This is the fairest system I could think of creating. A system made by fans for fans.

I'm merely trying to conduct a survey and in doing so, needed to formulate a series of rules for people to abide by in order to participate in my survey. This is the fairest system I could think of creating. If you can think of a fairer system then go ahead and make it.

!IMPORTANT! Read The Following Before Using This Poll!

Use the following system to count your Transformers and round them to the nearest hundred. e.g.: 278 and 326 both round out to 300.

THE UNIVERSAL SYSTEM Rules For Counting Your Transformers For This Poll

As you can see, I stated twice that this system was for this poll's use. Where does it say that it's meant for anything other than that?

And let me just point out again, this is not my system. My system is quite different and was the system used for the 2005 survey. This system is based on the results of polls I ran during 2006 and what the majority of voters perceived as the most favourable method of classification and counting.

Now let's get this thread back on topic and get on with the job of counting Transformers!

I got close to 350 now. I wanna count all my Mega SCFs and Myclones and Knockoffs (which would bring me closer to 450) but it's cool, it's cool. :tflaugh I think a Universal System for counting Transformers is a good thing. Goki's not trying to piss on anyone's parade...he put a lot of work into this so that we can all give a figure that means something, IMO.

BTW, high counts don't mean Blot to me...it may impress the noobs, but it's G1 and rare Japanese stuff that really impresses me...QUALITY OVER QUANTITY! My Jafcon Convoy counts just the same as any Mini-con under this poll...just sayin! :tftongue
