Dont forget the other aspect of these figures that people seem to love:

NO GIMMICKS!!

Again I think that this is a sign of the age level of the people buying the figures.

Would a 7 year old prefer a toy with a springloaded head or not? I dont know.

There is nothing inherently wrong with any of the Gimmicks from the A/E/C lines. However when the Gimmick mechanism interferes with other attributes of the figure, then perhaps it does more harm than good.

But again we go back to - would the 7yo value those same attributes as the 30 y.o collector.

So again, age and nostalgia, indirectly affect that judgement as well.

The only reason I'm collecting the Classics is nostalgia. All I've ever wanted was a G1 Redux line since getting back into the fandom, and voilà!

I have no problem with this.

Regarding the gimmicks: all I can say about that is what my (now eight-year-old) son thought of them. He absolutely loves minicons. Loves loves loves. They're his favorite thing to play with TF-wise because he likes to build armies and have battles and stuff. As far as using them as add-ons for the regular TFs.... eh he doesn't really care about that. It's the same with the cyber planet keys. He loves the extra features but I think it frustrates him that he can't activate them without this extra piece that always goes missing. Maybe a simple "button" would be more fun...? Oh and he also loved the powerlinxing Autobots in Energon because they were easy combiners without a bunch of pieces to lose (have we learned nothing since the 80's, Hasbro?).

So that's what I got.

MHO, Landmine is a lame mould with serious forearm kibble in bot mode.

And Astrotrain doesn't? ;p

Anyway, the point is that I don't think that either Classics or Cybertron is inherently better than the other... you have all these people going, "zOMG! Classics is the best line of TFs ever r0X0Rz'd!!11!11!`1!" when fundamentally speaking, I don't see how they're inherently superior to any other relatively recent TF line - e.g.: Cybertron/GF, Alternators/BT(BTA, KISS), MP etc.

As Hunter pointed out, a lot of the appeal in this line seems to be coming from G1 nostalgia.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think that it is obscuring a lot of people's judgement when reviewing these toys - particularly in comparison with other TF lines. I just feel that raising the Classics on this ivory pedestal and declaring them to be superior to other current lines is just gross over-exaggeration.

Yes okay, you have new versions of classic G1 characters from the 80s. FTW and all that... and hey, these toys are just as neat as most Cybertron figures. Backslash-forwardslash-backslash-forwardslash-zero-zero-seven!!one!oneone!!

But when you measure Classics up against say Cybertron and compare their inherent qualities as toys without the bias of G1-nostalgia, I don't think that Classics really isn't as super-fantastic as what everyone is making them out to be.

Yes, they're really good... but they're not that good.

I haven't seen this much fan-fappage since late 2003 with BT-01 Smokescreen. d:

why they are great: The transformers Classic line is the line that the 80's generation has been waiting to be made since the days we realized that it was okay to still like toys. Those are the characters that captured our imagination and ran with it all the way through 1987. When we talk about the toy line being better, what we mean is that the characters are better. I don't know anyone here that, as an adult, can really watch A/E/C and pretend that it effects them like the 80's cartoon did when we were kids. It just isn't possible because our brains work so differently now. But we remember what it felt like to get home from school and race to watch Transformers, and we remember those awesome christmas mornings opening up a Jazz or Powermaster Optimus Prime to our hearts' delight.

It's those feelings that prompt us to say that this line is superior to any previous, because it's superior to US, to our nostalgia, for letting us remember what it was like to be a kid in 1984. Nothing in A/E/C or even Beast Wars, as great a show as it was, can reproduce that in the way that this toy line has.

:tfsad you made me get all misty there for a second

:tflaugh Beastbox

Actually that was never my experience with Transformers, since I was older. The whole time I was watching the show and buying the toys I felt like I was too old to be, well, watching cartoons and playing with toys. But my parents were okay with it (barely). My pure childhood happiness toy times really come from Star Wars/ESB toys.

Very well written :thumb Only thing I dont agree with is the Beast Wars part. Once season 2 came out and I got the Video tape with Rattrap, I did every thing in my power to catch every episode. Nah! I have to fully agree with you. I say this because the climax of season 2 made me even more rabid to see season 3. The strength of the G1 related conclusion made me an even bigger fan of the show. When Ravage showed up I was like whoa! I cant believe he's on here. Then when they showed Megatron on the disc and Ravage Transformed g1 sound and all.....My hair stood on end and I got goosebumps. When They put the Ark on the show/Megs went inside/he actually shot Optimus Prime in the head.....I thought I died and went to heaven. So your right in the minds of kids who grew up on TF, Nothing can beat those characters.

To me, the "holy crap" moment was when Silverbolt and Blackarachnia discovered the Ark.

Still though, I actually found the pre-G1-tie-in Vok storyline more interesting overall. While it was cool to see them tie BW in to G1, it also limited what they could do with the story. So I'm a bit torn about just how good that was for the show.

But in the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit that I totally did one of these --> :eek2 in Beast Machines when they showed Vector Sigma at the core of the Oracle.

I missed that ep. I missed so many of them because of their wacky schedule.
