how did everyone come to the conclusion that the gorrila jet thing is starscream?

There was a concept picture posted about three months ago that looked just like that guy - it was labeled "STARSCREAM."

That, and the movie cast-list:

Autobots: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Ratchet, Ironhide

Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream, Brawl, Barricade, Scorponok, Frenzy, Blackout

Scorponok and Blackout have already been revealed. Barricade is the crooked cop car, Frenzy's supposed to be a smaller infiltrator/spy. Brawl is a rough-and-tough thug, which, despite the jet's 'bot mode, is probably not conducive to a heavy-hitter, due to the relative flimsiness of a fighter jet, plus the further description of him said "this is the closest thing to a Constructicon you're going to get", so he's probably a piece of heavy machinery of somesort. And Megatron is most likely that modified tank we saw set photos of a few months ago. Process of elimination.

HEY!

You, there? At the computer screen? You are visiting a website devoted to toys. Also, look around you. See all those Transformers there? Yes, those, you know where they are. Even though you are all grown up you still collect CHILDREN'S TOYS. That's right, I mean you.

YOU are a FANBOY. We are ALL FANBOYS here. Please don't use the term in a derogatory way. 99% of the adult public would consider our hobby odd at best. You are a fanboy, too, or you wouldn't have been watching for and discussing these changes at length. So get over the whole fanboy namecalling. (Insert witty comment about pot and kettle here.)

Some of us like the new movie models, some of us do not. That's OK. Some like Beast Wars, some do not. Some like Armada, others hate it. But we all still love Transformers. We all really do have more in common than not.

Having said all that:

Blackout looks the best of the new molds. Starscream looks like a design that is odd merely for oddness' sake. The wierd legs, no hands, and chipmunk face are just a bit much for me to take all at once. Prime, Bumblebee, well, they look like confetti all glued together into a robotic shape.

One thing most all TFs have had throughout the years are humanoid robot forms that show parts of what they are in alt mode. Look at G1 Prime, BW Megatron, heck, even Primus. You can pretty much tell what they are even when in robot mode. The movie designs lack this, and in my opinion, seem less like TFs than they should.

Missed one: Bonecruncher, who is the one who is 'closest thing to a Constructicon'

Brawl is said to be the mean looking Tank. Megs, is rumors to his alt mode.

is always ready for battle and is a “heavy lifter. Mr. Orci commented that during their writings of characters, they were using other iterations of the Transformers franchise as well and hoping to continue that into the other movies, if available.

Next is Bonecrusher. Not much information was given for him, but they said he is the closest to a Constructicon. He is also subservient and only responds to Megatron’s orders.

Best comments I have seen so far.

I think it was posted on this site a while back that Megatron's alt mode was an "alien stealth jet." Basically, I'm guessing he keeps his "Cybertronian" form.

I don't like "Starscream" because NOTHING about that toy has anything to do with the original character. It's not about making everything super-G1-ish, it's about preserving what makes a character who he is. The body is too bulky. The arms are freakin' HUGE. The legs? Don't get me started. And that head! It's absolutely HIDEOUS!!! It looks like whatever giant robot chose this form watched Star Wars too damn many times and bought himself a giant Darth Vader Voice-Changer mask! Yeah, they can write him like Starscream, they can make his voice similar, and make him a back-stabbing bastard, but that doesn't make him Starscream.

And before people jump on the "STFU G1 Fanboy" bandwagon, ask yourself: If your favorite live-action TV show or movie franchise suddenly lost one of its stars due to contract issues, death, whatever, and tried to replace that star with another actor--and tried to pass him off as the exact same character--you'd probably be pretty pissed. Would you like it if Lucas made "Star Wars Ep. 7" and cast Caspar van Dein (however you spell his name) as Han Solo? Would you accept Sarah Gilbert from Roseanne as Princess Leia? How many Stargate SG-1 fans are still Starscreaming because Richard Dean Anderson left the show, and they replaced him with a new character played by Ben Browder from Farscape? It's the same thing for me. I don't need them to be "men in suits". I just want them to be recognizable as the characters that got me into this whole mess of a hobby to begin with. Or, just make him someone else. Don't call him Starscream because that's not who he is.

Here, here!!! Someone who "gets" it.

that would be a logical argument, but there are more than just athetics to consider.

color scheme, head sculpt, what ever. what makes the character is the character. it's his attitude, mannerisms. if screamer tries to undermine megatron in the movie, then what? thats very screamer.

I'm sorry they didn't consult you on the only correct way to make starscream. maybe you'll get a call for the sequel, and we'll get a movie thats nothing but a G1 fanboys wet dream. and no one is trying to pass these guys off as "the exact same character." this is not G1. it's not Armada. It's a new movie, with new versions of characters.

So what? Transformers, in general, has always had nice looking robot modes. Even Beast Machines had nice looking designs. The endoskeletons that they are using for the movie are not like anything that's ever been done. The way these movie Transformers look is exactly what I feared they would look like.

i think the problem is that the general movie audience expects their robots to look functional. this usually results in the designers stripping down the robot so the viewers can actually see the mechanisms working. i also think that this additude is the result of exposure to cheesy sci-fi robots that look like a bunch of empty containers connected to eachother by tubes and pipes. for example Bender from Futuramma. he's basicly an empty metal cylender with ventilation tubing for limbs and all of his electronics are stored in his head. he doesn't look like a functional robot at all. because of decades of exposure to bad designs like Bender's, the general audience assumes that any blocky, solid part on a robot is just a hollow metal container without any inner mechanisms.

HEY!

Well said (in general), although I'd say that this is not a website devoted to toys, but Transformers.

There's numerous shows, comic, and products based on those, and plenty of people are here for that too.
