Continuity has never been a strong point in the G1 cartoon. If you want consistency in your G1 canon, go read the Marvel Comics. :)

Meh, Continuity goes completely out the window after the first three eps of Transformers. :roll I actually remember last time I watched it, What the hell, Optimus prime/Ironhide don't fly. For that matter I remember Megatron never using his laser eyes again afterwards either. My belief is the whole MTMTE 3 parter was a first time promo and became a episodic cartoon later on. Personally above all I accept it for what it is, and leave it at that.

 

What does bug me however is that Prime, and megatron never once used there energon weapons again. That who sequence IMO was the coolest thing in all of MTMTE and the writers never went back to it . :tfsad

Simple, since decepts stole energon from human power stations to eat they could use more energy to fly. While Autobots try to be law abiding they could not afford to waste energy in flying.

The real answer here is that there IS no real answer. The writers just didn't care. However, if you want to be like Xbob and make logical guesses to fill in continuity errors, you could say that all Transformers could fly on Cybertron, but when they got to Earth the Autobots took on ground-based forms and slowly lost their ability to fly. The Decepticons, taking airborne/lightweight forms, never stopped flying.

 

It's not really a MTMTE thing, either. The Autobots sometimes flew in Season 2. So........... oh, nevermind. I'm getting a headache.

it's interesting how by all rights sideswipe (apart from tracks) should be the only airbased autobot that could fly because of his jetpack.

 

in dinobot island they used jetpacks to get to their destinations.

 

 

notice how the decepticons and the combiners never had that problem
