Once Bay has finished raping the still-warm corpse of this franchise...

Recommended Posts

In terms of the aesthetic I think any director will have a difficult time trying to eclipse the models in the Bay trilogy. And that's a big barrier for any director who takes over such a visual franchise, will they be able to amaze the audience in the same way as the 2007 movie did?

I'd prefer the medium TF sticks to in the next few years to be animation ... but Guillermo del Toro or Zak Snyder could put an interesting slant on the story.

Sadly, I think he'll be too busy with the Superman franchise (if you haven't heard, look it up).

For most people, I think the initial novelty has worn thin. My eyes practically orgasmed when I saw the first film, but as time passed it totally wore off, leaving a big loud action film surprisingly thin on substance and coherent narrative. Before anybody says anything, Spider-Man 2; Batman Begins; The Dark Knight; Watchmen; 300; Iron Man - I could go on. My point is, we now live in a world where it's totally acceptable - approaching the norm, even - for blockbusters to also be intelligent, sharp, funny and extremely faithful to their source, while still making squillions of dollars at the box office.

They can hire anybody and you still won't like it. The reason is no matter who they get Peter Jackson, Sam Rami, James cameron, it's gonna be just a job to them the exact same way they hire Michael Bay to do just another job.

I do have to agree with John 14:6 Jackson's movies were long and boring and lets face it, Aliens and Terminator kicked ass, but other wise Cameron's an art house hack (I hated Avatar)

Hire any of these people and all your gonna get is there last movie, but with robots instead of blue aliens and midgets.

What you need, is someone who WANTS to make a Transformers movie, and sadly even with all the money and fan fair from the first 2 films, not a single person is stepping up to the plate. The powers that be are raking in money, so why should they want to change a dam thing.

It would be nice if they'd listen to our imput, but when more threads start off with titles like

It kinda takes away from our credability and makes us easy to dismiss, as after all, they are still counting the money.

So on that note, I'm gonna agree with this, snapback.pngBisons Fan, on 16 April 2010 - 10:07 AM, said:

And deal with the fact that real simple, it is what it is.

Then again, I really haven't loked a series since Beast Machines, so maybe I'm just use to the hack attitude that goes into TF media?

It's really nothing new, and honestly I'm only still in this for the toys which I have to say Bay did a great job of pushing an envelope on thumbsup1.gif

No, they could hire anyone competent and I'd like it. Nolan had no great love of Batman before making Batman Begins; I believe the same is true of Favreau and Iron Man.

Also, about three months after RotF left cinemas, there was a story doing the rounds in the film press about Bay being replaced for the third film - Empire magazine even suggested that Neill Blomkamp take over the franchise; it seems he's only directing the third because he cut short his year's break between films and went straight into shooting TF3 for a 2011 rather than 2012 release. The RotF box office doesn't matter in terms of the sequel, the buzz around RotF is so bad it could kill TF3's box office; this is why they're rushing it for 2011 and insisting on 3D, despite the fact Bay doesn't want to film it in 3D.

This could be good or bad - he'll most likely produce a by-the-numbers action film which will either: a) omit his stupid jokes (wrecking ball testes...), have a ridiculously straightfoward storyline that makes sense and a reduced supporting cast of robots, making more time for the core characters to develop (and maybe more than 30 seconds of screentime for the best-designed robot of the entire franchise, Sideswipe) and actually be enjoyable,

or b) come up with the worst script imaginable, fill the screen with thousands of badly-designed cannon fodder mechs, use the 3D to have Devastator teabag the audience while Megan Fox's lips prepare to rear and attack, all as a bird-finger to the studio for rushing him.

Sorry for insanely long post, rant over.

Any future Transformers reboot will only be possible if TF3 is a complete and utter bomb. These films have their critics, me being one of them (RotF) however they are successful and that is the reason why a reboot of the franchise wouldn't make sense. You could use your Spider-Man and Batman examples if you want, however there were special circumstances with those two film series.

Batman was rebooted due to the original film series turning stale and departing from the style of the original film. WB wanted a serious, real world Batman series.

Spider-Man is being rebooted due to the power struggle between Raimi and Sony.

If there were any future take/reboot of the Transformers film series, I would hope they go full on CGI similar to what the producers of TMNT did. I would like to see these CGI movies have a serious tone. Hasbro could do like one movie a year, and release them direct to DVD similar to the Marvel and DC releases over the last few years. The producers need to take a new approach, and going full on CGI could work. I mean, look at the success DreamWorks Animation and Pixar have with their full length animated films. Just rebooting the series for the sake of doing it doesn't make sense. They need to come up with something new.

You can rumor and have a magazine suggest all you want, but that doesn't mean anything.

They did put a gun to Bays head (so to speak) to keep him on a schedual and not let the movies go stail in waiting.

I wouldn't look to much into that though..

Now even if they suggested someone else, the question still would be would they want to make the movie, or would it simply just be another job for them?

All the other names getting thrown out there have one thing to do with my origional point, these people wanted to make their movies.

I don't think Michael Bay is incompitent. I think he's a guy doing a job he was hired for.

He even admitted when he first started working on Transformers that he knew little to nothing about them. He just did what he thought was right with the concept put in his lap.

Now granted alot of TF2 gets skipped in the DVD player, but I don't put all the blame on Michael Bay. Again, he was hired for a job. At any given time a company like say HASBRO could have stepped in and tapped his shoulder with some guidance.

Nope, they just let the man do his job, and put pressure on him to keep doing it as they swam in cash.

Could they find someone better then Bay, probably. Still that doesn't take away from the fact that he's just steering someone elses ship who isn't giving directions.

Michael Bay has done a hell of a job! He brought Transformers from G1 back from the dead.

As far as I'm concern there is no doubt that Transformers 3 will be a big hit!

I love his style of film making, he is the best action director on Earth! I really don't know

what people wanted from Revenge Of The Fallen? Did you expect some Oscar worthy

performances from a movie about giant robots?! It's a fun movie and you should accept it like that!

All hail Michael Bay!!!

Spider-Man 3 was, I believe, the highest grossing film ever at the time of its release, or at least one of them.

Was the CGI Ninja Turtles film good? I haven't seen it yet...

I'd have to disagree. Bay was given a tight leash on the first film, Spielberg was watching over him. He was given complete control on the second and, well, look at the result - robot heaven, mecha-minstrelsy, wrecking 'balls', Leo Spitz, leg-humper 9000, beach invasion by the US military of a landlocked country, an army of giant alien robots taken down not by the other giant alien robots but the US military - again. It goes on. Bay's apparently a control freak, Megan Fox refers to him in interviews as a Nazi. Not to mention his particularly creepy way of auditioning her. Having watched Star Trek, I'm starting to believe that he probably mostly tore up Kurtzman and Orci's script, I can't believe they could write Star Trek and also RotF.

Tl;dr - if you're hired to do a job, regardless of your previous interest in that job, you do it to the best of your ability. John Favreau had no interest in Iron Man (as far as I'm aware) and so far has turned out two films that are achingly perfect to the source material. Bay being Bay is not a defence, he's a lousy filmmaker.

Hmmm. 1 post - is that you, Michael? Kidding, welcome to the board.

Two things: RotF was not my idea of fun; personally I'd rather gouge out my testicles with a melon baller then deep-fry and eat them than see that film again. Best action director on Earth - seen Avatar yet? or failing that, the last hour of District 9? In fact, if the trailers are anything to go by, let's resume this discussion after Iron Man 2 is released.

It's great that you enjoyed RotF; unfortunately, the prevailing IRL impression I have from talking to casual movie going, non-transformers fan friends is that they hated it as much as I did. Moreso, in fact. There's a lot of bad buzz surrounding this film, Bay's going to have to work hard on 3 to win back the affection of people who loved the first. Let's face it, even if the magic wore off for some of us, the first one was an experience on the big screen.

Spider-Man 3 was, I believe, the highest grossing film ever at the time of its release, or at least one of them.

Did I ever say Spider-Man 3 was a failure at the Box Office? No, I said there was a power struggle between Sam Raimi and Sony. This power struggle caused Sony to go in a new direction and reboot the franchise with new actors and a new director. Yes, Spider-Man 3 made a ton of money, but Sony wanted Venom in it and forced Raimi to put the villian in, which resulted in a mess of a movie.

I'm actually glad they are rebooting it. I never liked Tobey as Parker and can't stand Dunst as Mary Jane.

As far as TMNT, I thought the CGI Turtles film was good and in the spirit of the original live action film, which I loved.

Well, you got the 'hell' part right.

I find it AMAZING how TF 'fans' denigrate the franchise and insult the intelligence of people who happen to like Transformers by saying stuff like this:

'Did you expect some Oscar worthy performances from a movie about giant robots?!'

Insinuating that TFs are unworthy of 'Oscar worthy performances' does not help at all, whatsoever. It's a movie. For that reason alone, not to mention the budget, I would DEMAND performances of that caliber. A Transformer film should just be schlock, and we should accept it? It is not at all unprecedented for the actors in movies of this genre to give good/great performances. My god, most of the actors in ROTF gave a better performance in the FIRST movie, proof positive that nobody in the movie seemed to give much of a damn and were just there to pick up a paycheck.

I'll be fair: There are certain things that Mick Bay does that are rather cool. They are all action-related, and thusly leave me with an empty feeling after I've left the movie theater--and that is after a GOOD Mick Bay film (the closest thing to that would be the first Bad Boys movie, which featured Will Smith AND Martin Lawrence at the height of their comedic powers, and thusly superceded what I like to call the 'Bay-Effect.').Give me a story of some type, give me some decent performances (at least), and at least pretend to like what you are working on.

My God, it's like he can see into my mind... :beer

I would agree that Bay handles action well (I think there are people who do it better though, but most of them seem to have disappeared of late - well, except Cameron) but his directorial talents are questionable - although this wasn't always the case, anyone remember 'The Rock' and how awesome that was? Although to go back to Shellformer's argument, that had fantastic turns from Nicholas Cage, Sean Connery and Ed Harris to gloss over the logical inconsistencies. RotF even jettisoned Jon Voight, the one decent actor in the first film (or maybe he just saw it coming...); I also strongly agree that to claim all the Transformers franchise deserves is schlock SF is to do it a disservice. In the hands of a creative team with vision, there's something to rival Star Wars in all this.

Agreed. I didn't mind Tobey Macguire, but I always had the nagging feeling that there were actors who could play a better Peter Parker - too late now, but what about Jake Gyllenhall? He always reminded me of the slightly cocky early-nineties Spider Man. Don't even get me started on Kirsten Dunst.

Did anyone here ever read James Cameron's 10-page treatment for his Spider Man film? It's... interesting.

Will have to get hold of TMNT. Thanks.
