Don Murphy Speaks Up About the TF Movie

Recommended Posts

I don't know whether to laugh my ass off at this whole discussion, or gnaw my leg off to escape it.

There's nothing like a bunch of fanboys with equal measures of confidence and cluelessness arguing about a movie that isn't going to hit the screens for another two years. The best part is how everyone here knows SO much about Hollywood and how movies are made. Roffle, thy name is fanboy speculation.

Maybe we should all take a step back and think, "isn't it cool that there's going to be a Transformers movie that has a decent chance of actually kicking ass?" And PLEASE, for the love of Primus, learn to discern the difference between what YOU think is important to the Transformers, and what REALLY IS important. Opinions are great, but let's remember that that's all they are.

:wave

Your kidding me right? Your calling me a fanboy when you say "for the love of Primus"?

Why do we have to insult each other, call each other names, etc... why can't we have an argument or discussion without going insane and acting like a bunch of children.

Forget I said anything. Jesus.

must.... resist... getting sucked into discussion......

Hey Comfortador, I wasn't directing anything at you, so you can relax. SFC said it best, but let me just add my own perspective on things:

Does anyone remember the sh*tfit that Spider-Man fans had when they found out that the web shooters would be organic? It's an embarrassment to all fanboys IMO. I had hoped that we would be able to learn from such pointless arguments and move on, but I fear that that was just wishful thinking.

Every single time fanboys debate these issues, someone always says "well it seems realistic to me." What they really mean is, "I want it to be this way, and I've created my own fanboy-ish explanation for it, and I don't want anyone telling me that it's not plausible!"

Look. Let's step away from what has been accepted by the TF fandom over the years, and approach this from outside the bubble, with fresh eyes. (Which, incidentally, is EXACTLY what Hollywood will be doing, in case you want a clue as to what direction this film will or won't go in.) Transforming robots is one thing. Transforming, *shrinking* robots is something entirely different. You're asking people to buy in to something that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to begin with. If Megatron transformed into a handgun, the first thing people would think is, "why is he a gun? why not something more powerful, like a tank?" Doesn't that make more sense?

Let's also keep in mind that the ONLY reason we are even talking about a gun Megatron is b/c Takara made a decision 20-odd years ago to use a gun toy from an existing toy line as the bad guy leader in their new "Transformers" toy line. Did it make any sense? No, it didn't. And TF fans shouldn't be angry at DeSanto for simply recognizing this truth. If they want to be angry at someone, they could perhaps get angry at Takara for cobbling together a toy line from a bunch of existing, unrelated toys. Better yet, they should get angry at themselves for being so stuck on the way things were in G1 that they are no longer able to objectively critique anything about G1.

The pic, or did you go watch the vid? :tfgrin

There's a vid? The pic is creepy as it is. Where's the vid? I gotta see it now.

Click the sig, it should take you to the first flash vid.

If your given 2 options, both are completely doable, why not choose the option that follows the original theme, why "bastardize" it for no reason other than to change it?

But that's the exact point Murphy is trying to make. Both options AREN'T completely doable, which is why....with the info he has given us....he is trying to give us the characters we love and the story we know, but still making it believable to the general public.

"Reality" to the general movie going public is different that regular reality. In "Reality" Bruce Willis can take a team of oil drillers up into space to plant a nuclear weapon on an asteroid. In "Reality" aliens can come from another planet, launch hundreds of city-sized ships at the Earth, and Will Smith can save the day by piloting a spaceship that crashed at Roswell. And in "Reality" robots can come from an alien world, crash land on Earth millions of years ago, and then be awakened today so that they can continue their fight. But what Murphy thinks won't fit into "Reality" is that 20 foot tall robots can transform into objects that can fit into a bookbag. That's pushing things too far.

I guess I just don't agree. Let's hope no mutants with growing abilities appear in a movie from here on out, cause it would fall under the same category.

The Hulk did it fine. The hulk was 5 times the size of Banner, and to me, the CGI was fine. I didn't question the realism of it, because it's integral to the story. No one questions Mystiques ability to alter her mass to suit other morphs.

I think it's less important than you think.

Mutants, and furthermore...people, are different. It's easier to believe that because someone has a mutant power, or the in case of the hulk....radioactive DNA, that allows their cells to replicate at an exponential rate causing them to increase in size than it is for a robot made of metal(which isn't organic and only grows or shrinks due to temperature) and go from 20ft. to 6in. in the blink of an eye.

Well, let's not forget the main point here either:

The Hulk *is* a guy who turns into a giant, green monster. That's what he is. You know, why he's called "The Hulk" and all that... So when people go to see a Hulk movie, they aren't going to need convincing that someone can turn into a big green guy. They already accept that idea b/c they know that's who the Hulk is. All the writers need to do is inject some pseudo-scientific gobbledygook about cellular mitosis or whatever so that the average filmgoer will think that "it could really happen," at least within the world of the movies.

Similarly, what *is* The Transformers? Well, it's a bunch of transforming robots. People will expect to see that when they go to see this film, and they won't really question the plausibility of it that much, as a result. Again, the barest "explanation" will satisfy most people.

So it doesn't follow to say that size change in The Hulk is the same as size change in The Transformers. Size change is integral to the Hulk, but not to the Transformers. The only robots who did the whole shrinking thing anyway were Megatron, Soundwave (and his tapes), and Reflector. Megatron needs to be in the film, since he's the leader of the bad guys. And there's already a precedent for making Megs a tank instead of a gun (even G1 Galvy's alt mode could be fairly described as a tank b/c it was a huge cannon on treads). Soundwave doesn't *need* to be in the film, but (thankfully) DeSanto thinks he's awesome (I agree), and so they're trying to figure out how to make him work out in the film. Reflector.... uh, yeah.

So let's please please please unclench our cornholes a bit here, and be thankful that the producers of this film are approaching Transformers with a thoughtful mindset, and want it to work as a film. Any hack could put together a "completely faithful" G1 retread, but Hollywood isn't in the habit of spending millions of dollars just to make a live-action transliteration of an existing cartoon.

Well i think the film is going in the right direction. There has to be a sense of realism in these films it all has to translate on the screen. Megatron needs to be imposing and fearsome and could only manage this in tank mode, not gun mode.

I will see the film and love it. If the film is based on G1 but not super faithful then as long as they take the elements that work and utilise those elements the movie will be a hit.

Prime is a truck plain and simple it's an iconic image and it shouldn't be changed

I am curious as to what will happen with soundwave though.

Hmm who will the core TF be in the movie?

Autobots

Prime

Jazz

IronHide

Ratchet

Bumblebee

Sunstreaker

Sideswipe

Deceptiicons

Megatron

Soundwave

Starscream

3 seeker jets

Insecticons?

Soundwaves tapes

This is my opinion but what do you guys think?

I've been thinking about that myself. Seven primary characters from each side...

The weird thing is to hear DeSanto talking about "Hot Shot" [sic?] and his potential alt mode. I had assumed that we were going to be seeing only '84 TFs in this film. But then again, they didn't go with the original X-Men crew for the first film, did they? They simply chose the ones that were the coolest / most unique / afforded the most possibilities story-wise......

So if Hot Rod makes the cut, should we be expecting to see Rodimus Prime at some point in the future? Geez -- if there's ALL of G1 to draw upon, there could be anyone in this film.

P.S. There's no way Optimus would NOT be a truck. BW/BM aside (okay, okay, and those stupid G2 Gobots as well), Optimus has always been a truck. Can't say the same for the consistency of Megs' alt mode, though...

It's crazy to think that this is even happening..... :clap

Is that true? Wasn't he something else in G2?

As far as all the other crap. I must admit, I was one of the people criticizing the organic webshooters. I thought one of the key parts of his story to show you how much of a blue collar hero Spider-Man was, was sometimes he couldn't even afford webfluid. I understood why he changed it though, maybe someday I could understand a non gun Megatron.

but today is NOT that day. :)

G2 Optimus Prime was initially just a reissue of G1 Prime. Then they released "Laser Optimus Prime" (see "Rid Scourge"), which was a long-nose tanker, but close enough. The G2 "Hero" Optimus Prime (see "RiD Destructicon Scourge") was also a truck, though it pulled an anti-aircraft cannon instead of a trailer. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

However, they did also make a race car version of OP in G2, as a "Gobot" (see "Spychangers"). But they did the same for Megs and Soundwave too -- I don't think anyone counts that.
