Don Murphy Speaks Up About the TF Movie

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, happy to see there are a lot more sensible people in this boards.

Regarding the Soundwave thing, I think Murphy really wants Soundwave to be in, but is not just sure how to pull it off yet without making him turn into a tape deck. Murphy understands that Soundwave is an essential member of the Decepticons back in G1. Taking out Soundwave from Megatron's crew is like removing Wolverine from the X-Men.

It's a good thing that there aren't too many other TF's with Soundwave's predicament. I mean the Seekers? Easily done as jets. Constructicons? Sure! Devastator :drool Now it is a little sad to hear that he's not going to include the Dinobots, but hey, big metallic dinosaurs really wouldn't be realistic now would it? ;)

At this point, the smartest thing is to ignore the fans. This movie is being made for the mainstream public. If anything, Transfans only make up like 10% of that. That's not counting hardcore fans, the fans on the messageboards...that's counting EVERYONE that has been a fan of the shows since the 1980's through today. Us on the messageboards count for like 1% of the total people going to see this movie. Murphy is coming to us to keep the movie on true to the TF mythos, but he can't deliver another G1. What he has to do is make something that everyone will enjoy. People 10-25 are going to be the core audience of this movie, and parents aren't going to want their kids to see a movie where the main character is a gun. Live with it.

Furthermore, why cast voice actors that haven't done Transformers work within the last 20 years? To please 1% of their audience? If they didn't case Cullen and Welker, you're still gonna see it, so why waste the money? The better choice would be Chalk and Kaye. Why? They've been doing TF shows for nearly 10 years. The audiences of Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Armada and Energon are still going to be within their core demographics, so why not go with someone the audience is going to recognize?

With Dreamworks, we're guarenteed a great movie with a great cast and great effects....so just relax and go with the flow. If Murphy has a question on his boards(like the one about the Transforming sound), then answer it honestly, but don't get bent out of shape when you find out that it's not going to be a G1 remake.

Sorry SFC, I'm going to have to diagree with you about the voice actors thing. Peter Cullen put more passion into Prime, and Frank Welker is the most talented voice actor ever. These guys on the new shows talk like their reading lines off a sheet. The Megatron voice is O.K. but I would rather hear Welker as Megs. Fan or no fan, Frank Welker and Peter Cullen will add that extra something to the movie. And by the way, I don't know if you ever watch Cartoon Network, but Peter Cullen has been doing the Optimus Prime voice for their commercials since 2000. He said so in an interview at BotCon this year. The guy from Cartoon Network asked him if he would do these commercials in the Optimus Prime voice.

Anyway, just my opinion.

Frank Welker's the man. He is one of the most diverse voice actors in the world of animation, so I don't see why they shouldn't include him. If they can bring back most of the living voice actors of G1, that would be great. I don't see what's wrong with casting people who hasn't been in the movies for quite some time. Look at Kill Bill. David Carradine hasn't done any big time movie work for a while, but this didn't keep Tarantino from picking him and the moviegoers loved it.

Big names for voice acting also doesn't mean big box office. Sinbad's a clear example of that. A lot of viewers don't really mind if the voice actors are really big names, just as long as they do their job well.

Peter Cullen and Frank Welker aren't the greatest voice acters in the world. Even they get someone else I'll still watch the movie.

I don't understand everyones obsession about realism involving a movie which features giant robots from another planet fighting each other.

Why betray the story/origins when they are what made the series popular in the first place.

I hear Catwoman was number 1 at the box office. Oh wait, it was a failure. Could some of it have to do with the fact that it had little to no connection to the actual character from the book? along with the poor script and acting, I'd have to say yes.

Green Lantern Comedy with Jack Black? It's coming, and the reason it is, is because people seem to not give a crap about WHY the books/toys are popular, they just crap all over the origins of it to suit whatever current fad is popular.

There is a difference between "totally changing every single bit from the source material and keeping nothing but the name, plus doing a movie that sucks AS A MOVIE" and "changing a part of the appearance of one of several characters". How many fanboys complained because Wolverine's claws emerged from between his knuckles instead of the back of his hands? How many fanboys complained about the black outfits? How many fanboys complained about Spider-Man's organic webshooters? Did it keep those flicks from making big $$$?

I'll still watch (and probably love) the movie. I just think it would be so awesome with Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. :thumb

Touche. Some movies do well despite it, but it's in the minority. For every one that you can name that is successful despite it's changes, I can show you 5 more that sucked.
