I saw two kids crying out side already running shows

Recommended Posts

I was young when it came out. The original is VERY hard to get hold of, even the special editions tamed down the subliminal messages in it.

FWIW - I didn't think it was like "OMG SCARIEST THING EVER!!!" I just thought it was a bit creepy, even though I didn't know why!?! The effects & script are cheesy as hell - I just felt a bit uneasy after watching it. I think the surroundings/situation in which you watch a film makes ALL the difference too. I watched that Blair Witch film with my mates & laughed at how crappy it was. I was a different story when I was in the block (army accommodation - always in the middle of nowhere) all alone when it came on TV. I was jumpy walking through the corridors to the toilets, washing machines, etc that weekend. Same with The Ring - I watched that in an old watchtower on a deserted airfield all alone.

I wouldn't say any film has ever had a permanent effect on me though, a couple of twitchy nights at worst!

My brother was 13 when Daredevil came out. At the point where Colin Farrel flicks the peanut into that old lady's throat on the plane, he started wimpering. He wanted to leave the entire time from that point on. I got fed up to the point where I whisper/hissed at him that if he wanted to leave, he could do one of two things (I wasn't driving at this point in my life yet). He could call our mother and she could come pick him up and then come back for me later. OR he could just wait outside the auditorium and when the movie was over, we'd leave together. He chose of all things to stay put and kept his mouth shut.

So that should say something about kids and sensitivity nowadays. They're too damned sensitive IMO. Kids need to be exposed this stuff more so they'll develop a level of familiarity and not be so sensitive.

I'm sure my aforementioned brother (who's now 17 (18 in a few weeks)) would not sit well with Gangs of New York, but then again, he's always been a little sensitive.

He freaked out on a movie at 13?

What in the world?! I dont mean any harm but was your bro taking estrogen pills at the time. By 13, I had seen several Friday the 13ths, Elm Streets, Faces of Death, Tales from the Crypt, ect, ect. Back then, some one gets decapitated and I would have laughed.

Well, to be fair to my brother, he's a little sensitive...wait. Let me adjust that. He's just sensitive period. Even talking about the Holocaust, he gets a little ansy. Knowing him, he wouldn't be able to watch Clockwork Orange (and this was coming from my father. And who knows their kids better than their parents...most of the time).

But I've learned to accept what things upset him and what things don't.

Joking about feeding the cats to the dogs-upsetting

Watching giant robots beating the sh!t out of each other-okay with it

You'd be amazed how many people I know who said they were afraid of the Gremlins movies as kids, GREMLINS!

That movie scared me the first time I saw it. But when I got older and gave it another go. No problems now. But I used to be so scared by it that I had to sleep with a night light and have my father check almost literally every place in my room that a Gremlin could have been hiding (drawers, closet, under the bed, etc). It also used to creep me out when my sister would torment me and hum the theme to the movie.

Never got the deal about the Exorcist. My parents kept warning me how scary it was before I watched it to the point that I was terrified... until I saw the film itself and was all.. "Huh?"

That probably has something to do with the first runs (most early cinema showings & very few video releases) having some f***ed-up subliminal messaging in it - COMPLETELY LOST in the later versions. It took me several years to get hold of an original VHS copy again. This is the 3rd time I've mentioned this & I swear I feel like I'm talking to myself here. :redface

lol, i don't care how much subliminal stuffs in that, theres no way i could EVER be scared of those cheesy sfx. it was ground breaking in it's day and yea sure it was probably scary as hell (my mother-in-law hides her face anytime the chick comes on the tv), but uh yea lmao. i've seen b movies with better sfx.

i watched the movie in the dark, alone, while my wife was @ my mother-in-law's.

blair witch project really freaked me out because well i used to live in the country sooooo your surrounded by woods like that. it doesn't help that we've got bears, panthers, and mountain lions surrounding us making noises and such (your not a human if a panther screaming doesn't scare the Powerglide out of you anyway!!!). a friend of mine saw it in the cinema with all of 5 people, and was flipping out on the way home (because you have to drive through woodsy areas). i was convinced that it was actual footage too because of the way they had the documentaries and things of that nature. i found out it was fake when i saw the chick on jay leno.

Blair Witch project was a joke. Seriously what's scary about this? I never saw it in a theater but did see it with a group of friends on a widescreen tv with surround sound. Everybody laughed there ass off from beginning to end. That said I've been lost in the woods growing up & there was absolutely nothing scary about dysfunctional kids pretending some urban legend was chasing them.

There's no arguing the cheesiness of the Exorcist other than that what the director pulled off was a hella lot scarier/effective than most if all Hollywood horror movies this day & age. Watch the remade House on Haunted Hill the same night & as Powerglideed up as that is it did even come close to that level of creepiness.

Getting back on topic.....I saw it opening night with a couple of friends of mine. After seeing it I had a discussion with my wife as to whether she and I should still take our 6 year old son to see it on July 4th. He has been watching all of the old Transformers cartoons with me over the last month while he was recovering from a surgery, and was really wanting to go to see the new movie badly since there has been a media blitz on TV about it. So after much debate, she and I decided to take him to see it and try to distract him during the inappropriate discussion between Sam and his drunken mother and also during the Bumblebee "lubrication" of the Sector 7 dude scene. I felt that those were the two most inappropriate scenes in the movie for a small child.

We were successful in doing that, but as it turns out he started crying when Ratchet and Prime talked about Jazz being dead. In fact from the moment that Megatron ripped him in two, my boy kept asking "What happened to Jazz?", "Where is Jazz?", and "Is Jazz going to be ok?" I felt bad for him because it brought back memories of when I was a child and I saw Optimus Prime die in the original Transformers movie. That crushed me too at the time. Now he had seen the original Transformers the movie a while back but I dont think that it meant that much to him at the time because he hadn't yet watched any of the original cartoons. If he had done that before he watched the original movie there might have been more of an attatchment there. Also I think the Jazz thing bothered him a lot because just hours before we went to the theater he had bought a Fast Action Battlers Jazz at the store and had been playing with it all day. He may have felt like he wasted his money....LOL.

Anyway though, I can say from that experience that he was upset for a couple of days over Jazz being killed. Maybe that is what was upsetting all those kids coming out of the movie.

When I went to go see the movie outside two different screens playing the movie I saw kids ages 5-10 crying outside the theatre with angry looking parents. Any one else notice this phenomina?

They were probably horrified by Jazz's death.

Wusses.

I'd be more afraid of lions, tigers and bears (oh my!) than any stupid movie about A WITCH!
