I saw two kids crying out side already running shows

Recommended Posts

My brother was 13 when Daredevil came out. At the point where Colin Farrel flicks the peanut into that old lady's throat on the plane, he started wimpering. He wanted to leave the entire time from that point on. I got fed up to the point where I whisper/hissed at him that if he wanted to leave, he could do one of two things (I wasn't driving at this point in my life yet). He could call our mother and she could come pick him up and then come back for me later. OR he could just wait outside the auditorium and when the movie was over, we'd leave together. He chose of all things to stay put and kept his mouth shut.

So that should say something about kids and sensitivity nowadays. They're too damned sensitive IMO. Kids need to be exposed this stuff more so they'll develop a level of familiarity and not be so sensitive.

I'm sure my aforementioned brother (who's now 17 (18 in a few weeks)) would not sit well with Gangs of New York, but then again, he's always been a little sensitive.

He freaked out on a movie at 13?

What in the world?! I dont mean any harm but was your bro taking estrogen pills at the time. By 13, I had seen several Friday the 13ths, Elm Streets, Faces of Death, Tales from the Crypt, ect, ect. Back then, some one gets decapitated and I would have laughed.

When i saw the movie, the theater was about 80% full with a large number of young children. I didn't hear one cry, see one person leave (sans adults toting popcorn bags or empty pop cups, or my friend who stepped out during the prime/megs battle to empty the bladder).

as for the people commenting on the wussiness of the youth today, I can agree. when I was 7, i was watching horror movies without being phased. to this day, not a whole lot gets to me (i still will NEVER see the Exorcist). But my sister had the training one guy earlier mentioned (prep hands for covering eyes or ears). She is getting over it at 16, but still exists in a few movies. Someday when I have kids, I am going to raise them like my parents did. no spending all day watching dora or wiggles. they are watching mindless cartoons of fun (maybe some sesame street in there for content). My kids will not be wusses

Scary films are a good way of keeping kids in line. "Don't misbehave or Freddy will get you!" Some would call that cruel but i wouldn't.

You'd be amazed how many people I know who said they were afraid of the Gremlins movies as kids, GREMLINS!

For the record I watched Children of the Corn when I was six, number of parents I killed: zero

Wuss. :07laugh

Seriously though. You haven't experienced true horror until you've seen either The Exorcist or Event Horizon. Those are truly nasty films that make watching the Saw movies a breeze.

My defense mechanism/still is if something truly disturbing/icky shows up on the big screen is to simply tilt my glasses slightly down so the entire screen blurs. :07redface I don't do it often several parts of Grindhouse being the last one. Think I watched most of Event Horizon this way & that was on VHS on a small screen. That was just too Powerglideing much. Some of that was just stomach churning. Violence/blood/decapitations are a non issue.

Meh, only genuinely scary stuff like the Alien trilogy freaked me out as a kid... And E.T. :redface

In my defense how can anyone find that.. THING cute?

I cant be left alone in hospital wards.

Pissing face huggers scarred me for life.

Oh my God!! I though I was the only one!!!

Seriously, my now-deceased grandparents quite literally forced me to watch that goggle-eyed Blot-coloured bastard (who has something long and glowing that he likes to touch kids with...) despite the fact I was crying, cowering and terrified at four years old.

"Why doesn't he like it? it's supposed to be cute!"

Newsflash, granny - I found the things in Alien cuter than that... abomination, which I saw about a week before ET (my grandfather had no idea what the film was, so he let me watch it while he went next door to read the paper) and was totally unfazed by - but my parents did have to sit me down and talk to me about the 'new words' I'd learnt :tflaugh

After that, I became utterly addicted to bloodthirsty films - I was raised on a diet of Predator, Terminator, Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, Aliens, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn and more; the only stipulation was that my parents wouldn't let me watch sex scenes (until From Dusk Till Dawn - which they let me watch when I was about twelve; I still don't have a girlfriend: probably the horror of seeing lovely Salma Hayek turn into something almost as ugly as ET...).

Yup, Kids today are wusses. And I have teh Best. Parents. Evar. Thanks, guys.

Also, I never killed, maimed or generally hurt anyone, ever - media violence as a corrupting influence is a total lie, as I discovered when I read all the good research for my A-level in Psychology.

BTW Sharptooth, do you think we should set up an online helpgroup for all those traumatized by ET - that bastard's got to have left more victims than just us over the years...

I don't think you have a leg to stand on here Mr. "Afraid of ET."

One of the main things about The Exorcist that gets to everyone is the religion interaction. Even if you don't believe, part of your mind still says "Wow. I can't believe they went there...oh Blot, now her head's spinning..."

Also, I watched Event Horizon....I guess my stomach is weird when it comes to movies. Freddy, Jason, Saw, Alien make me want to puke, but EH...nah. Good story though.

Gremlins has it's moments that could frighten a kid, but not the whole thing. I too was afraid of ET when I was little (I happen to think he's adorable now), so don't feel bad.

What gets me is, all these people keep saying kids are wussies today and keep whining about it. Well aren't you just the greatest person in the world? So what if a kid's afraid of something? That's part of childhood. They could be doing worse than being afraid of something.

I can't get over how cold some of you can be. Cruel even.

We probably should.

Okay imagine a creature if you will, which comes from another word, has dry wrinkly skin like an elephant's only brown and very dusty looking. It has short little legs, but long creeping fingers with a glowing probe on the end of them (look into the background of E.T. it was originally going to be a horror movie). It has a long expendable neck which protrudes from its sloping boney shoulders. You can not only see the creatures rib cage, but also some of its internal organs including its beating heart. It wheezes as it attempts to vocalize your name, "Ellliottt..." as it lurches ever closer.

Not exactly the freakin Telletubies is it?
