I swear this retarded thread is about to get locked and burned.

Nobody's listening to anyone and this is the dumbest issue of all time anyway.

just to add a dose of "real world" to this conversation.

Sure they are, but they don't really fit that character the way a stereo, CD player or tape deck does since the three I just mentioned are pieces of dedicated communications electronics with broadcast or playback functions.

I have a tapedeck from the 70's and FYI - it doesnt broadcast anything. It doesnt even have a radio in it.

Also as has been mentioned before -a Tapedeck with a full raido and a CB and a Walkitalkie and a Police scanner and heck a tivo would be about the size of a large freckle to soundwave. I am not sure why he wouldnt just tape it to his head or something if it were that important. I have no problem with the Decepticon beauty mark.

But he shouldnt need to defy the laws of physics and rip holes in the space time continuum just because you think he should be sweating to the oldies with his 8-track.

The heart of your agument is that you don't like the idea of Transformers turning into coomon everyday objects other than vehicles (and maybe animals), That is pretty much what you are saying, isn't it?

Okay, see I think I've found our problem. That's not what I'm saying.

I have absolutely no problem with Transformers turning into common everyday objects. I said I felt sorry for Frenzy, not that I had a problem with him on a conceptual level. In fact, I think it's awesome the way he's been designed.

Did you ever notice how, in the cartoon, Soundwave always got taken inside some giant warehouse or factory so that one he transformed into his giant robot mode he didn't rip the place to pieces? It's not realistic to expect every place you infiltrate to be a giant warehouse.

The scene of Frenzy transforming in the commercial demonstrates perfectly how if you're going to make use of the small alt. mode, you need a similarly small robot mode. Soundwave couldn't have transformed without the guy in that chair knowing about it. There's nothing stealthy or sneaky about going from teeny-tiny to super huge with no middle ground.

There's zero, or minimal, tactical advantage. And what little advantage there would be could undoubtably be gotten in an easier way than inventing Mass Shifting technology.

I think this is just a hobbes/Tramp orgy... no one else can say anything

:lol

Soundwave's original alt mode was an excellent disguise that also enhanced his function as a Communications officier, and actually made possible to fully fulfill his function without the use of outside equipment. It was a perfect alt form for him, and as such requires mass conversion capability. The perfect alt mode for a character is one that not only disguises him, but also enhances his function in his area of expertise. A transformation into dedicated communications hardware like a stereo, tape deck or CD player, or a computer, not only provides him with a perfect disguise becuase of their ubiquitous nature, but also greatly enhances his function as a communcations expert because they all can receive transmissions, analize the data, and store it, then play it back for others to hear in real time. They are also portable, though not self-mobile, but that sin't necessary to fulfill the function of communications.

Whether you like the idea or hate it, doesn't matter. It isn't a "stupid" idea, and does work well for given characters. Soundwave, Blaster, and Perceptor are just three of those characters whose alt modes in the cartoons were perfectly suited to their jobs, and who needed Mass converion to puul it off, and who, in a movie would also be best served with similar transformations and mass conversion capabilities. Just because you don't like that concept does not make it a bad one or a stupid one. Just because an alt mode isn't self mobil doesn't make it a stupid idea. It isn't good for the leader to have such an alt mode, but for others whose functions don't require that, so what?

A radio van or a helecopter are not something that most people will encounter everywhere. In fact, they are only around when something is up and having either mode is more likely to draw attention to you than it is to make an effective disguise. a portable tape deck, stereo system or CD player is not likely to draw any attention no matter where it is. That is what makes it such a good disguise for a communications officer, and, for someone like Soundwave, who needs to be on par with the others in size and power if for no other reason than survival in combat, such a transformation requires Mass conversion capability. For most of the other Decepticons, other than Frenzy, their alt modes are designed for assault, not stealth. They aren't meant to blend in. Soundwave and Movie Frenzy both have alt modes devoted to blending in to their surroundings. For Soundwave, who needs to be a large size robot, he also needs a small size alt mode devoted to data collection and analysis, and communications that easily blends in everywhere. That means a stereo system, CD player, or tape deck. That also means Mass conversion.

But what you're saying is that UNLESS Soundwave turns into something related to playing/recording sound, he can't do his job! That if he were to come to earth, look around, and say, pick turning into a bus instead of a tape deck, that SUDDENLY all of his communication recording, playing, and whatnot equipment would just cease to work!

That's like looking at G1 Megatron and saying his fusion cannon stops working if he doesn't turn into a gun.

I'm sorry that I fail to believe that the timeless recording power of magnetic tapes or 1.2 gig CDs are somehow superior to the INNER WORKINGS OF GIANT SPACE ROBOTS THAT TURN INTO CARS AND PLANES.

Well, I did start this thread specifically so Tramp and I wouldn't derail the "Sequel" thread too badly, but I'm happy to have you guys at my back.

Now shut up and get outta the way! I'm arguin' with a fanboy! :tfevil

If Megatron didn't turn into something with a large gun attached, such as being an actual gun or turning into a tank, he wouldn't have his fusion cannon in his alt mode. IF he turned into a car, or a jet, he wouldn't have his main gun. Only by turning into an alt mode designed specifically with firepower in mind (a gun or a tank), he would lose his main weapon when he transformes. The same is true of Soundwave. Without having an alt mode devoted to communications, he wouldn't have the added functionality in his specialty as communications officer. He would be no better than the next Decepticon. His alt mode greatly enhanced his communications capability while also providing a perfect disguise. When he is in his alt mode, all of Soundwave's internal systems are devoted to Transmitting, receiving (or intercepting), recording, and playing back communications for Megatron and the others to hear. When in robot mode, most of those internal systems are devoted to operating his other functions such as locomotion for example. If he had a mode other than a piece of communications hardware, he would still only be devoting a small portion of his internal systems to his primary function. Therefore, what I am saying is that turning into something directly dedicated to communications greately enhances his ability to do his primary job as well as allows him to blend in anywhere. Turning into a bus would be useless to him as far as serving his primary function. Turning into a truck would also be useless, as would any other vehiclular form because they all require that he devote his internal systems to other things besides communications. And, by mass converting down to the appropriate size, he is taking all the communications power of his full size and fitting it into a tiny package.

Planes have Radios too FYI.

Sure they do, but they are only good to the pilot of that plane. No one else can hear the communications it receives. The same is true of any personal communicator or even for those Rasdio vans. Onlyt those inside the van can hear the communications. Only the bearer of the radio can hear its communications. A stereo system, tape deck, CD player alt mode has loudspeakers that allow everyone withing hearing range to hear. That can't be done with any other alt mode.

Those cars that drive by with their rap music a blaring beg to differ.
