G1 jetfire alternatives? (valks?)

Recommended Posts

i like the miriya one myself. i know the yamato one suits jetfire more, but i like the solid red with white as apposed to the other way around.

I'm gonna go with... you want one of these. Correct size, correct head sculpt, and you don't have to buy the super armor separately. It'd be cheaper than getting the toynami version and then also getting the armor/fast packs for the toynami version.

That one happens to belong to me at the moment =P

Nice catch Dragoon! Personally I'm partial to the Yamatos, especially the 1/48's. I've got 2 so far and I'm saving for the Hikaru VF-1J with GBP armor. There was someone, somwhere, on one of the Macross boards a while back who had repainted a 1/48 Yamato VF-1S into Jetfire, complete with Super armor. Really kick-ass piece. I'll try to find pics...

Is getting an old Valkyrie that much cheaper than getting a Jetfire toy? I'd go for a Jetfire toy - get one loose w/o box but otherwise in good nick if you don't want to shell out the prohibitive prices they charge for boxed Jetfires. The thing about getting a Macross Valkyrie for the purposes of adding it to your "Transformers" collection is that it is NOT (and never will be) a Transformer. If you were actually looking to buy one to collect as an actual Valkyrie itself, fine... but I think that buying a Macross Valkyrie to use as a Transformer is inherently futile. Because ultimately all you would have is a Valkyrie in denial, posing as a TF.

Look and see if you can find an unboxed Jetfire for a decent price. Compare these prices with how much it would cost you to get the equivalent Macross mould. Considering that the Macross toys were never released in Anglophone nations, I would imagine that some of the old 80s Macross toys would be quite expensive. Jetfire on the other hand was released in Anglophone markets. In short, this means that there should be a greater supply of Jetfires than Valkyries in the secondary Anglophone market which ought to control the relative price of Jetfire.

Check price guides too as to how much you ought to be expecting to pay for a Jetfire toy.

he's looking for a newer, cheaper one instead of getting an old yellow jetfire. your a cool cat goki, but man your a purist in every sense of the word :-P

Well... honestly... I've seen decent looking unyellowed G1 Jetfires go on ebay for what you'd spend on a new valk and reprolabels... and that way you don't have to repaint.

So I think Goki has a point.

man every time i see a jetfire thats white it's either broken, incomplete, or goes for a ton

I face the same dilema recently. I wanted essentially a reissue Jetfire. I started down the path of valks. the closest to jetfire is the 1/55th bandai vf-1s with super parts. Is basically the same toy, but the colors are off. I bought one, and it is the same toy, but the colors won't make you happy. The offwhite "white" was the killer for me. I even bought multiple 1/55th models with the intent of doing head swaps, but the "whites" don't match... If you are cool with buying extra stickers and doing lots of painting, you can have a reissue jet fire, but its not as easy as you think it's going to be and you'll be nervous every time you transform him for paint and sticker damage. I sold my vf-1S off to some dude on macrossworld.com and my other VFs (which I didn't even open the boxes to) are up on ebay now...

After I realized that that isn't what I wanted, I reached a crossroads. Do I want a masterpiece jetfire or G1 jetfire. If you want G1, just save and buy one that is tight. Nothing else will give the nostalgia high. In the end there is no Valk that _IS_ jetfire.

That said, I looked at the 1/48th yamato valks. The transformation is at a quality level equivalent to MP-03 and it next to an MP=03 the robot mode makes starscream look lame (that takes a lot). I mean MPSS looks awesome, but this is just a great toy. There are a lot color choices (and mold choices), but by deciding you want a MP version of jetfire, you free yourself from the being color correct and get a better toy. The 1/48th yamato valks are as good as any transforming toy ever created. They don't require any part removal during the transformation and the attension to detail is terific. Of course they didn't have to recreate a real jet, so they get some latitude in alt mode that MP-03 didn't get which makes the robot mode that much better (beafier and with tons of articulation, plus different types of optional armour).

So in short, I recomend getting a Yamato 1/48th vf-0S valkyrie (pose him on the oposite side of MP-01 that MP-03 is on) and if you want nostalgia, get an original jefire on ebay. But wait a month or so, because I'm doing just that myself, and I'd hate to have to out bid you... :-)
