BW 10th Aniv.

Recommended Posts

Hey, just wanted to see what you all thought about your 10th anniversary Megatron and OP set from TRU. I just saw on seibertron.com the following thread (http://www.seibertron.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=90227&start=0) about production errors in Megatron. Specifically, the waist is very loose, and the legs get somewhat loose after awhile due to a missing piece in the waist and poorly reproduced joints in the legs. I do notice that my Megatron is fairly loose in the hips, has anyone else noticed this? His right arm is fairly loose, too. OP's head is also wobbly like a bobble-head doll. Anybody else notice this? Anybody openned theirs'? It doesn't really matter unless you're very active with your figures.

Yeah, the G1 cartoon in the first few shows had some pretty good transformation scenes--like with Prowl's hips rotating and his arms going under his hood. But then they got lazier after awhile and the robots sort of morphed into their alt modes. And I always wondered why they had to change the faces and sometimes the overall robot itself. ("That ain't Bumblebee's face! That's not Jetfire!") Nice pictures.

I think they changed the faces to give the characters more personality. Remember, a lot G1 autobots didn't have faces (Windcharger, Jetfire, Bumblebee, etc). The only two who really kept their masks were Prime and Soundwave.

As for the 10th set, I've opened mine and I have no complaints about the quality. I don't really "play" with my toys, but I've posed and transformed them a couple of times. I did notice one of the other sets looked kind of messed up, though. Just do a thorough inspection before leaving the store.

If they were going to do another wave, which they won't, I'd love to see Basic Rattrap, Black Arachnia, and Silverbolt make it in somehow. It really bothered me that Universe Silverbolt was purple, and they did a lot of nice BM BA repaints, but never a good one of her original form. Come on Hasbro, it's a repaint! You know you wanna...

Basic Rattrap, they said the mold has been lost and/or destroyed.

Black Arachnia would require a completely new head mold.

Silverbolt is actually show accurate already. The only thing I'd contemplate doing to mine is just painting the eyes white then adding brown dots for some pupils. And also some paint here and there that's needed like the copper/gold on his beast mode front/robot mode feet and the coloring on his feather missiles.

One I would personally like is Terrasaur, but he'd need a completely new mold period. And Scorponok would be nice, as would a whiter Tigatron and a new Air Razor. I used to have Inferno, but have since lost it.

It'd also be nice if there was some way they could reissue Tigerhawk. He came out late in the line, and I NEVER saw one in any store, ever.

I think they're trying to stick with Season 1 characters, and they only reasont they had TM Rattrap was because as I stated earlier, the original basic mold has been lost and/or destroyed.

But I didn't just want the mold, I wanted the character. Universe Razorclaw wasn't in BW. Neither was purple Silverbolt or brown Depthcharge.

But IMO, they did look a lot better.

You can't honestly tell me that when you were watching BW you ever once thought to yourself, "Gee, Silverbolt looks okay, but he'd be really badass if he were purple with yellow lightning bolts!" I simply refuse to believe that.

Thanks for another chance to post my quick and dirty of Universe Silverbolt...

that explains why blackarachnia left him in the universe story

Well Jetfire required a whole new look to avoid copyright infringements with Macross/Robotech. ;p The cartoon even bastardised his name to "Skyfire" just to be sure.

The only two who really kept their masks were Prime and Soundwave.

Well they were two of few Transformers who had faceplates... d: Wheeljack also kept his faceplate.

. I don't really "play" with my toys,

I do. I still do the voices, sound effects and everything. d:

Black Arachnia would require a completely new head mold.

The show head was based on the toy's robot head (which Tarantulas also has, but Tarantulas' show head is based on the toy's mutant head). I think the show was reasonably toy-accurate considering that the animators were trying to make their Blackarachnia form look distinct from Tarantulas (which is why she's less toy-accurate than Tarantulas).

Are you serious? I love the Terrorsaur toy! It's my favourite of the first wave Basics!! I always wished that the show model could've been more toy-accurate - especially in terms of having more black, green and purple accents... the show model was a bit too red. I also didn't see the need to have those shoulder cannons when Terrorsaur already came with his own pistol. Meh.

btw, it's "Terrorsaur."

Terrorsaur = "scary lizard"

Terrasaur = "ground lizard" :P :D

The terrorsaur toy is cool :thumb. But I would like to one that looks show accurate. Terrorsaur had a good look on the show that the toy didn't capture. Of course I would like to see all the major beast wars characters redone to look more like their show models.

I forgot about Wheeljack, but Prime and Soundwave were hardly the only TF toys with faceplates. Bumblebee, Windcharger, and Brawn all had faceplates, and some like Ironhide, Ratchet, and Jetfire, hardly had faces to speak of.

Also, I know Tigerhawk would never make it as a reissue, I was just speaking hypothetically. Those were the figures I'd like to see reissued. There's nothing wrong with the original Silverbolt, I just listed it because I don't already have one.

I think they should redo Tigerhawk has a 6" titanium guy.

Terrorsaur had a good look on the show that the toy didn't capture.

That's because the toy came out first. In reality, it is the show model that is not toy-accurate, not vice versa. It's grossly unreasonable of you to criticise the Beast Wars toys for being non-showlike when they were created before the show and it was really the animators who failed to make toy-accurate models. This is why I personally hate the term "show-accuracy" when it comes to Transformers, since the vast majority of Transformers were created as toys first. Transformers shows essentially exist as a series of 30 minute commercials for the toys - and are thus created after the toys are made. Even Beast Machines was created after the toys, it's just that in North America, for some reason Hasbro released the toys after the show was aired (this was not the case here, we had the toys out on shelves well before the show ever came on TV).

Terrorsaur was on shelves about a year before the first season ever aired.

But as I said before, judging Terrorsaur on its own merits (which is a far more reasonable way of judging it), the toy looks pretty awesome IMO. Terrorsaur and Rattrap were the first Basics I ever bought and simultaneously the second Beast Wars figures I ever got (I got them together in a versus pack). And as I said before, Terrorsaur has always been my favourite amongst the first year Basics (Rattrap would be my second fave). I was disappointed to see that his purples on his helmet, hands and shins got lost in the show model which just made them red... come on, there's enough red on the guy as it is... I like how the purple offsets all that red on the toy. The show fails to do this. The green spots on the chest and back are also heavily subdued on the show model - in fact, a lot of the beast mode kibble just kinda disappears, including the wings which I think makes Terrorsaur look awesome in the toy - kinda like a magestic cape spread out. In the show model, Terrorsaur's big pteradon wings shrink into these itty-bitty tiny winglets on his arms. Buh?! I could understand maybe making the wings retract and spread out - which would be neat because it'd kinda work like Batman's cape in Batman Begins (only moreso as it would grant actual winged flight rather than just a glider). As I recall, Terrorsaur had to use jets in robot mode to fly, whereas Waspinator, whose beast wings didn't shrink, was able to have winged flight. And I always thought that the grey on the rest of his body was too light - I preferred the black on the toy. But then again, the animators also made Scorponok's black grey too.

Just because a toy doesn't look like its show counterpart, doesn't mean it's bad. And as I said, it's most likely because the show is not toy-accurate, not the other way around.

I don't think it's fair to criticize the show for the changes they made to the toys. You've got to remember that a lot of shows start out with a reduced budget because the creators don't want to spend a lot of money on a show that tanks. Sure, you've got a good idea, but what if the public hates it? What if the network hates it? So, until the show gets a following, some faithful fans, a network that likes the ratings, they keep the budget low. Then, when the next season comes around, they boost the budget and things start looking better. Just like they did in Beast Wars. In fact, the only really inaccurate character left on the show after season one was Blackarachnia. All the others were either killed off or changed into Transmetals.

Personally, I loved Terrorsaur's character, but hated his transformation. He looked okin both modes, but the transition from either was awkward at best. Also, I think both Rattrap and Terrorsaur would have looked goofy as hell with gigantic pieces of beast hanging off their backs. Then again, I'm partial to the show. What you see as bad judgement, I see as necessary changes.

Besides that, even though I loved him, Terrorsaur was just a copy of Starscream's original character. I'm guessing that the only reason they didn't have Starscream posess Terrorsaur instead of Waspinator is because it would have been too redundant. I don't see any point in defending him or attacking the creators for the changes they made. To me, they gave him more than he started with and I'm happy with the results.
