Mixing KO's & g1

Recommended Posts

I recently came across a G1 Superion with his head as the only accessory. I had a similar deal with Motormaster. I bought a 5 dollar KO stunticon set and all the pieces where color accurate and fit snuggly. I am thinking about doing the same w/ Superion. Do you guys supplement you collection or missing accessories w/ KO's?

I think it's a good idea for your own personal use, but if you need to go and sell your pieces, it would only be right to either not include those parts or let the seller go.

But yeah, rock it. My only problem with KO's is that I've never met a high-quality KO that I would feel ok with putting together with an original.

:pfx

When I bought the aerialbots in the 80's I found it necessary to get a KO Fireflight. Why? because the wing of the official Aerialbot tore off with normal transformation; there was something wrong with, can't remember what, that put a lot of strain on the wing/body connection. I bought a KO (a pretty good one, btw) and used parts to repair it. Never had a problem since: the original was flawed, the KO was good.

But if you're a hard-core collector then KO's are a big no-no. Also, they can never replace the real thing. When/if I sell my G1 Superion I will (and have to) ask a lower price because he's not completely original.

KO's don't count for collections, but they're okay for personal supplement. And sometimes KO's are fun because they have interesting variations: the KO binaltechs, the larger white G2 Prime, etc...

Some KOs like the Justtoys WST Dinobots, or the KO WST Devastator that are out there are incredible peices.  Which I display proudly with my official stuff.

As for putting KO parts with official to complete figures, I'm not a big fan of that, though I've done it on occasion.  I do like KOs for Kitbashes and custom work though.

Ya I think as long as you don't resell it and not state there are KO peices then its cool.

I'd have no problem "mixing" until I could find the original part.

I currently have KO Fort Max guns on my Brave Max...which seem to me as original issue quality

I'm too much of a purist with ocd to consider using ko's.  The closest I go to that is the reissues which many consider ko's, I just see them as new and shiny.  Whereas originals are worn and loose.  But to each his own.  If you can't tell it's a ko and you're using it to supplement your collection, more power to ya.  I just want the real deal from either takara or hasbro.

I hate to say it but, if you just want a set so you HAVE one on display, then go with a knockoff set.  I'd say that I would start out (if I were starting out) with a knockoff set and then slowly replace the bits with real ones.  The accessories are decent to pass as the real most of the time, and are the hardest things to find when it comes to the sets.

More obscure Japan releases, like say the breast masters, I'd say go knockoff.

I always intended to use the UK rescue force and add some knockoff's of the missing 2 parts to make the gestault, but I never did (that's about the only merge team I don't have still...hmmm...)  Raiden!  That's a great example right there.  I paid over $200 for my set (s) where the rest of ya can grab a decent knockoff for $10?

Customs...nothing beats a bashed custom set.  Don't feel bad when the knockoff's are all cut up at all.  They are cheap and there's plenty of em.  Also interesting to get the larger sets and mess with those...

Knockoff quality.  They usually suck.  Only reason I got the protectabots was because hotspot was RED.  Other than that the rest can go in the trash, with out me having to pay $$$$ for the rare Japan version.

Knockoff's tide ya over, make for good replacement parts, and custom pieces.  Claiming you HAVE a Superion when its just a knock off...yer kidding yer self, go get the real deal!

I say go with whatever you like man. Don't let other people bug you by saying "hey that's a knock off!" If you happy with it and it looks good on a shelf than go for it.

i've got 3 gestalt knock off sets displayed with my collection, so i've got no problem with 'em.  i just try not to tf them much, and i had to superglue my ko superion as it wouldn't have stood up otherwise, which would be my only problem with knockoffs.  cheap, bad quality plastic and bad moulding (meaning that i'm pretty positive that theres almost nothing left on the moulds these guys use).  with the dev KO i had to take the pin that connects long haul's leg's with his torso, otherwise he wouldn't tf.
