If the whole TF mythos could be retold...

Recommended Posts

Would it be worth the trouble?

I'm guessing that the upcoming movie will pull from all of the sources but also redefine the TF story once again. There is no way everything can fit in a logical way so should it all "start over"?

Transformers wasn't really expected to explode like it did. The comic was a 4 issue limited series. I'm sure the cartoon was a season after season effort. Headmasters was such a rushed toy parade. Anyway, what do you think or is this just a stupid question?

well, i think it's pretty evident that the g1 show was meant to be a one off mini series, at least thats how it seemed to me upon watching the first four eps of season 1.  i've no problem with the transformer story being told over and over, not only is it a way to get new toys/characters, but that way you don't have to worry about stepping on fan's toes.

as long as hasbro doesn't attempt to pull another cybertron over our eyes  :tfevil

Please don't make retconing more complicated than it already is.

how many times has it been they reinvented the TF's again?

G1 show

all those wacky Japanese series

the comic

the UK comic

the Japan comics

brazil?

seemed each new series had its new story

and now of course comes the movie...

so why the hell not.

Maybe we'll get the FRIENDLY version some time, where the Decepticons are nice, and just play silly little tricks like Hide the car keys so the Autobots can't start their engines or something...

And Unicron is Primes father...

I'm tired of Hasbro re-inventing TFs.  Cartoonwise, the last 3 have been failures (in my opinion).  There are no characters that hold your attention.  There is no depth.

Since they are now re-inventing the franchise under a G1-like motife, they need to find the characters, define the characters, and most importantly write them well.  That's all I want.  Setting is secondary.

You made a good point. What I loved about G1/BW/BM was that you got to know the characters.

How many G1 episodes featured a mini-car as the main character? "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide", "The Golden Lagoon", That one where Seaspray became a human... Well, they weren't all good but at least you saw some character depth.

A good thing about the movie is that it's not going to be about selling toys. It's about selling seats and DVDs. The merchandising will fall into place but is not the number one motivation factor. The cartoon and comic were both started to sell the toys. The toys are out and selling already. The movie can work independent of the figures... I think?

I'd say the movie and the toys are being made simultaneously to sell each other. Hasbro wouldn't license a movie out unless they stood to seriously benefit from it - i.e.: to sell lots of toys.

Backfire: the US and UK comics were part of the same continuity. The UK comics expanded on the US comics, but they were all in the same universe.

I miss the old BW/BM days when the TV series was a continuation of the old G1/G2 mythos. I could tolerate the Armada-Energon reboot - but having the story reboot again in Galaxy Force (and I'd imagine thinly guised as being in the AE continuity in Cybertron) was just a bit too much for me. I've not really been able to get into GF for that reason... no more continuity reboots please -- well, no more after the movie. The movie I can forgive, as it's a marketing necessity to start again. And I could live with a follow on series based on the movie (kinda like how the new Spiderman cartoon was kinda based on the movies)... but that'd be it... I'd wish HasTak would pick one of the existing continuities and run with it. Constant rebooting just reeks of laziness because writers can't be Powerglideed doing research and making sure their stories don't conflict with pre-existing canon. We need dedicated writers like the ones we had in BW/BM (especially BW).

.. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but the problem is Transformers really isn't aimed at us on the whole. Kids don't really care who prime was back in the 80s, so to them continuity means little to nothing. I think it was mostly the writers of BW that felt we shouldn't be totally left out.. but they were trying to steer BW in such a fashion that it could techincally be enjoyed by everyone.

I personally think G1 should be reinvented.. atleast to clear up some inconsistances and more character develpoment and involvement. Will it ever happen? I really don't think so.

And that pretty well sums up why BW was great. That and the fact that there was a limited number of characters featured in the cartoon instead of umpteen million characters just for the sake of selling toys.

Im worried that the movie will change too much. I hope that starscream sketch we saw a while back wasnt the final look, cause that looks like a beetle rather than the "aerospace commander" that we are used to. Maybe it could be an insecticon instead.
