Usually I buy what is cheap or what I really want. Recently bought Overlord and Powermaster Prime.

Those aside I focus on the new lines with the occasional eBaying. I have close to 800 Tranformers right now. (Need to update my list.)

But I do not have to have everything. Really expensive figures or crappy repaints I do not buy. I would like to own all of the G1 Transformers one day but I would need to find a really good job to be able to afford that.  :tftongue

Buying cheap is what I have done for years. What ends up happening is you get WAY behind on stuff. So I changed up and started back from the beginning again. I guess with so much product out there that it is impossible to truly keep up, especially with most of us starting to collect after 10 years or more of product has been released!

The only characters from G1 I'd like to have are the season 1 & 2 bots. The others I don't really care too much about.

Those are my thoughts exactly (although I did expand a little beyond '85 to '86 and the movie bots).

Most things after '86 and definitely '87 I have have no interest in getting.

I agree.  These are the characters that have the most sentimental value to me.  I also feel the toys have the best engineering (designs originating in the 1970's/early 80's), best vehicle modes, and best cartoons compared to later TFs.

80's toys are the best!!!!!!!

I am just getting started.

My advice to you is to start backwards. I tried to start with 84-86 and it ended up screwing me on the late end stuff. Even as interest rises and falls, 84-86 are going to be easy to find. Sure they are the most sentimental and what not, but if you are just starting, I would try to get just stuff from 88-90 now.

Ideally, you could get 2 toys from these years, then 1 from the early years. This would keep your collection up to speed and still let you get the fun sentimental bots.

well, i just did my personal count, and i have about 250 left to go that I would collect.  Haven't decided on the pretenders yet.  I'm at 38% complete...

start on the japanese series then move to the us alot of the jon stuff is harder to find and cost 3 times as much but its owrth every hundred dollars :D

Fun Facts

Not counting variants, US G1 consists of:

318 Different packaged toys (two tapes one package, etc)

212 Indivdual Autobots

169 Individual Decepticons

476 Different charachters

1076 Different transformations (not including "Scrambling")

1761 different items if you count every bot and every accessory.

i am good so far, i really need target and headmasters

Hot Rod: You do know that technically the cartoon ran from 1985-1990, right? ;)  (1987 if you don't count the Japanese series)

Maximo Prime: Vanquish's other half is indeed Fireshot.
