I hate Snipers

Recommended Posts

It seems Slag and I are in a minority, here. Not that I dislike you others for embracing the way of the snipe, to me, it's just not "right" in my eyes. Then again I'm one of those freaks who believes in having a sense of justice... *Waits for flames* Seriously, I'd rather bid honestly and be there to make the final bid myself, instead of letting an automated program do it for me. That feels like cheating to me. It might be hard to explain it...I'll just leave it at the fact that I have my own system of morals and codes, and IMO sniping goes against those.

I am trying to figure out how bid sniping is dishonest and unfair????  It is a bid with the max I would pay just like the other person bidding.  Because I chose to use a service to bid on an item at the last moment is not cheating.  I did not find a loop hole in the eBay system to cancel other bidders so I could win.  I choose to bid at the last second and if the high bidder did not have the sense to put in the highest Proxy bid that they want to pay then how is this my fault or not honest??  Any thing I buy I know how much I am willing to pay and what I can afford.  This has nothing to do with justice, morals, cheating, etc....

The jist of this is if I want something and have the money to spend your best bet is to not be the person that is the high bidder because you will lose.  Now if I sent you an email after the auction I won bragging how you lost then you would have something to complain about.  BTW I don't do that but have had it happen to me.

If I understand correctly, the sniper programs only bid on an item up to the maximum you tell it to. The maximum you are willing to pay for an item. It doesn't check to see what you are bidding and then bid 50 cents over that, regardless of the current price of the auction.

If so, then how in the world can anyone view it as cheating or lacking morals?  All it seems to be is a time saver for people who would like to participate in auctions but who don't have the time to sit there in front of the computer right then or for hours at a time watching ebay and who know exactly how much they are willing to pay for an item.

It does not seem to change your chances of winning if you are employing basic common sense in your own bidding. Don't get caught up in a bidding war, either way you lose. Don't wait until the last second for an item you really want, you'll only end up getting sniped by either a live bidder or someone using a program. DO put in as your maximum bid the maximum you are willing to pay. Period. That is all you have to do, it doesn't matter if you bid on the first day or in the final moments of an auction. You are either going to win the item at the price you are willing to pay or not. If not then there will be another auction and you can try your luck again without having busted your budget.

Someone using a sniping program, or someone crusing the items about to end, doesn't know what your maximum bid is until they attempt to win the item. If they bid over you, why care? You weren't willing to pay as much as them anyways!

It is all about winning whatever auction you bid on. It doesn't matter how you do it.

I snipe, but I do it manually.  If the Bot is that important to me, then I make sure I'm there when the auction is ending.  That is also my way of making sure I don't go crazy and buy too much.  20 seconds before the auction ends, I put the highest price I'm willing to pay in.  I consider myself to be a pretty moral person and I can tell you that I have no moral issues with sniping.  If the auction is open for 7 days, then I have the full seven days to bid with the highest price I'm willing to pay.  Whether that is 1 day into the auction, or 2 seconds left.  Every other person bidding on that auction has the same chance that I do.  It truly comes down to what someone said earlier.  Who was willing to pay the most.

Just sniped myself a MIB Jetfire for $150.00.  That is at least $50-$75 cheaper then the average going price for the item.  I'm happy.

Sniping does not create injustice. Getting angry over people sniping and attacking them for it is injustice. The program, the idea...LEGAL.

I absolutely believe in justice, I absolutely believe in being fair...I am not some criminal, or going against justice because I snipe.

Geez. Oh noes!!!11!! The INTERNET Drama.

I remember I was bidding on a nfl jersey & the lead guy emailed me "stop bidding on my sh*t , you can't win" :tflaugh & this item still had like 20 hours left

I am agree with sniping. If you don't wanna loose an auction, just bid with the highest price so nobody can't snipe it.

Heh. I had someone do basically the same thing to me (but in nicer terms). It just made me fight for the item even more. I ended up winning it, by the way.

Justice? In terms of what? There's a difference between justice and fairness.

With that being said, I'm surprised by how many people are making a big fuss over sniping. It isn't inherently "right" or "wrong" - it's something that is perfectly legit. I find it silly to place a moral value over something so trivial as sniping. I mean, what if I just happened to see the same auction you are bidding on, but I signed on at 20 seconds before the auction ends and place a bid on it. Is that wrong? How's that different from sniping?

Sniping is done, plain and simple. No wrongs or rights about it.

I one time sniped this guy for the original Crow graphic novel. He emailed me cussing me out. I didn't waste my time by emailing him back. I just laughed.  You snooze you lose. :tfevil
