Is Mirage...

Recommended Posts

Now, I know that Mirage had an American accent in the G1 show, but if they were to re-use him, in say, Animated or wherever, would it make sense to have him as French, be it French-Canadian, or French-Cajun (a-la "Gambit").

Here's why:

- He is/was an aristocrat

- He objects to the war (Iraq anyone)

- He looks down upon other autobots (VERY aristocratic and dare I say it, stereotypically French?)

- He's a spy (I was thinking of those secret French spys that aided the allies against the Germans in Vichy-France in WW2)

- His name is also French and English.

From Wiki:

"The word comes to English via the French mirage, from the Latin mirare, meaning 'to appear, to seem'. This is the same root as for mirror. Like a mirror, a mirage shows images of things which are elsewhere. The principal physical cause of a mirage, however, is refraction rather than reflection."

- His Japanese name, "Ligie/Rigie" is also from the French Ligier Race Team that were his original G1 sponsorson his car mode:

- His sponsors were also "citannes", a french brand of cigarette:

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gitanes (I think the name was changed somewhat on the actual toy though)

So, there are many factors that could point out that Mirage is a bit of a pompous, rude and agrophobic French/European aristocrat, eh, non?

Mirage isn't french, he's just an Autobot

Mirage isn't french, he's just an Autobot

He's talking about how he could be depicted in a new show and thus, the type of voice and accent e would use to depict that personality best, just like in Cybertron Jetfire was given an Australian accent, Scattershot was given a southern accent, Vector Prime a British accent, etc.

Personally, I'd give Mirage that "Blue-blood" New England wealth accent like that of Winchester from Mash, or possibly a "proper Queen's English" accent to really play up his "snobbery.

Yes I know what he's talking about, I just don't like the idea of attaching a race to a Transformer

Scattershot was given a southern accent,

Okay, I'm watching the sub instead of the dub, but... Blue tank? With a sort of visor instead of optics? Called Backpack in Japan?

*Tries to imagine the sweet, adorable character she knows with a southern accent* ... oi vey.

I know; I felt the same way watching G1 subs.

The irony of this is that the Queens accent isn't actually "Queens English" but has a distinctly Estuary English tone to it.

... A level English has ruined my life.

agrophobic

He'd be afraid to go outside? :tfhuh

A bunch of rude stereotypes.

Yeah! And if they ever bring back Blaster, they can give him gigantic lips, and a robotic afro, and make him do nothing except eat energon fried chicken and energon orange soda, while saying how he would pimp things out.

Agrophobic: My bad. I meant something like "fear of people" or such like. It was late when I wrote that.

As for his "race", that isnt what I meant. Just as Animated blitzwing has a German accent, G1 Skylinx a British accent, Outback an Australian one, G1 Ironhide has a "Kentucky" accent, then perhaps Mirage would sound great as some sombre, brooding, husky, chain-smoking gravel-toned arrogant Frenchman?

I was thinking the next possible red repaint of Mirage should be his "British" cousin. We could even call him "Kernel"! Eh, what?
