Food For Thought

One thing I've always wanted to see Hasbro do that they haven't done yet with Transformers is make some animated direct to DVD movies. Now more than ever.

It would be the best way to add on a little marketing for the Universe/Classics line. Seeing the line is a more collector oriented line, it would also be cool if they made any DVD movie to reflect that with a bit more intensity to them, more like the movie did.

Perhaps even make it the more g1 related storyline that people wanted to see with the movie. I think the Classics we got of the main characters thus far would be a great place to start with a new g1-like movie series.

I wonder if the idea has even been talked about at Hasbro. For that matter, I'm actually surprised I don't see many people bring it in any discussions in general.

I do believe that Hasbro keeps an eye to the fandom and I think this one of those ideas that perhaps the fans could do a little bit to push for.

So who else would love to see this?

Y'know, that would be fun, in a campy kind of way. Basically what you're saying is some TF movies using the Classics toys as animation models, like the Games of Deception comic? Yeah, I could see it. Of course, then they'd have things like Blaster as some sort of futuristic bomber plane, which would have me gritting my teeth in NERD RAGE, but I'm sure it could be done.

OVA for the win! :D

Takara's done it. :)

Scramble City

(despite the awesome promotional art, this OVA sucked arse)

Transformers Zone

(is nice!)

...but afaik Hasbro's never done it.

Having said that, making OVAs for toys is an expensive venture. A cheaper alternative is to make a comic book.

Hasbro did this for Beast Wars (Optimus Primal vs Megatron vs set)...

...and Transformers Armada.

Takara included comics with their Transformers in G2...

An even cheaper alternative would be to include a text story, this is something we saw with "The Story of Binaltech."

...but yeah, we haven't seen anything from Hasbro since Armada.

I think he means stand alone movies not "something that comes with a toy" ..

Those things kind of seemed watered down to me.. the ones that came with all the Armada guys were kinda fun to read.. listening to them repeat themsevles in 3 different languages in the same word bubble..

But no.. seriously, Hasbro SHOULD get on the ball with that.

I've seen a lil bit of Scramble City with the TF TM DVD.. I didn't like it.. didn't feel like I was missing much of anything.. felt even MORE like a toy commercial than G1 already was.. lol but the others I haven't seen.. I imagine I'm not really missing out on all that much.

I definitely think something in line with the direct-to-DVD animated Avengers movies is a good idea. I've always wanted one of the WWII G.I. Joe/TF crossover. Animated DVD movies can be obscure enough that they likely won't put a big dent in profits if "teh suck" occurs.

If Hasbro can make BS movies for GI Joe then they can make them for Transformers.

That's it exactly.

Hasbro has put them out for several other properties that aren't even remotely close to the popularity of Tranformers.

Dr. Strange anyone?

Cost can't possibly be an issue here seeing there's almost NO chance of them not paying for themselves with Transformers being so incredibly hot. I think they'd bank a ton of cash on it in fact.

Not to mention it would surely give the toy line that promotional boost that wouldn't hurt.

It would be a good way to reconnect with fans who felt the movie wasn't for them as well.

Plus, Hasbro wouldn't have to worry so much about what the networks think of it like they do with the animated series. Television series take a lot more work and commitment to keep them going. With animated movies it's basically slapping about 4 or 5 episodes worth into one dvd and then letting the cash roll in while they can take plenty of time in between to plan and make the next one. So I don't think it's nearly as much work as keeping a long running tv series going.

I honestly don't know why they haven't done it yet!

I'm all for TF OVAs( Whatever happened to that one the Don Murphy was hinting at before the Movie was released?), but Hasbro had nothing to do with Dr. Strange. (or any of the other Marvel movies, AFAIK.)

Aoi

Speaking on inexpensive things that Hasbro should do but don't - Tech Spec Cards. It's standard for Takara, but I have no idea why Hasbro doesn't do it. We had those stickers with Armada and spec cards with Energon that had no bios... (-_-)

Transformers Zone is worth checking out. The animation rivals that of Transformers The Movie. :) Storywise it's pretty decent considering that it was originally scripted as a series pilot and the fact that the Japanese G1 toyline was almost exclusively Autobots in 1990.

I have the UK Metrodome Takara Collection DVD box set and the last disc for Victory comes with Zone as a bonus extra. :) Not sure if the Australian Madman version has it too or not.

That's right my bad, I meant if Marvel could do it with those properties then Hasbro should have no trouble doing it with TF's.
