Regarding Grimlock

This topic gives me a headache to read. And it's now up to 4 pages of the same back & forth argument that is going nowhere fast. If someone has something new to add, please do so, but otherwise lets please let this one die at least until Grimlock is confirmed as a character in the upcoming sequel.

Really?

So, just as we're about finished with the introductory peeing contest and the interesting stuff starts, it is now decided that the thread is pretty much dead?

Well, great. Thanks guys.

The funny thing about all this Grimlock discussion is that it goes right back to G1. The original episode established that the Transformers turned into Earth stuff for "disguise" (just like the 2007 movie). And then along come the Dinobots and the whole idea gets chucked out the window. :tflaugh If that's how it was handled in G1... I'm just saying that there was no thought at all given to how robot dinosaurs would integrate into the whole "robots in disguise" idea. So it's kind of a tricky situation to be in, when it comes to including the Dinobots in one of these movie sequels. Because they never did fit the paradigm. And now, 23 years after the fact, we're stuck with these characters (some of whom are fan favorites).

Simple economics. Kids love Transformers + kids love dinosaurs = dinosaur transformers = $$$$ :D

Alt mode be damned.. if Grimlock is in the new movie, I atleast hope they kill that damn "I R SPEK LYK TOW YEROLDZ" stuff..

I dunno I had an idea earlier.. Make Grimlock seem like a musty old librarian sort.. studier of battle tactics and what not.. and you're like thinking "Yeah this book worm can't fight.." and then have him go absolutely crazy in combat. Maybe then we can do the "Hulk Smash" lines..

Of course, that's really up to the writers.. but thats my 2 cents.

Exactly!

I'm actually liking the "dinosaur-ish robot mode" idea for Grimlock. Mostly because it provides an easy way for Sam to start calling him a "dino-bot" without it seeming totally ghey.

And within the world of the movie, it does give him a more aggressive feel b/c the Decepticons have the more animalistic robot modes.

I think it's win-win.

I personally don;t really care for the Dinobots. I could do without them in the movies. Therefore, as for this idea, Grimlock in such a way transforming into a T-Rex, it's all the same to me.

As for my opinion: You asked it, I gave you. How I replied would be exactly how I would react to such an idea when it would be proposed to me by a friend, a fellow Transfan. I'm sorry that you don't appreciate my opinion, but then again, this is an open forum, where everyone can say what they want, within board guidelines.

Dude,

It's not that I don't value your opinion. It's not that at all. Your points are perfectly valid from a writing point of view. It's just the wrong angle for this particular occasion. You just stated that you don't even care for the Dinobots, which says to me that the only real reason you posted in this thread was because you wanted to comment on the writing.

In other words: you missed the point of the thread.

But that's okay. Maybe I should have made things clearer in my initial post.

I like the idea of Grimlock being more ruthless than the Decepticons. It's cool to think that the only thing keeping him on the Autobot side is his own selfish needs and desires. When I say "cool" i mean cool to me of course!

That's how the G1 cartoon handled it - and yes, Ratchet and Wheeljack did screw it up. Even Huffer made fun of them ("Dinobots?! I thought you were supposed to make dinosaurs! Lolz!!"). I understand that the Dinobots came from Diaclone's Kyouryuu Robo figures, which were robotic mecha - but the cartoon really failed to create a plausible excuse for why the Dinobots' beast modes were so crap disguises.

Thankfully the G1 comics gave us a more believable origin.

And now it's time for another one of Goki's story time! *chimes playing in the background* :D

As we all know, the Ark came to Earth with the Decepticons following them - the Decepticons boarded the Ark while Shockwave remained on the Decepticon ship ("the Nemesis") to pilot it.

Nemesis Prime spearheads the Decepticons as they board the Ark

The Ark crashed in Oregon whereas Shockwave lost control of the Nemesis and crashed in the Antarctic tropical jungle known as the Savage Land.

With the last of its power A.U.N.T.I.E. (the Ark's computer) revived five Autobots, rebuilding them in the shape of native dinosaurs from the Savage Land, and dispatched them there to battle Shockwave. It is believable that A.U.N.T.I.E., in its damaged state, was unable to properly rebuild and reformat the Dinobots with proper beast modes.

Most other beast moded Transformers in G1 came from the Decepticons and they really didn't care about being robots in disguise - rather, their beast modes were designed for either stealth (e.g. the Insecticons, who could mass-shift and shrink themselves down to tiny bug sizes, so most people never even noticed that they weren't real insects) and the Predacons (whose animal modes were made for similar reasons to movie Scorponok's robotic scorpion mode - to adapt them as more efficient trackers/hunters on Earthen environments) etc. Then you had Transformers like the Terrocons whose alt modes were really intended to frighten other beings. Fun.

Robotic or organic, a dinosaur mode would present a challenge for writers because it would never work as a robot in disguise.
