What do people think of the Star Wars transformers?

Recommended Posts

This has probably been discussed before, but I was curious what people here thought of the Star Wars transformers. When I first saw them, I thought they were kind of ridiculous -- toys made for the sake of marketing more than anything else. I finally bought one when I found the Millennium Falcon set (with 2 exclusive titanium ships) on clearance at Walmart, and I was surprised how much I liked it. On the one hand, it's a ludicrous idea, but I can't help but admire how they managed to get everything to fit together, and how the robot forms do a pretty good job of resembling their movie counterparts.

I bought a few more tonight that I'm not quite as impressed with. I got Darth Vadar (Advanced Tie Fighter), Obi-wan Kenobi (Jedi starfighter), and Luke Sky Walker (X-wing fighter). Darth Vadar looks rather silly in robot mode and the vehicle mode isn't that great either. Obi-wan actually looks quite good in both modes. Luke looks kind of dumb in robot mode (and is also very rickety and replete with kibble) but the vehicle mode seems decent. All of them seem more fragile and less well designed than most regular transformers I have. But I managed to win 5 more of these on ebay tonight for $6 apiece (loose, but apparently in great shape with instructions) so I'm considering just getting the whole line. The upcoming Death Star looks particularly interesting to me. Anyone else collecting these?

The only one the I thought that are remotely acceptable are the ones w/ the helmet on or have a battle mask.

i dont like them at all they sacrifice too much to keep an accurate alt mode while the robot modes totally go to hell in most cases. also the head sculpts are teh lame

Its quite disturbing! And I have a hard time understanding how it actually sells vs. the regular Transformers. What a waste of time and money that could have been spent on other research and development for the actual Transformers.

the falcon is probably the best mold followed by slave one... they are rickity... but the alt modes are dead on.. i may get the deathstar if/when it goes on clearance.... i don't like how they have so few characters... darth vader in 3 different molds... or 4 different jedi fighters.... what kind of ship will they create for yoda or lando... which chracter will they use for tie fighters and b-wings...it's an ok idea for a product line but i think that its hard to incorporate well established characters with well associated ships... the only ship mace was seen in was a clone transport ship but they made him into a jedi starfighter... i think the deathstar would've been better done as palpatine and save the next darth for a star destoyer..... this brings up the whole issue of scale... :tfmad it just gives me a head ache

I love them! I only have the Falcon, Vader Tie Fighter, and Luke X-Wing. The alt modes are exceleltn, and the mech modes have some cool details- Chewbacca has his bandolier on his back, for example. I love the movie-direct quotes and sounds on Han and Chewie.

I'd get more if I didn't have this awful movie TF addiction. Can't wait for Luke Snowspeeder!

Kids love them.

However, as a parent, I hate them. They immediately break into a million pieces as soon as they're out of the package. The designs obviously favor the vehicle modes, as the robot modes are almost always spindly and awkward, and not that cool looking IMO. The quality is also pretty poor, if you ask me. I also think the idea is dumb, but that's more of a subjective complaint.

The Falcon is probably the best of the bunch. I absolutely LOVE the Chewie-half of the Falcon, and the Han-half is as good as any of the other single figures. It's important to remember that they aren't the actual characters, just character-based mechs. I was seeing this on clearance in a lot of places at the beginning of the year, but I haven't seen many in stores recently.

I also have the Ep. III Obi Wan, Darth Vader's TIE fighter, and my son has Mace Windu's and Anakin's Ep. III starfighters. They are OKAY, but nothing spectacular. Their alt-modes are usually passable and they "bot-modes" are as poseable as most Deluxe-sized figures. They certainly don't satisfy my Transformer appetite the way actual Transformers do.

As to what do other people think of them? Well, considering that you can actually find these on the shelves, they probably aren't all that well-regarded.

Too expensive for what you get. At a deluxe price they'd probably be OK, but $15 is far more than what they're worth. I've got the Emperor, but only because I wanted to customize him. I'll probably get the Death Star, that's about it.

I think the only overpriced one up to now has been the Millenium Falcon, but I got him last Christmas at Walmart for $15, even tho he was going for 35 at the time, musta been a mistake. I do think the new Vader/Death Star is way overpriced at 50, and good luck finding one at that price for very long.
