Look, we both know I know why you want that, but who cares if he gets his G1-Homage-Filled Head and Starscream didn't? Other than you, I mean. They went with NEW and CHANGED on SS. They might not want to do that with Soundwave, cause maybe Bay or the Producers or Spielberg or the Designers prefers Soundwave looking Soundwave-ish. There are a ton of reasons to keep him a Soundwave Homage in his head and/or body design. Then again he might look nothing like Soundwave, might look like Shockwave on crack, who knows?

 

I just think you need to not worry with it, it doesn't matter at this point who they want ot give super-homages/throwbacks too anymore.

BTW I still say (and I will until my dying day, or until TF2 comes out) that Blackout was a great Soundwave. He performed Soundwave's function and even looked a bit like him. I'm content with that.

Secondly - Um, jsut because he gets homages does NOT mean he'll be given the "Prime Treatment". Jazz was very G1-ish, so...um...you know.

It will all boil down to what Hasbro decides more than anything. They're the reason Prime looked so Primey, and that certain design cues were held.

 

If Hasbro thought Starscream wasn't a good enough design to suit the character, then we wouldn't have gotten that design.

A) It is impossible for you to verify that Starscream is more popular than Soundwave. I'm not saying you're wrong, but you're basing your grievance on a pretty large assumption instead of fact.

 

B) Even if you could verify the popularity of the characters, there is no evidence that Starscream's massive change in design was due to his lack of popularity. It was more likely due to a combination of Bay's reaction to Starscream's overall fem character and, most importantly, the logistical challenge of transforming a jet without it towering over the Autobots. Again, you're working yourself up simply because you've made a very large assumption about the design process which you cannot verify.

 

C) Royalties is a monetary term. Money is given to real people. Perhaps the word you're looking for is "homage"?

I think it was pretty much confirmed that Starscream's movie design was based off of the issue of mass displacement with an F-22 as well as aerodynamics. IIRC a lot of Move Starscream's features were designed specifically so he could pull off the areal stunts demanded of him. Even though the character was CG, Bay wanted the design as aerodynamically real as possible.

 

Personally, I warmed up to the design once I saw that preview with him transforming at the Hoover Damn, and the actual movie drove the point home. His actions were very Starscream-ish, and that was what mattered the most (Armada SS, for example, had a great G-1 homage design, but was a very different character).

Also, as a SS fan, I think I have to say Soundwave is more popular, at least as far as the general audience (non-TF fans). In almost every conversation I've had with people who havn't followed Transformers since G1, I've had to remind them who 'Screamer was, but everyone always remembers "that tape guy with the robotic dog/cat."

 

As for who gets G1 homages and who doesn't, I don't think it's based on popularity, I think it's based on what G1 designs Bay and co. feel can realistically be imported into a live action movie.

Obviously they saw OP and Jazz's G1 designs and thought "we can make that work.

I don't think Starscream's design was the result of his popularity level, high or low. I think it was the result of 1) the issue of mass-displacement concerning the F-22 and 2) Bay wanting SS as aerodynamically correct as possible.

 

What about SW? I think he'll end up receiving a G1 homage like OP and Jazz received. Blackout looked very Soundwave-ish, and he wasn't even technically SW. So I have little doubt SW's movie design will retain a G1 look. This doesn't mean I feel ripped off as a SS fan (how many Ironhide fans really feel ripped off because of his Movie design?), it just means Bay and co. obviously feel SW's G1 design can be used as a basis for a movie design.

I agree, he had a very SW-like role in the movie. So much so that I really wish they would have just left him as Soundwave and replaced Scorponok with either Ravage or Laserbeak. That way they would have faithfully reproduced SW on the big screen, no need to discuss the issue further.

Alas they didn't do that. Despite his SW-ish qualities he wasn't associated with any of SW's traditional minions, and he was actually named as a different character.

So given what actually happened in the movie I want to see Soundwave in TF2 because he's to popular a character not to have.
