"Masterpiece" line not actualy Masterpiece

Recommended Posts

Masterpiece is not equal to perfect.

What is should be is a damn fine, large scale update on a classic TF.

I think they have done a fine job so far.

Masterpiece grimlock would top them off nicely!

The only precedent in the Masterpiece line is that there is no precedent.

I think this is the most true statement made here.

People tend to get carried away with the awesome-ness of MP-01, and extrapolate that all Masterpieces should be virtually perfect in Alt mode and completely show-accurate in 'bot mode, which is a statement you can't make with the above applying to only 1 figure from the line.

It is impossible (and inappropriate) to say that the Masterpiece line follows any kind of "trend", mainly because there isn't any. We can't say that the MP line should contain plenty of die-cast, because only 1 out of the 3 molds do. We can't say that the MP line should be flawless in both modes, because none of the 3 molds do. The only things that are common between the different Masterpieces are their complexity, and pricetags.

If you had DVD Prime and MP-01 you would choose DVD Prime to save in a fire.

On the G1ness of MP-05, I meant cartoon acturate. Toon megs was bulkier than MP-05. He was about the same bulk/size as Prime.

I disagree completely. MP-01 all the way. And I'm still not getting this whole "colors are too dark" thing - MP-01 has the same tones of red and blue that were used on the original G1 toy.

Now, fig by fig *an asterik denotes which ones I actually own*:

MP-01: Friggin' awesome.*

MP-02: pfffft. Nowhere near worth my money, and characterwise hardly a Masterpiece.

MP-03: Colors were kind of weird, but a mastery of engineering and design. Shame about the brittle plastic quality.*

MP-04: Friggin' awesomeness with a trailer. Only passed on it because I already have MP-01.

MP-05: Pure sweetness. Somewhat fragile and some floppiness here and there, but this is the PERFECT blend of TOON and TOY.*

MP-06: As much as I love Skywarp, it doesn't really make sense given MP Starscream's color scheme.

Unless they unveil a MP Shockwave or Ironhide, I'm done with the Masterpiece line. I have all I need.

I think it's funny you already declar you are "done" with the line when only one new toy, MP-06, has been announced.

Since the Alt line is declared defunct (although that's now questionable given Rodimus' unveiling) the Masterpiece line is the only line that holds my interest in the TF world. I only have Prime and Megs, but I look forward to what acheivements will be made with future additions. I think there is something to be appreciated with each figure (something I don't find in many other lines). I'm amazed on how much criticism Megatron gets. When you look at him, he is undeniably the image we all recognize, no matter what you think of his legs. I didn't think getting a transformable Megs this good would ever be possible, and it makes laugh to think that I would have settled for that "fake" Mp Megatron Abrahms Tank that surfaced months ago. While it was cool, this is more in line of what I wanted.

A "Masterpiece" line should also have more than three molds since there's 5 figures. MP-01 should've had the trailer the entire time and MP-02 should've been scream which would make MP-03 Megs and MP-04 someone like Grimlock and MP-05 someone else.

The only precedent in the Masterpiece line is that there is no precedent.

One would argue about MP-01's alt modes "perfection". But I like the figure nonetheless.

Well, like I said before - unless they unveil a MP Ironhide or Shockwave, I'm done.

I really cannot think of any other characters I would be willing to drop that kind of money for at this point. Just about everyone else that I would be interested in has been done a la Alternators/BT style, which is close enough for me.

Also, I feel like now that I have the MP versions of both original G1 leaders, and then Classics and the Titanium series on top of that...my need for the MP line has subsided, as well as the need for any more G1 homages in other lines.

I tend to agree with the OP on this issue. I think the Masterpiece line is a bit disappointing. Here's why:

MP-01 ALMOST perfection. Weak ankles and a tendency to not hold poses well due to weight (on mine at least)

MP-02 As a Prime/Magnus/Scourge fan, not bad, but a bit plain and has same problems as 01.

MP-03 Color scheme is AWFUL. Plus, the issues with fragility.

MP-04 Trailer should have been released stand alone, with Roller.

MP-05 The head doesn't match the animation model well enough, IMO. And the legs...

MP-06 Too early to tell, but looks better than Starscream. Might be one of the better MPs.

As you can see, there are issues with each one. Some of them are minor (01, 06) and others are major (03, 05). Compare that to say, Masterpiece Voltron, which is spot on just what it should be. The entire line has been close, but not quite. In my opinion, MP-01 is the only one that makes the Top Ten TFs ever list.

I think your reasons are weaker than his were. Especially on MP-04. How that's a reason not to like him is... retarded.

I mean MP-01 was great, but he was too dark.

MP-05 is fragile but overall very well done.

MP-06 has good colors(so far) but still all that crappy kible in bot mode

Comments?

I personally like MP-01's colors and DVD prime's colors. If I had it My way I think I'd like DVD Prime's color scheme with the chrome grill, stacks, and pneumatics.

Hearing all the horror stories about MP-05 I still am so happy I never picked up his goofy lookin ass.

MP-06??? I think Takara has a Small shot at redemtion with Skywarp.
