Have Toy Safty Advocates gone to far?

Recommended Posts

One persons right should not infringe on the rights of another.

Hasbro and creative companies like it have not infringed on the rights of these so called safty groups.

However they don't have a problem trying to limit the rights of Hasbro or another toy company.

I believe they have right to voice their opinion, protest, organize and such but when it disrupts anothers rights by creating laws to limit some one (toy makers don't commit murder they make toys) unless if the group company and or persons are limiting rights of others, then I find it disturbing.

Kids can't raise themselves! Parents need to take responcibility for their actions and for their kids. It is simple, if you don't want your kid playing with a particular toy then don't buy it for him or her. Or if you find it possibly dangerous or too much resposibility to the kid to play with either teach your kid how to be safe with the toy and actually play with your kid (this is the best option) or take the toy back (weakest option but easiest)!

Don't go out and demand laws for something you are too lazy to do. This is not right. You have the right to raise your kid how ever you so choose. The toy and Video game makers have the right to be creative and make their products as they choose.

I am pationate about this cos I find it disturbing that some one is actually considering a law that could imprison some one for selling a video game parents deam unfit to a kid under 18. This is really happening here!

I know my comparisons are very intense and I appologize if I had offended anybody by may more extream comparisons that I have put the Toy Safty Advocates in. So I will not use the term again!

How ever please understand that while it's great to have groups watching out for our kids, I've been reading alot about where they have gone too far.

It makes me sad to think that parents will not raise their own kids instead of lobbying for laws to do it for them.

You seem to think that these advocate groups succeed. The dont, there are already toy laws in place. These advocate groups are just really really loud and obnnoxious. Maybe sometimes theyre complaining results in something like carding minors more for M rated video games, but they arent constantly changing laws. If they had theyre way, there would be absolutely nothing remotely violent about any toys, or video games, or TV. I dont really see them as that big of a problem, theyre just really loud. Until one of these groups makes a sizable contribution too a politcal campaign, they be just a group of really loud parents.

no you cant kup, no you cant :tfgrin

Blast...ah well. I think there is a need for these groups...but they shouldn't be so gun ho about everything. But to tell you the truth they are not so unlike transfans...as they are just a passionate about what they are doing as transfans are about transforemrs.

But just as sometimes that passion lets transfans say some dumb stuff (insert own expletive), the passion also seems to make these groups go way overboard….would be nice to see some sort of compromise but what is the likelihood of that? :redface

Here's how it works: American kids are pansies and their parents are a bunch of lawsuit-happy morons. You know, the over-protective soccer moms who enroll their kids in about 40 after school activities so they have no free time even when they are 8. I hate people like that.

The short answer is yes. These toy safety groups have gone too far. Things have gotten a bit rediculous.

However, we have to remember that accidents have happened in the past and children died. Parents reacted the way that parents react. Laws were created and watchdog groups vowed to keep an eye on the situation. Have some abused thier influence? Absolutely. But what politician in their right mind would reject any proposal that the public would perceive as protecting children? That would be political suicide. I can practically see the TV ad that their rivals would run.

Skullfire I respect your passion for this topic, but when you talk about rights you have to remember that other people besides you or me or Transfans in general have rights too. And sometimes those rights, parents to protect their children, outwiegh ours.

Someone earlier on this topic said we should let this issue die, and I agree. I would much rather be engaged in discussions on what color tracks should be or if the new universe figures are worth getting.

Thanks

Im not only talking about possible new laws I'm also talking about the threat of law suits.

My aurgument started with the fact that I was very disappointed to see that the Hasbro version of 20th Prime had these stubby smoke stacks. Then it was commented that Hasbro has to deal with these toy safty advocates which are by the way a lot of. Now back in 1984 no kid was injuring themselves on G1 Prime. Why is this an issue now?!

Hasbro is working hard to come out with cool toys but someone else is literaly telling them how to make toys. Energon Divebomb ready to go by Hasbro's standerds but was stopped to make a small change in the weapon by rounding off one of the ends.

Now I don't really care about Divebomb or his weapons.

What I do care about is how much money that cost Hasbro to have to stop shipment of the toy and redo the weapon in question because some groups tell them to.

I don't know if the Divebomb issue was a great loss (most likly not) but I am aware of the fact that Hasbro cannot design and create without considering threat of a lawsuit from these groups.

Now these TSAG's hve not gotten their absolute way with the toy industry but the effect they are having on the gaming industry over rated M games scares me:

Jail Time and $5000 penalty????!!!!!

These so called loud parents obviously made their first major dent!

Consumer protection laws (which would include toy safety laws) exist for a reason: to keep companies from selling products that are unduly dangerous. Without toy safety laws, parents would have no idea as to a toy's safety. How can parents have the resources to test every toy to know which ones are safe?

Keep in mind that big companies like Hasbro are NOT your friends. Many will cut corners and sell you garbage if they can get away with it. We need these laws to keep them in check. It's difficult to imagine what it would be like without consumer protection laws, but I recommend reading "The Jungle" for a realistic historical example.

I agree that toy safety groups sometimes go a bit too far. Short smoke-stacks on Prime is a bit obsessive. But I'd much rather take the bad (slight changes like OP's smokestacks) with the good (safe products).

Safety restrictions should be within reason and parents, not toymarkers, should be held accountable for their childrens’ wellbeing. I want all TF designated dangerous due to drop tests and or loose broken parts to be reconsidered. All TF are potentially dangerous if the parents fail to supervise their kids. Would you leave your kid unsupervised in a park? Probably not b/c all shorts of problems can occur. Kids do not know their limitations and right from wrong, the onus is on the parents to monitor their kids. Parents fail to supervise their kids for a number of reasons, the least of which is b/c they are stupid themselves and too damn lazy. I say, stupid people should not be allowed to procreate b/c they do not know how to teach their children proper values and other important life lessons/skills.

IMO, toy makers have a duty to make toys that do not intentionally harm the intended age group. But in all fairness to Hasbro I never met anyone back in ’84, that tried to shove Prime or any other TF or parts into their mouth, eyes or ears. Toy Safety Advocates Groups need to do something else, instead of fighting companies like Hasbro they should be working with them. However TSAG should not have the final say, the toymakers IMO should. On that note, I encourage the triumphant return of Fortress Maximus! :thumb

after reading all the posts and the posts from these groups websites. I give credit to whom it is deserved...

This is a new day than it was in 1984. Parents have less time to be parents than back in said year. So keeping your eye on a child today, like our parents did back then, is much more difficult. So Kids can get into more mischieve. I mean even we got into some mischieve back then and yes some of us did die due to our own stupidity so naturally Kids aren't to bright to begin with. So it helps parents when safty standards are set not cause they are lazy but because they have less time to invest in child-rearing. So I say kudos to the safty groups.

Now, You also have some parent who just don't want to try. This is simply just laziness. They don't want to have to admit that they are they one who truned Johny into the little brat who needs a butt busting. "Oh it can't be my fault, I mean Ricky Lake told me so while I was watching her show, and Johny was outside Chainsawing the cat. So it must be the Toy company's fault cause they have violent toys." It's funny that it would take a lot less effort to try and teach the child reality and fantasy. So I give Kudos to the Police for locking little johny's sick a** up!

And finally, we have the "Put a bubble around our child" Parents. These are the parents who truely mean well I believe but I think they are the ones who lost their grips on the monkey bars back then and they ain't right now. They are the ones who say you can talk a child into behaving. They also believe that all children will be happy and well adjusted adults if they are never faced with any stress or anything that would make them feels bad. These are the parents who are trying to get scoring removed from little league and peewee football. so that way "No one will feel bad about losing." Well Einstien there is only one flaw to that theory. If their are no losers then their CAN'T be a winner It's impossible. and if their is no winners or losers then it's called a "TIE" So you may never know defeat but you will never know victory. And it'll be a bad bad day when your child gets out in the world and suffers his/her first Lose and doesn't know how to handle it, Feels horrible and then jumps off a bridge. So I say Kudos to all you guys that have common sense cause man will evolve and not just turn into a bunch of whiny little *****!

Now don't get me wrong I don't hate any of these people. Ok maybe Johny's mom but Not the others cause they're trying. And I believe you should have a right to raise your chuildren as you see fit as long as you have that childs best intrest at heart. But I think too much of one side can be dangerous if not destructive. We as T-fans can't have it 100% our way cause some of us would have hasbro build lifesize fully functional G1 starscreams. and then we'd just blow the whole place up. *Yes I know a few online that would like those* And the Toy sfaty people can't have it 100% there ways we we'd all be collection plush unicorns named "Happy".

The point is we can reach a nice medium. I don't mind the short stacks. The fact is Prime is still as Bad*ss as ever. and short or long stacks won't change that. But I do mind the fact that children violence are being blamed on them. Kids are just naturaly violent. we learn it before some of us even saw a TV show. But some people you just can't talk too.

Sorry for the long post. sometimes I just get lost in writing and my instructor is a bit sore at me no doubt. :tfevil

good post man, you make a good point about the need for a comprimise. We will never have it our way, and they will never have it theyre way, so lets just relax and enjoy what we have.

Well this is a short thread for me.

Hasbro may be cutting corners, TSAG's want someone else to parent there kids.

There needs to e a balance some where.

There are some good toy safty laws however.

My two favorites are one that makes sure toys don't have sharp metal blades that rival a kitchen knife and that there is no lead in the paint (Bandi got nailed on this one which is why we never see any of their transforming toys pre-power rangers).

Oh well what will be the next Alternator car?

Sounds like a good topic
