as for the whole health thing... well i'm not too convinced that it's as dangerous as everybody makes it out to be. both from experience and bullBlot.

I think medical science would disagree with you there. ;)

other than being over weight, i'm the healthiest person i know.

That's anecdotal evidence, not real scientific evidence (which is gathered from thousands of hospitals from across the globe - and think about how many patients a single hospital would service). There are no absolute guarantees in life, but there are odds. Smoking isn't guaranteed to shorten your lifespan, but odds are, it will. ;) I could walk across a busy highway blindfolded and I might safely cross to the other side... but odds are, I would get maimed or killed.

Another tactic might be to print out numerous images of smoking related diseases etc. and glue them onto all of her cigarette packages. That's what our government is doing atm -- ALL cigarette packages come with colour photographs of people suffering from smoking related illnesses or diseased organs.

Maybe you could also help her get into a new lifestyle of more healthy living, like maybe eliciting her to take up Tai Chi or aquarobics or lawn bowls etc. She could meet new friends who might use their peer pressure to help convince her to quit.

Definitely keep up your efforts of passively resisting her by not aiding her in buying cigarettes. *nods*

Would it be that hard to convince her to smoke outside though? I have some chairs and a glass jar (makeshift ashtray) on my porch for any smoker friends who visit. One of my smoker friends has some deck chairs and a table with an ashtray in the middle on her verandah where she goes out to smoke in her own home -- again, I just don't know anyone who would ever smoke indoors.

Maybe you could put a comfy cushioned rocking chair on your porch with a small table next to it with an ashtray on it, to give her the option of smoking outdoors in comfort. Set it up and tell her that it's there as an option for her so she can enjoy the fresh air while having a smoke (a contradiction in terms, but hey).

PS: I'd move out. I cannot fathom living with either my folks or my in-laws. Not that I dislike them, I just couldn't live under the same roof.

Really? A bit surprising. :tflaugh

And don't worry BK, if you store them away they should eventually be rid of the smell...it can only linger so long, as my experience from buying smokers toys has been.

By this day and age, any smoker is fully aware of the disadvantages of smoking and can only make a decision on their own wether or not to continue smoking.

*note: by no means is this post intended to derail the thread*

I was sorta joking, just trying to encourage to work through it. Such a campaign would be hard to pull off really. :roll

Sorry, but I have to do disagree that every smoker is fully aware. Most smokers have been marketed to in such a manner that they think things like light cigarettes are safer. Most probably dont know 2nd hand smoke is a class A carcinogen. Warning on the pack or not. That's deception and IMHO is not being fully aware.

Congrats on quitting by the way. Its not easy I am sure.

i'd really prefer to not bully her into quiting to be honest. she's 45 now and has been smoking since she was 9 so quiting isn't something coming easy to her. her doctor did find spots on her lungs and she's having a biopsy on them soon. she was supposed to have it the other day, but she fell in the shower and tore the ligaments in her knee so she couldn't continue her 24 hour diet and laxative regimen. tumors and cysts run in her family though so hopefully it's just another one of them, she's still planning on quiting however regardless of the outcome. the reason i don't want to even try to make her go outside is because she doesn't take to cold very well and has a hard time getting up and down steps thanks to a combination of diabetes, being alergic to dairy (hence no calcium) and crohn's disease (why she can't take suppliments). she'll be good to go in the summer months though, we've got a recliner that i'm putting outside for her to sit in because she likes to sit outside during the summer time. i can tell you one thing though, she's cut back drasticly on her smoking. she's had this carton for about a week which is twice as long as it used to last her. toys aside, smoking rarely bothers me, but what gets me about hers is that she smokes those cheap ass regular cigarettes and they're murder, but she knows it bothers me and the wife which i think is another reason she's trying to quit.

wow that got REALLY off topic, sorry about that

whew thats good to know. from your experience, whats been the longest you've had to put them away? i'll be putting them in a storage tub, opened in a room with plenty of fresh air for at least a day, but i need an outsider's opinion since, as others have stated, i'm probably less atuned to the smell than a non-smoker would be.

i just wanna not be one of those people that misrepresent the condition of my toys if i ever do choose to sell them, right now i've been told by the wife that i've put too much into my transformers to sell them off so she insists that i save a little each month, but at least she's letting me sell the ones that i've had in storage for over a year.

Umm...I'd say at least a month. I can really smell it in toys when I get them, but just leaving them some air and some patience will diminish it greatly. I mean, I imagine if you shove a plastic fist up your nose, you may still get a whiff of smoke smell, but it's normal by all accounts. Just get them out of the house, man! Everyone's stuff tends to take on the qualities of the area around it after awhile, not just smokers...so take it to grandma's and leave it in her potpouri room or something. You just need air and a few weeks.

45?! That's not old at all (I'm surprised she's old enough to be a mother-in-law)! And don't they say that it's never too late to quit? Anyway, I wasn't suggesting that you bully her into quitting (unlike Insane Galvatron's rather... uh... insane suggestion), but merely some tactics that might persuade her to quit, or if not, things to coerce her to smoke outside. I trust you smoke outdoors... cos that would significantly cut down the amount of tobacco floating around inside if you did.

As for the money issue, perhaps quitting yourself would save you some money? How much do you spend a year on smokes? I dunno about the States, but cigarettes are really expensive in Australia. The price of smokes is artificially inflated by the government which slaps a really heavy excise on them. It's done so that:

a) The government can reap more money from ciggies. This is the real reason.

b) To help discourage people from smoking. This is the marketed reason, and to an extent, it does work. Having cigarettes at a premium price means that some people will tend to smoke less or be more elicited to consider quitting.

Thanks to anti-smoking lobbyists, as you can see from that pic of an Australian cigarette packet I smacked on my last post, all our ciggies come with big-arse warning labels with the Quit hotline number attached (all places that sell cigarettes must also have signs with warnings and advertising Quit hotline) and graphic colour photographs of diseased body parts and organs. There are also TV commercials where you see heavily diseased victims (e.g.: people with half their faces and mouthes falling apart) pleading people to quit smoking. One ad shows a hospital bed-ridden man attached to life support with his wife and daughter coming in and his little girl telling him this story about how she scored a winning goal in soccer that day, and how she wished her daddy could've been there to see it. The man just clutches the girl's hand, unable to verbalise a response (so that the only he can praise her is to weakly hold her hand). But I digress... ;o

PS: Getting back on topic, I think the best way to go about it might be to continue helping her to gradually cut back to the point where she may hardly smoke at all and quitting may seem to be a more achievable outcome. I'm sure her smoking isn't helping her medical conditions like diabetes.

i don't smoke you tard :tftongue i started out rubbing snuff, i did that for 6 years then quit to get my tongue pierced, then while in college i started smoking black & mild cigars but quit that because what was then my GF (now my wife) didn't like it much. i've never had a problem with nicotine and had no problem quiting both times. i just layed 'em down and thats all she wrote. i attribute that to my mom n dad smoking when i was younger, but i'm not a scientist, i dunno if you can be immune to the addictivness of nicotine but it's like i said, i never had a problem laying it down.

her body is much older than her age. if not for welfare i'm not sure that she'd be alive today, but yea it's never too late to quit. thats what me and the wife told her. we also told her how much better my mom felt after she quit. at first she had problems dealing with the fresh air but once she got used to it she noticed that she can walk around alot more, climb more stairs, taste better, smell better, ect... yea we have a massive campaign going on in america about stopping smoking, but really our legislation is getting out of hand regaurding it. they talk and talk and ban and ban, but do close to nothing about alchohol. smoking is an addiction, but alchoholism is a disease :roll at least if somebody is sitting next to you and smoking, you can get up and leave, you don't have that option with drunk drivers.

lol, my amp is going to be missing it's sub soon me thinks. it sounds like the vc has a section thats unwound and the cone acts like it's sticking, but you can't hear it in-car so i'm going to just run it until it pops, or until i can get a replacement, which ever comes first. if i do get my replacement, i'll send it off with a bang the way it deserves to be sent away. i'd like to get a replacement sooner rather than later, hence my selling of things.

EDIT

i just realized what you where talking about, i'm talking about a car audio amp :-P

also, what about pet dander? there are alot of people alergic to cat and dog dander, is there any way to assure that my toys have neither? the pets arn't allowed around them, but it's very easy for dander to go air-borne. also, before you say it, no, getting rid of the babies isn't an option :tftongue

I've heard from reliable sources that you can febreeze them to remove the smell as well... care to comment, DN? :tfgrin
