smoke and toys

Recommended Posts

I made a very simple deal with my parents. They can smoke all they want downstairs, but they are not allowed to call me in to repaint the walls every year to cover up the smoke damage.

I recommend you kick in the psychological warfare tactics to get her to quit. You don't need to move out. She's family and you should be willing to work this through because its the right thing to do:

>> Start posting those pictures of smokers charred and rotting lungs all around the house.

>> Print out articles of how many people die a year for her to see.

>> Show her all the class action cases won against Phillip Morris because they know tobacco causes cancer yet they still market the stuff.

>> Inform her that 2nd hand smoke (an established class A carcinogen) is worse than the cigarettes themselves. At least, she could smoke outside to spare herself and rest of you from breathing the 2nd hand smoke.

>> Pretend to start smoking yourself. Get her all worried so she will quit to make an example.

>> Call her doctor and ask him to bitch her out for you.

>> Call her brothers and sisters to ask them to bitch her out for you.

>> Get a can of RAID and spray it in the room while shes there. When she yells at you for it. Tell her "now you know how I feel"

>> Tell her how much longer she will live if she stops.

>> Tell her that you love her and you are concerned.

It might be an uphill battle, but she will thank you if you can get her to come around. :thumb

^ & show her this thread! :P

Another idea I just had is to buy one of those big HEPA filters and put it in the room with her.

Better yet, buy two. One for her and one for your room. :D

Its true, when I used to go stay with my dad he was a heavy smoker and after a while you just dont notice it but boy when I came back home to my non smoking mum did I reek!!!!! I dont smoke myself but being around it just seems to shut of your senses, get your TF's out now!!!!

What's really odd to me is I smoke a pack a day of unfiltered cigarettes... yet my walls are still quite white, and I have yet to see any yellowing of anything. Maybe because the TF's are on a shelf across the room...

Or most likely, the yellowing effect is so slight and gradual that you just haven't noticed it. The walls usually turn more of an off white than yellow...

Back on topic and to the original poster. You should piss in all the drinking water. If she complains, just say that you pay half the rent and are just as entitled to pollute the water she drinks as she is to pollute the air you breathe.

yea... thats what i'm worried about, and i know it happens too because my mom used to smoke, and when she quite, i'd smell it whenever i'd come home from visiting my mother-in-law. i even washed all my clothes, even the clean ones.

i just wasn't aware that it'd be that bad in a "clean" room. i think my best bet is to put things in a tub. theres no option of moving out, as theres no way in the world i could afford it, i had to borrow 600 off my grandpa to move in (yea... it's a long story guys) and while i look/act/seem like a badass, i'm really a softy and she's pretty old and has alot of problems so i couldn't, in good conscience, ask her to leave the house. she's trying to quite though, so we've already told her we won't be buying them for her so she's either gotta have her sister bring them down, or go get them herself which has realy caused a reduction in her consumption. she doesn't drive and theres no way she could walk to the gas station, and if you knew her sister you'd totaly understand why she hates that option :thumb as for the whole health thing... well i'm not too convinced that it's as dangerous as everybody makes it out to be. both from experience and bullBlot. other than being over weight, i'm the healthiest person i know.

once again, i appreciate everybody's comments and suggestions, as you can tell i'm pretty new to collecting over-all, i've been collecting for a long time, just not realy collecting i guess you'd say, like condition and things of that nature never crossed my mind because i realy didn't invest much into it. i used to smoke cigars and marijuana all the time, and smoked it alot so i never realy thought about the toys, but now that i'm aware of the cost, and aware of the possible damage it started to concern me, suffice to say i beleive i'll be building some display cases whenever the cash flow allows and sealing them up good

is it easier for older type plastic to absorb said color and smell as opposed to newer plastic?

As a smoker that just recently quit, I can tell you none of those tactis would help the situation. For a smoker to quit, they have to WANT to quit or it just wont last. And to cram any sort of propoganda down their throats will just push them away more-so than help them want to quit.

By this day and age, any smoker is fully aware of the disadvantages of smoking and can only make a decision on their own wether or not to continue smoking.

*note: by no means is this post intended to derail the thread*

Having had five members of my family die from Smoking related Lung Cancer I'm gonna disagree with you on that one. However back on topic yes its probably easier for older plastic to absorb the smell and stain yellow from the smoke then newer plastic since the older plastics are already starting to breakdown to a point from age. Newer stuff also tends to be made from better formulas that resist that type of stuff better. And note that the yellowing effect is on all colors of plastic, not jsut white, on darker colors though it just causes it to get even darker and eventually can cauase little lighter colored spots to appear where the heavier concentrations of the chemicals are.
