I've always thought the name "Optimus Prime" was sorta ghey. But if you were given the job to give it a NorAm English name, what would it be?

 

The name "Nighttruck", for some odd reason, stuck out when I first saw the toy back in the 80s. It might have something to do with the character "Nightwing" who made his debut around the same time.

Nightruck........ okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

 

I like the name Optimus Prime. I wouldn't change it at all. Chances are if I was working at Hasbro in 1984, though, I would have just kept the Japanese name of Convoy.

Optimus Prime for the win. Though I do like using girai as another non-prime name for him.

Ok, so Nighttruck may not be the coolest name, but I've always wondered if there was a better name for the toy/character. I like Steel Justice a lot, too. This was suggested by a friend of mine when he picked up a 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime after watching the Punisher movie.

I would've stuck with Convoy. I prefer the name Optimus Prime, but I can't imagine I would've thought of it. And, Convoy works in an English context, so why not?

 

I would never in a million years have named him Nighttruck or Steel Justice...

Okay, when I was a wee little kid, this is how I named a lot of my plush toys...

 

I had a Donald Duck plushie - he was called Duckie.

I had a Mickey Mouse plushie - he was called Mousie.

I had a parrot plushie, and I kid you not - he was called Parrottie.

I had a Humpty Dumpty plushie - he was called Eggie.

 

So if I had to come up with a name for Optimus Prime at that age, he would have been called TRUCKIE! :D

 

For some odd reason, despite the number of teddy bears I had, none of them were called "Bearie." I did have one called "Cutie" - he had a fraternal twin brother called Mr. Dute. And they had a daddy bear called "Fat Berri" and his "wife" was a Smurf plushie - yep, you guessed it - called "Smurfie."
