The Big Question

Recommended Posts

If the Yellow circle = "I don't care, I'll buy whatever" Then shouldn't it just be the purple part, with no third circle? Who would fall into the "New Ideas" group and the "Old Ideas (G1)" group WITHOUT falling into the "I'll buy everything" group?

I mean, what's left after "new" and "old"?

I think I'd fit into the purple group. I like G1, but I like old ideas too. But i'm not gonna buy whatever they come out with(such as the commemorative Wheelie or every "Magnus" Op repaint)

I think that's what the purple is for... liking old & new, but not wanting to buy EVERYTHING that comes out OF the old & new.

Tripredacus: He was listing all of his "Optimus Prime" toys and he listed Ginrai amongst them. The Ginrai toy isn't just different from PM Optimus Prime in name and persona, it's also different in colour, materials (i.e.: die cast metal) and the arms/hands are a completely different sculpt. They're neither the same character nor are they even the same toy.

Pics for comparison:

Powermaster Optimus Prime (all modes)

Ginrai in vehicle mode

cabs: Optimus Prime , Ginrai

Super Ginrai

P.S.: The Japanese tend to refer to PM Prime as "Powermaster Convoy," rather than "Super Convoy" - see Transformers Generations p.033

They still look the same save for the die cast metal and some shades of certain colors. It's the same damn thing. I don't see a huge difference at all. The only difference in character is the following:

PM Prime (info taken from a bit from Wikipedia):

Prime's personality had been copied onto a floppy disk by the technician running the game, Ethan Zachary, who employed him in various video game scenarios he developed. Prime's damaged mind led him to believe that he himself was a video game character, and in an attempt to bring him back to life, Goldbug, Joyride, Slapdash and Getaway took the disk to the planet Nebulos, where a new body was constructed for Prime. They built a new body for Optimus Prime, and even upgraded it with the ability to combine with the trailer to form a larger robot. In an effort to keep Transformers off their planet, however, the Nebulans had poisoned their fuel, and the sensation of dying convinced Prime that he was truly alive, and not a game character. To save his life, the Nebulan scientist Hi-Q bonded with him, creating Powermaster Optimus Prime.

Ginrai:

A young man who controls a Transtector that happens to look a lot like Optimus Prime and he becomes the engine harnessing the power of the Masterforce.

(Also taken from Wikipedia)

The second of the Japanese-exclusive Transformers series, 1988's Super God Masterforce did not actually feature Optimus Prime himself, but it did feature one of his bodies. This series sees human truck driver Ginrai merge with and control a Transtector, a lifeless Transformer body, which bears a striking resemblance to Optimus Prime.

Again, the only difference is in the story, not the figure.

The figures are meant to be different characters.

If you have a Ginrai toy, then you have a Ginrai toy. You do not have a Powermaster Optimus Prime toy - and vice versa.

Yes, Ginrai and PM Optimus Prime are cosmetically very similar characters - but as wiki said, Ginrai just happens to look a lot like Optimus Prime... he is not Optimus Prime.

Go-Shooter, Cab and Minerva are likewise not Siren, Hosehead and Nightbeat, despite the fact that these characters are all based on the same toys, just with colour variations. Diver, Lander and Phoenix are also not the same characters as Waverider, Landmine and Cloudburst, despite the fact that their toys are the same (save for the difference in hair colour between Diver and Waverider). Tasmania Kid and Scuba are also different characters from Snarl and Claw Jaw, despite the fact that their toys are completely identical. BW Magnaboss =/= BWII Magnaboss and so forth.
