How many "NEW" Optimus Primes is too many?

those f*ckers are evil for letting that happen, since that's pretty much the best Megatron mold I've ever seen.

at least it's not like a Batman, Superman, Spiderman, He Man, Star Wars, GI Joe, and action heroes type line where you get different accessories/gimmicks & a slightly different color scheme for the same molded action figure...

Quoted for absolute truth. We probably have a half dozen or so of Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. I understand they are favorite characters, but there is only so much you can do with a figure. Do we need a yellow and purple Batman? Please.

Personally, I love Primes of all types, and as long as the molds don't totally blow I will keep collecting them.

And they would agree with you. The guys that designed it were laughing about how evil they were. I agreed. :tftongue

I'm not bothered about the amount of Prime's and Megs, usually they turn out to be good anyway, with a few exceptions over the years.

I would rather see new leaders appear though and I liked Rodimus Prime, he wasn't perfect, but that was the charm of his character. He doubted himself and his abilities as a leader, he didn't think he could ever lead the Autobots as well as Op Prime did, but he tried his best. And Rodimus Prime's character had more to it than Op Prime did most of the time, after all other than in the cartoons, since when did Op Prime ever get written/shown with doubts over his leadership and abilities?

I like Op Prime and Megs, but new leaders would be nice to see or even Rodimus Prime back again against a new Decepticon leader who makes Galvatron seem like Wheelie in comparsion.

That's the thing about Optimus Prime -- the character is so two-dimensional. He's like the embodiment of truth and justice and bla bla bla, but nobody's really like that. He's like Superman or something. But that works for kids, who aren't looking for anything beyond "good guy". I was always more personally drawn to Rodimus Prime because of this -- he was transparently flawed as a leader, and wasn't even necessarily the strongest or fastest or smartest etc. But he was still the leader and he made the best of it (most of the time). I think he's the most interesting character in all of G1.

So what's wrong with a yellow and purple Batman? We got Optimus Primes that are not the "usual" red and blue.

But he was still the leader and he made the best of it (most of the time). I think he's the most interesting character in all of G1.

Perhaps because he was the only one who even had a smidgen of "character development."

What WAS Optimus Primes' character anyway? I mean, I can easiliy identify Megatron, Starscream, and Grimlock's character, but Optimus Prime? Nada. He doesn't stand out. He's like the Bill Clinton or James Garfield of Transformers.

I know you really don't like the character, but come on... he's the heroic soldier, leader, father figure, etc. It's not that hard to figure out.

That's not what I mean, I mean, Megatron's personality is that he is intelligent, shrewd, cunning, and deep down inside, a flawed being that needs the help of his followers to get things done. Starscream is the ambitious schnivelling coward that wants attention. Grimlock is the bumbling idiot that wants to do the right thing and is often not taken seriously. Optimus Prime? I can't tell you. Sure, he's the "heroic soldier/leader/father figure", but that' more of a job description than a "personality". That's the thing, outside of his "job", Optimus Prime isn't much of a character at all.

And I sort of answered my own question. The reason why they have so many versions of Optimus Prime since G1 is that he's pretty blaise as a character. Only Megatron is second to his mediocrity.
