Why all the Hatin' for Optimus?

Recommended Posts

Well, here's how I see it.

I have a few favorite characters depending on the line. Not necessarily all of them including Optimus.

For example, of the few Armada figures that I have, I have to say Jetfire is the best out of all of them.

From Cybertron, in a lot of ways, the Megatron mold is far superior to the Optimus Prime mold.

Energon, the only decent mold of the lot was Inferno/Roadblock.

RiD, personally, while I really do dig the Prime mold and he's again on my favs list for that line, I have to put Prowl in second behind him.

BW...well, I didn't get a chance to own the original Primal mold. But I did pick up the new BWX Primal vs. Megatron TRU exclusive pack on Sunday. There are some things that could have been done better, but he's an otherwise decent mold. I prefer the Lio Convoy mold to Primal.

But again, there are the iconic characters.

And Slaughtermaster, let's put something into perspective.

For argument's sake, let's say for some reason Hasbro decided that instead of Optimus Prime for the leader of the Autobots for the next series, it's Rodimus. They're not going to give him a paint job to dissimilar from what he's had (red with yellow/orange flames) and his head is going to be similarly shaped.

It's a matter of consistancy that Hasbro thrives on. Snake Eyes from GI Joe has on all occasions been a black clad ninja.

Again, consistancy is the thing here. So the fact that we get new molds but the paint color scheme is always the same (blue/red/gray) is just part of the thing that makes him iconic. They only reason they've made Megatron a little more colorful since G1 is....well, to be honest I can't think of a reason why.

But believe me, I have a Prime/Primal shelf. But to go against it I have a Megatron/Galvatron shelf.

BTW, the two best Prime molds are the two THS Hybrid Style figure IMO...small but awsome...aside from MP Prime.

The Megatron mold is pretty decent but it makes for a poor Megatron.

And Energon had a lot of good molds including the best Galvatron since G1 Energon Galvatron. That was not only an awesome figure and the perfect hommage.

Which makes me feel even worse about Cybertron Megatron. Instead of transforming into a heavily armed space cruiser he transforms into a race car (it looks cool but it is poorly armed). Energon Megatron is armed with 2 huge shoulder cannons and either an arm cannon or sword. All Cybertron Megatron has is that ""hair dryer" and a few spikes.

The best Prime mold aside from G1/Masterpiece is Powermaster Prime. A cool upgrade but still classic looking. Not to mention that it is actually G1 Prime.

Star Convoy, R.I.D. Prime, Armada/Energon/Cybertron Optimus Prime are all poor imitations at best. Hasbro should really stop abusing Prime's name to eek out more money out of it.

But Takara is even worse forcing Hasbro to make Prime the Dodge Viper (while she should have been Ironhids) and then they did the worst thing imaginable by releasing him as Kiss Convoy. The person who authorized that should be shot (and then I am being merciful).

The reason people don't like Optimus is the same reason people like Sepheroth from FFVII. They think it makes them dark and emo to not like the good guy and they are different.

Problem is there are so many people like this who want to be seen as different that they become the majority.

If you have ever gone out of your way to say you don't like Optimus you just want attention.

I didn't used to hate Optimus, and I still don't, but after re-hashing the same thing about a million different ways, the character that was Optimus Prime is no longer classic or even heroic. He's basically just a red, blue, and grey shell with a mouthplate and zero personality, not to mention that all the Primes recently haven't even been all that original. (I did like Galaxy Force Prime, but then again, since when did THE Optimus Prime ever need to link up with something to power up? I think that a break from Optimus for a while would be a good thing. Maybe make some shows/toy lines that star different leaders--maybe even re-designs of some other leaders like Rodimus Prime (that would actually turn into a truck, not a car named Rodimus) or Star Saber, or even Dai Atlas (might get shot for that one), but something to give Prime a reprieve. Megatron could use one, too, while I'm at it.

Did you draw those pictures in your sig? I really like the Rodimus one.

I don't hate Optimus Prime. I've just had enough of him. It would be nice to see a new leader for a change.

I mean, if your favourite food was fried chicken, you wouldn't necessarily eat it every day...

Well, to be honest I could never get enough of Prime.

But then I am talking about the original G1 Prime as he appeared in the US G1 Cartoon, the Marvel G1 and G2 comics, the Dreamwave G1 and War Within comics and the IDW comics.

I am getting mighty fed up with those lousy characters trying to steal his name and appereance. I mean Energon Prime was an interesting toy but it was not a very good Prime. Plus he allowed Kicker to boss him around. :wtf

That is the problem, they can never equal G1 Prime but still they try and fail miserably. They should just go for a completely new leader.

Sure it could be a truck with trailer (but then a completely different design like Thunderclash or Rodimus Prime were) but I much rather see a new alt mode such as fast sports car or plane. And NO supermode. I mean an Autobot leader should be able to finish off his opponents without one.

Heck any Autobot/Maximal should be able to.

Sigh, I still dream of the day when Rattrap (of all bots) decided to attack Ravage's transwarp cruisen and totally blew it up using only his wits, "Knievel mode" (maximum scorch), a plasma torch and a LOT of courage. That was so impressive.

All Energon and Cybertron are about is who has the biggest and baddest attack. And if the enemy has a badder attack mode then we will just have to find a new one. Sigh, it is like the friggin' Power Rangers.

Did you draw those pictures in your sig? I really like the Rodimus one.

Yeah I did, actually. Thanks, I appreciate it :thumb
