Why all the Hatin' for Optimus?

There are some good things about Optimus Prime. He's a very interesting character when you take him in as a whole. For instance, you've got Prime, who is at his most basic programming a good and moral character. Then you pile onto that his original dislike for the war, his need to protect innocents, his unwavering morallity, guilt at just about everything he sees as a result of the war, and death a couple hundred times. If you mixed all this together, threw in some cynicism, some sarcasm, you'd have a great Prime for a cartoon, IF they were willing to develop him. Sorry, Hasbro, that means more than a single season.

Those old heroes we're tired of, even Spider-Man, can be brought back simply by writing them in a manner that is appropriate to the people of the time. We no longer want to see the infallible hero defeat the evil bad guy. Personally, I'd like to see two individuals go at it who are both good guys. What would the situation be like if Megatron was actually trying to do the right thing, and Prime was in his way, also doing the right thing? The characters that make you think are the best these days, and I'd honestly like to see that.

I DO however, think the idea of combining several generations of Transformers into one show is an excellent idea. Rodimus Prime, Sentinel Prime, and Optimus Prime, all vying for Autobot leadership is an idea that thrills me, and the thought of Galvatron, Megatron, and Someone Else going at it would be a fantastic idea. Until they found a way to unite, you'd have 6 factions. It'd be one helluva show, if done right.

Course, we all know the guys we can call on to get the job done, right? The writers from Beast Wars, most notably Larry Ditillio(sp?).

I agree with Ace - whole new leader, whole new alt mode... whole new concept.

Perhaps Heroes will be that but since they ordered only a few episodes I think there is not enough time to develop the characters.

But I am optimistic that the new show will be good though. If this show does well perhaps Hasbro will invest in a longer running show. I mean we cannot entrust that to the Japanese. Their show ideas last for just one season and then start anew (with only a few differences).

BW lasted for 3 seasons with the same cast. Now that is the way to go.

I think it would be a nice concept to introduce 3 factions. 2 good and 1 evil. The good good guys are the counterparts of the Autobots. They want to protect the innocent and destroy the evil side. The new faction does want to defeat their foes but they do not care who dies during that battle.

But that would result in major carnage and I doubt Hasbro would approve of a Transformers cartoon where you see a tank rolling around with its treads all red with the blood of earthlings. :tflaugh

I am a big fan of G1 Prime, he was always a favorite. But does that mean I buy everything with his name? Hell no. Like many of you I am tired of the yearly rehash of slapping his name on a lousy toy & then repainting it. I thought the last 4 Primes were terrible and didn't buy any of them. In fact I haven't bought a Prime since G2.

I see all the recent Primes as nothing more then pretenders to the throne, and have no interest in any of them. The last three were particularly awful (yes even the fan-favorite Cybertron Prime). Saved a lot of money that way too. Right now I have 3 Primes: G1, MP, and Laser (and I painted the Laser). I will get the Classic Prime, and will wait & see with Movie Prime. Dont even get me started on Primal. :tflaugh1

I would also like to see 2 entirely new leaders at some point. New designs, new names, new helmet design, new everything. That cherry picker they showed at Botcon had potential.

Optimus Prime as a leader and toy was all right. But, come on, not every leader has to be blue, white and red and named Optimus. RiD and BW are closest in trying to diverge from that. I liked how Primal actually had some character development in the series. And I liked how Primal and Megatron were supposed to be some other character.

If they have to have some form of Optimus, then I agree with the previous post--do what a lot of movie series are doing now and have a series with characters prior to the Optimus and Megatron leaders.

In terms of the toys, I think it is unfortunate that they continue this trend with the leader being blue, white and red, name of OP. Why? It kind of gets boring after awhile, imo. No offense to those who adore Prime, but with all these new lines coming out, Optimus is everywhere.

mind you, the decision to make Primal and BW Megs different characters wasn't Hasbro's but Mainframe's. If you look at the pre-show toy continuity, BW Primal and Megatron were initially intended to be new incarnations of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Thankfully Mainframe portrayed them as entirely new characters which the toy continuity adopted from the Transmetals/Fuzors wave onward.

I'm currently trying to do a flash comic that does a whole seperate continuity.

basically, it'll start with the beginning of the civil war. except megs doesnt beat sentinel prime. as a matter of fact, there is no megs, yet. nor are there decepticons. it's the autobots versus a group called the United Cybertronian Seperatist Movement (UCSM). they have the same goals as the decepticons, but it's not them.

later, I introduce the Decepticons as a special forces unit within the UCSM, led by Megatron. he's more of a Starscream- esque character. his true goal is to overhtrow the oligarchy running the UCSM. they end up on earth, under similar circumstances to G1, but it's already 2006.

and eventually, sentinal prime dies, and this little bumble bee type character becomes Optimus Prime.

I'm still working on after that, but I want Optimus to be a doubter. someone who's completely terified of megatron, and has a panic attack the first time they battle.

hopefully I'll have it done before christmas.

Since Kenner made the first series of toys, I am not even sure how much involvement Hasbro had at the beginning. The names were probably chosen because of the brand regocnition but Prime was changed into Primal.

In any case, I really liked that because Optimus Primal is a completely new leader with a different syle of leadership than Prime had.

I think that is now the way to go, a completely new show just like Beast Wars was. The problem is that after the movie, people who will watch the cartoons after having seen the movie will expect Optimus Prime and Megatron and Hasbro will probably give them what they expect.

They could always make several shows (similar to Star Trek having different shows) but I doubt Hasbro would do that.

Dude... Kenner = Hasbro. Hasbro acquired Kenner around the time that Beast Wars was released. Hasbro has acquired many of its former competitors including Tonka. Hasbro is toy Microsoft. d:
