NEED HELP WITH PARENTS

Recommended Posts

Guys, I need help fast.  My parents don't think that Transformers are a good thing for me to collect at my age (considering I'm turning 21, work part time and still live at their house).

They don't belive that TF Fans can go on to be things outside of computer nerds.  That they don't have normal lives.  They want me to grow up and have a family and a job.  I'm starting this thread to send as an email to both my parents computers, so they can watch and see what kind of people we are outside of Transformers.

So.  If you work in the field of anything, ranging from computers to medicine and stuff, let my folks know.  Also, tell them of stuff like conventions and what not.  They need damning evidence that it's okay to continue with this hobby, and I'm going to do the same thing with my GI Joe buddies on a GI Joe message board.

Please Help.

Thanks in advance to those who are helpful to me.

One word: $$$$

That's not helpful Satanstorm.  I'm talking about besides $$$$.

I'm talking about what people can do with their lives outside of TFs and GI Joes.  Yes $$$$ is involved, but I make my own money, and my dad makes quite a bit being a doctor and all.

So please, if nothing relevant aside from money...well, you know.

my parents only cared to point of "how many more can you buy? you should try saving money." and my response in turn was "i could take up heroin." the conversation usually ended there.

but my advice, get a FULL time job and move out. theres no reason you should be 21 and working part time. unless your in school. then stay in school. i was working full time almost since before i was done highschool. i spend what i earn, pay my bills, and am damn glad i dont live with my parents anymore.

besides, what the hell should they care if you collect tfs?

hmm well im 14 so i really sont have much to say, sure in a couple of years if you used  your TF's for display they could be worth $$. i used to have a small landscaping job with my buddie tony, but it didnt work out *dont ask* so i just cut grass, pays good too., but just like shajaki said, if you still in school, stay, it'll be worth it these days, especially scence gas prices are going ^

My fiancé and I (we're both TFans luckily) are both going into nice professional careers uninhibited by they hobby. She is finishing her masters to become a librarian and I am currently getting a job as a Graphic Artist.

I would recommend trying to point out what your folks my collect and show that there is truly no difference. My mother collects glass figurines and art work, my dad collects antique medical equipment. I bet if you were to compare those to collecting transformers you'd find that our hobby is a lot cheaper.

I'm in the financial services business, I also host karaoke, and play in a band.  My girlfriend is moving in with me, and we will be engaged before the end of the year.  I am anything but a stay-at-home, long-haired beardy computer nerd, living in his basement at 35 years old.

In fact, I didn't even start collecting until i was your age (21)... I collected as a child, gave it up, and got back in 8 years ago.  I think there's nothing wrong with collecting TFs, it's no different than the model trains our fathers and grandfathers collected.

And what shajaki said also holds some weight - whenever i've had the occasional friend poke at me about my hobby, i ask him how much he spends a week on alcohol, and he shuts up.  (i'm thinking of one friend in particular).  He spends more a week in alcohol than i do in one to two months of collecting, and he has nothing to show for it when the beer is finished!

Course, that seems more "normal".

Collecting also gives you goals to reach for, and a community of usually very understanding people to communicate with.  Hell you already have a built-in common interest.

I've met lots of great people here, and they enrich my life off the internet as well.

I'd have to say - I can be a weird dude, but my TF collecting isn't what does that to me.  Not at all.

I think the only thing an embargo on TFs would do is put a rift between you and your parents.  YOu'd resent them for stopping you from enjoying your harmless hobby. Collecting TFs does not impede growing up one iota.

Hope that helps, bro!

Sorry. I should be a bit more thorough on my explanation - tell them that you are using your money on TFs because you choose to do so. Unless they buy you the TFs, it's essentially your property. It's all about whose money you used to buy your TFs.

I don't post much here, but because a fellow Transformer fan is in need:

I'm 31, male, and engaged.

I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UCLA and am doing Post-Doctoral research right now in the Genetics Department at Stanford University.

I guess that would make me a scientist.

Recently, I've been invited to apply for a faculty position at a major university as a Professor for their Department of Biological Sciences.

I hope that helps.

I've been a Transformer fan ever since I got Soundwave and Buzzsaw for Christmas in 1984, and I have never looked back.

Satanstorm I think he's looking more for things he can point to and show his parents that just because he's collecting TFs he's not going to end up a loser or a social outcast.

Me I'm in the military.  I'm currently buying a house, I've got plenty of investments in both normal IRAs, Mutual funds, and in my collection of toys.  I collect toys because I find them cool and they help me stay at least in part a child at heart regardless of the Blot I see in my life.

TF collecting will not destroy your life unless it becomes an obsession that you let destroy your life.  Its like any other hobby, be it the ceramic bells and dolls my Grandmothers collect or the Warhammer figures some of my coworkers collect.  Its something that you can do to relax and take pride in, but its far from the biggest thing in your life, or at least it shouldn't be.

Honestly though, if your 21 and living with you parents with only a part time job you might want to look into things like college if you aren't already, or a full time job.  Do something that will help better you a bit and take your parents attention of your hobby.  My parents think my collecting toys is strange at my age, I'm 25, but the fact that I'm doing well in life makes it jsut an unimportant quirk to them.  They know I'm a geeky kid at heart, and as long as I don't look like I'm throwing the rest of my life away they don't care that I collect toys.

On the other hand they think I'm nuts for buying a house as a single guy at my age.

Not sure if this helps you any man.  But just my opinion on things.
